please do more of this video series, i dont normally watch geogueser content but this series is just perfect. Calm and precise anylsises no youtuby over reactons. I love it
On the Vienna round, there is a glitch in the replay system where a guess won’t always show up if the guess is made in the last second or so of the round. It looks like he was about to plonk when the replay cut off. I’ve seen it happen a number of times watching replays after a duel where a guess is made but doesn’t show up on replay. Still shows in game summary just not replay. Hard to say, definitely not conviction worthy in my mind. Hope this helps!
Really interesting, thanks for the insight! I didn't know about that glitch.. It's another reason that the devs should give us access to a bit more information when we review, like seeing a few other rounds or summaries from rounds..
I love watching these "catch the cheaters in geoguessr" vids! You do such a great job in explaining, showing why you think they are/aren't cheating, and editing in stuff to help make your point. Plus your voice is so calming! Keep it up! 😄
I wish more GeoGuessr content creators understood how to craft a good video as well as you. Concise, entertaining, editing, audio, etc. Keep up the great work!
Nigerian round: They probably remembered that one of the places of the Nigerian red car is in Jalingo, and remembered that it is close to Jimeta. Felt legit to me. The Boa Vista Round, too. These are very Identifiable places, if you seen them once or twice.
These are definitely fun and interesting to watch! One thing I'd say is that while looking at a sign for a long time is indeed suspicious, if it's a sign that's not in the player's native script it's much more normal. I know when I see a Russian sign I'll have to basically read it one letter at a time so it'll take ages (although I might open the map to look for other names containing a specific letter to refresh my memory), and for a low ranked player that might be the *only* way to get information. I'd say this sort of thing is most likely for Cyrillic because it's closest to the Latin script so the barrier of entry is the lowest, but with people these days learning all sorts of scripts to improve at Geoguessr it could conceivably happen with all of them. There's also a risk here of being Western-centric and assuming "everyone can read the Latin alphabet fluently" which *might* be true for the demographic that's likely to play Geoguessr at all but I don't actually know, someone from Thailand might be as slow at reading Spanish as I am at reading Russian. That said, that particular Russian poster didn't look very promising to me, and I only play old-fashioned five round games (no duels) so I might not be very representative.
Yes, very good points! The manner in which they make the guess usually ends up being the most suspicious thing in cases where they are actually Googling rather than reading.. If they are slowly reading the script, they should still have to scan for the actual place on the map, but Googlers usually switch back from their other tab and zoom straight in to the correct place
zi8gzag reviewed the same round and I think someone said in the comments that the person did likely google the phone number/ area codes. (video was on 28. oct.; the round at 10:30)
I sometimes stop for 30 seconds on a sign, not because im googling it, but b/c Im just so utterly confused and space out for a bit, while making absurd guesses, that aren't even logically possible. I don't get accused though, b/c im usually in the united kingdom when the right answer is signapore. I almost never get it right lol
Haha yeah for sure, I do that too sometimes. It's the combination of really long pauses + obscure information on signs + unreasonably close guess that makes it suspicious of cheating
Learning more with your zoomed-in details and clear explanations than with most world-class players, much as I otherwise enjoy their videos. It’s probably a lot of editing work, so please know it’s really appreciated
Thanks for another great video! It will be interesting to find out whether rounds get sent to investigations if the player didn't guess. You have the best teaching that I have seen. You highlight what you are looking at and you give clear explanations. I expect your channel will grow quickly.
For #2 (NZ) there was a sign that included the town name Methven. Methven caught my eye on the map in real time when the player zoomed in, so I think it's definitely just a good guess.
Ah gotcha! I missed that, definitely more evidence that it was legit. One of the things I enjoy about investigations is coming across the occasional nice legit guess
I just watched most of the videos! Before taking a closer look, I just assumed that you were a big channel with lots of subscribers, views, and posts so I was shocked to see how underrated you are! I love the investigation videos - not only do we get your insight on where you think the location is but also the discussion of guilty vs innocent adds a nice layer 😄 Thanks for the good content!
love the geoguessr development team. people asked to know the player skill range, already implemented. Still think that they should show you several rounds for each person but that might be a thing in the future too.
Haha don't let me catch you snacking! Jk jk It's really the length of the pauses combined with the obscurity of the information on signs, the proximity of the guess, and the zoom level that people plonk from that I'm looking for
Yesterday I got spawned in two separate BR distance games at the exact same location in Kuala Lumpur. I guessed just somewhere in the city for not being suspicious of cheating 😂.
