From watching CAD animated, my main issue with Ethan isn’t that he’s unlikeable. It’s that the audience is clearly intended to be on his side
I’m glad you brought this up! There’s so many shows with horrible characters as main characters (probably the most notorious example is definitely It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are very well made and actually handle the topics really well

The animation sucks because the animators understood exactly how bad the writing was, and they didn't want to waste effort on this shit.
Back in the day, I used to think that bad animations were bad because they came from bad animators… But then I found out that 95% of the time, it comes down to of a lack of time, money, management, or simply that their hearts weren’t in it.
This show was probably a mix of all those things, lol. Nobody becomes an artist because they want to make bad art.
@@rubyy.7374look up Clutch Cargo. It was basically born out of a desire to find what the absolutely cheapest commercially viable animation you could get, and for the time it was developed you can applaud their ingenuity and the storytelling was good enough for people to put up with that.
Problem is someone resorting to what was 10x cheaper than Hanna-Barbera probably didn't had good writers and even Cargo fans had criticisms.
Since budget would literally increase by an order of magnitude, Cargo would never be fully animated
@@rubyy.7374animation is such an intensive and ridiculously hard art to get good at its really hard to find someone at the professional level who isn't amazing in some way.

6:07 Ethan walks in front of his girlfriend here to hide the fact that the different angles of her head don't have any transition frames.
At 8:40 she does turn her head on screen though. Either they made it in post because of that issue in episode 1 or its just that she’s looking at where he is, which changes as he walks infront of her
She does have some massive thunder thighs though.
Not gonna lie, it’s an incredibly smart animation shortcut. Plus if I were working on this, I’d also put in as little effort as possible.

I just find it so hilarious how glaringly better the animation is for the intro of the show than the rest of it. And throughout watching the show the intro gets more and more compressed because I guess they lost the footage and just kept using the previous episode’s render of the intro for each new one lol
I know TV shows and anime tend to have different studios animating the intros from the animators of the series, which is why a crappy show might have an amazing intro or vice versa, but for a project like this, I feel like they made the intro first as proof of what they could do and then got lazier when they realized what they actually had to work with.
Probably because there wasn't much to adapt into the intro besides thin guidelines
The declining quality of the intro is representing the declining will to live of the show's animators.
Takes much less money to animate a 30-second to a minute long intro compared to a 10 to 20 minute episode, but these episodes aren't even that long so there's really no excuse.

I hate how the only time Ethan isn’t a dick is when the story literally makes it impossible
if you are going to have a main Character in a series, at least make him likeable instead you have the character of Ethan who's only trait is that he is stupid and likes video games.
Or if you wanna make them unlikeable, you treat them as such!
My main characters literally murder people for fun and are the same formula copy and pasted and they are more interesting
my series doesn't have a main character so it's not a problem i have to deal with
currently trying to figure out how to advance my plot without having one
world-building also gets pretty tedious when you choose not to have a world
you know
the optional bits of story-telling
True, they don't even have to be good people just have a charming personality or at least be relatable, look at Seinfeld for example: all the main characters are a holes, specially george so of course the show threats them as such (they do bad stuff for petty reasons, karma gets to them in an hilarious way), yet none of them are unlikeable because they are written in a way that you can get them and even relate to their struggles
Ethan's like if Scott Pilgrim was an outwardly horrible person and never had a character arc
having an asshole be an asshole with customers can be funny, Randall from Clerks is a good example.
but Ethan has no charm like Randall did, Randall actually somewhat cares about a friend of his, Dante, the main character, who is pessimistic during the whole thing, with Randall even giving him a Reality Check at the end of the film.
if Ethan was somewhat like him, this series if not this whole web-comic would be much better
In clerks the animated series Randall is an even bigger asshole, but he's an entertaining one.
Ethan meanwhile is a black hole of comedy.
That, and Ethan is a jerk to people just for not being experts about what they're buying. I work in retail, there are so many people I've wanted to tell off and treat like crap, but they were always rude to me. He treats people like crap just for not knowing anything about games. What if they were buying it for a child or a friend as a gift and needed to know more to inform their purchase? What if they were formerly a casual gamer interested in trying some of the bigger stuff? He just chased off potential customers because he was gatekeeping.
I was also thinking of Clerks while watching this, Ethan more a fusion of Randall and Dante without any of their redeeming characteristics.

@@spacecadetkaito "Offended" doesn't seem like the right word here, they're more just assuming the worst
Idk if it’s intentional. Nowhere in the episode is there any reference to the fact that the day is 9/11, meaning the joke requires independent knowledge of Lego Star Wars II’s release date. None of the other jokes in the series are that subtle or genuinely funny so I find it hard to believe they got such a banger in on purpose. More likely a very happy accident but who knows
@@KookShanty Eh, in my experience, online webcomics really really like to root their jokes in the most obscure of references without providing any necessary context. Some combination of them not thinking about the longevity of their work in comparison to more professional cartoonists, and their pride as they turn everything into an in-joke. It would make even more sense for Tim to make a joke like that and not add the context if this episode was written or meant to be released around the same time as Lego Star Wars II, which wouldn't surprise me since he seems to be talking about the much more popular Sonic 06 in that episode, released within a month of Lego Star Wars.
It's not particularily clever of a joke either, as someone with a dad born on september 11th, it doesn't seem that far outside of Tim experitise. Basically the same joke as "Today is 4/20, which is funny because of the drug, and absolutely nothing else."

i mean there was a *whole team* of people behind this, so it doesn't really matter if it looks better than your creations
I know how painful this show is to watch, i even felt secondhand pain from you watching it ☠️ (i dont know if second-hand pain is even a thing)
I still remember in the early 2000's a friend of mine was saving up to pay to watch this. SAVING UP. I hope she never did. I'm ashamed to say that I too did used to read the comic, but I was 13 so leave me alone I guess LMAO
to be fair, simple ideas can sometimes really work super well, but the characters do have to be funny or enjoyable to watch. Ethan doesn't seem like the type honestly. also the jokes GOTTA land.