1:02 at least once I experienced the replay map being the tiniest one despite the one in the actual game being the upsized map so clicking outside could be a replay bug but it seems hard to tell and the other behaviour is pretty suspicious 18:30 think that is a replay bug and the (last second) guess did not get captured but you could alternatively to check if something is under the marker use something like ublocks element zapper (may have to zap a few times if it the marker has nested elements) or try to select the target marker with inspect element and delete the dom-element
thanks for the tips! I didn't know the map size gets bugged sometimes, which could definitely explain how they were able to move the marker like that.. And that's a great idea about deleting some elements to uncover beneath the marker, didn't occur to me at the time but I'll keep it in mind for the future!
16:00 I mean if you've heard of any of these places it's definitely Windsor, which is by far the most well known as its a fairly major city right on the border with Detroit. I would have been baited by that and scanning in that area. It turns out to actually be about 7 hrs away from there, so to zoom in on that location based on the names of random tiny villages is ridiculous lmao. Populations of those towns Windsor 230,000 Maitland 1,100 Shubenacadie 411 Walton 96 Sure, it was Walton that gave it away right 🙄
Ah of course it was that Windsor! Didn't even occur to me. Definitely another great piece of evidence that cheaters are less likely to fall for the same sort of "bait" that legit players are
Regarding the Vienna round, usually when I'm watching a replay of the person who guessed last (or didn't guess at all) I can see the countdown clock. So I would assume this person did guess and did not of time out. But maybe that's not how it works with these replays for investigation.
New brunswick was easy on that one. Red lettering(which is in 2 states I think) and they are switching from requering to not requering front plates. It's not a big state so the guess makes sense
In team duels reviews can you see if they are typing something into the chat? As a frequent duels player sometimes I pause at weird points to type to my teammate if we aren’t in a call. Just curious if that is something to consider as possible during these awkward long pauses. These are seriously high production value videos. Good work.
Getting near 5000 in Vienna is pretty easy if you know the city and the "Bezirke". This one is in the 1. Bezirk, a region of only 3 square kilometers. But the marker movement is suspicious I agree.
Hey, when you're not playing duels but you're all by yourself is it considered cheating? Because I don't do it to get points im doing it so I can slowly learn about this country by googling info like road signs in different country. If it's cheating ill stop but I'm not sure as it is an the private daily game thing (I dont have the paid version)
They should be giving you country info of the player. Seeing someone guess a random place from miles off is a lot more likely if they are from/near that area.
Yeah that would be great! Always a good chance that people will recognize places from outside their home country, but it would help with gauging the likelihood of a good guess versus cheating
Idea form the video with your girlfriend. I don't know if this would work, but. What if you keep the game with the same rules. You blindfold yourself. After she flips the coin, she explains what she sees. you can guess if she is trying to tell the truth, or purposefully lying. If she is purposefully lying, and you guess that she is lying then you can guess where you are on the map.(no moving or zooming) But for example if you guess that she is lying, but she is actually trying to tell the truth. Then she guesses where she is on the map.(she can move and zoom) But her goal is to guess as far away from the actual location. The game only ends when you get 12'500 or 15'000 points in a 5 round game. You follow these same set of rules every round.
Thanks for the suggestion! I like the idea of making a concrete goal to achieve and having her make some guesses when I'm wrong! We may try this next time!
To me #5 definitely looks like googling. The billboard doesn't have the name of the city or oblast just the street, so I'm fairly certain they googled the phone number
To me it doesn't look like a cheater, if you google the street on that billboard "улица Гостиный ряд" the correct location comes up instantly. Just before zooming in on the billboard player saw unblurred license plate with Nizhny Novgorod oblast area code, it would be easy to google but it's very possible to know it too. The fact that player instantly chose NN city instead of Arzamas does make it look legit.
I am not sure if I‘ve been reported for it but last week I literally had a repeat literally directly the game after. It was in the middle of the forest in Northern Finland and I basically 5ked it in 5 seconds… I‘ve not been banned yet at least!
Haha wow! I've never had a repeat so quickly. Hopefully the devs aren't banning based on one suspicious round, and that's not likely to happen very often!
I'm always looking for the length of time that someone stops on a sign combined with how long they scan the map and how unlikely the guess is So just reading a sign for a long time isn't too suspicious (especially a sign with a lot of text) but how that information is used is the important clue A googler doesn't need to open the map and scan for place names, they just zoom straight in to the right location, but a legit player will need to look around for a bit before they find any small places on the (in-game) map
@@kurterrkurt4212 fair enough! I'm always looking for a combination of long stops on signs with suspiciously close guesses without zooming in to the map and scanning!
Yes technically (any "external" help is considered cheating). Although it raises an interesting question since tools like that could even the playing field for people from countries where the native language is less helpful - i.e. if you only spoke Korean you would be at a disadvantage to someone who spoke English or Spanish which are spoken in a much larger area of the world..
Some people download browser extensions that read the game data and tell them exactly where the location is without having to do any effort. It's usually obvious because they can press a button and automatically guess a few meters away without zooming in
