I love the live action one piece because not only was it not an absolute disaster, but it also helped people who dont watch anime watch one piece and get into the anime. I love hearing about how the live action helped people get their parents to watch one piece.

I watched the LA on release. I’m now caught up reading the manga every week. I stand by it being the best onboarding for a Japanese series TV has ever released. Of course it won’t live up to the anime, and especially the manga. Hachi not being in it really confused both myself and my GF. In the one year since I watched the Live action, I started the anime at the end of September, watched the first 516 episodes until January, took a break, and resumed in July and watched up to episode 931, now in Wano. I have also brought 45 of the first physical volumes and brought so much merch including funko pops, shirts, and even swords from Comic-con. Despite starting to love this franchise through the live action, and still loving it, I can safely say I've enjoyed the anime more, which has caused me to love the franchise as whole. If I had started One Piece through the manga or anime first, I think I would of still enjoyed the Live action, because honestly, it got the attention and work from Oda himself, and I respect it because he's in it for passion, rather than money. Everything about One Piece is immaculate, despite joining almost 25 years late. I didn't join because my friends forced me to, or because I wanted to fit in, I joined the One Piece journey because I genuinely enjoyed it. In fact, before even watching OP, I wasn't open to any anime's at all, because it had seemed 'strange' to me at the time, but despite OP being the first introductory to anime, it has caused me to appreciating anime overall as a whole. Overall, I think the Live action was a great gateway to getting the fans it deserves.

Apparently, a lot of meddling behind the scenes caused a lot of weird choices this season. Like Garp and the marines. Plus the writer strike caused the show runner to not be present during the editing of the last few episodes. I still have hope that they will not rush the story in season 2. I am encouraged that Alabasta is gonna be pushed to season 3 so that we can have better pacing.

  • @sap9255

I personally wouldnt mind having smoker pursue luffy throughout most of the first half of the alabasta saga (for those who dont know, season 2 wont be covering the alabasta arc, and will end at drum island.) Smoker is a logia user and he has the potential to completely outclass luffy, and im sure they could show his power without undercutting the baroque works villains. Example: luffy and co. Meet smoker at LT. Buggy tries to execute luffy but then lightening strikes and luffy is free. Smoker and luffy have a brief fight throughout loguetown but dragon saves luffy, and we dont get to see the full extent of smokers threat. Luffy and co. Get pretty ahead of smoker on the grand line, but smoker eventually catches up lets say in drum island, maybe replacing wapol as the villain of that arc?

I feel like i can see all the flaws and there are things that I don't really like, but i can't get myself to even be mad because the sum of its parts makes so much more than any flaw. Just the depth in buggy's interpretation borrowing what happens later in the manga to make the character feel deeper, the way he talks about shanks feels so layered. That's just one example

  • @yosos2
    @yosos2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

22:13 yeah it does work if you haven't watched one piece that's the point. I get nitpicking but there are things that just wouldn't work in live action. For example in the anime it's kinda hilarious how the straw hats keep swapping places and missing each other going to and from arlong park, but that structure wouldn't work in live action and it would be jarring, they have to convey the same journey in a different way i think that's what you're missing

    • @yosos2
      @yosos2 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

You said yourselves that luffy didn't believe buggy 's taunts because it wasn't the point for him to doubt shanks, it's to show both of the characters by having luffy stand by shanks no matter what and showing us buggy's weirdly huge resentment he has for shanks. It's trying to do the same character work from the manga but in another format

  • @inuku2629

It's all a mixed bag, as far as american adaptations go, it's good, it's the best he've seen so far, and I understand critiqing it, it's fully reasonable and fair to enjoy the serie yet still dunking on the parts that didn't do as good of a job.
This video is a good critique, it's not just hating for the sake of hating, you clearly well though about this.
The thing I mostly hated about Syrup Village was the line "Why no one believes me??" when it should be "No one believes me", not a question but full realisation, Usopp knows why no one would believe him, it shouldn't be a suprise to him, he's known as a liar, he told the same lie every morning for the past few years, and in the manga it was greatly reframed as a messege "it's another peaceful day" by the end of the arc when it came to fighting. I understand your points in flaws like Kuro not killing Buchi and Sham and just saying that he kills his crewmates, I understand why you feel Usopp was handled poorly and I agree but This line is the biggest sin imo
Anyway, the moment I decided I need to write this comment is when you told that "Baratie was the best", because imo it was the weakest. Yes, Kreig is a pretty weak villain in the original and I understand why they cut him out, they made a choice, but Kreig is a pedestal character, he is there to show you how Grand Line is a dangerous place and to bring out the best in both Sanji and Luffy.
When it comes to Luffy it's a fight between military might and pure determination and willpower.
When it comes to Sanji Krieg and Gin are to show who Sanji is now in the story, we get the backstory but now Sanji is fully loyal to Zeff, just like Gin is fully loyal to Krieg, it shows us Sanji's duty as a cook "I don't judge people, when someone's hungry, I feed them. That's a cook's job"
and without them Sanji basically had no arc in Baratie, he didn't say to Zoro to give up on your dreams like in manga, he had no bigger conflict, Sanji just was there, Taz Skylar played him REALLY good, but the script leaves a lot to ask
I like the idea of building up Arlong Park tho so this was a pretty good choice
All being said, Live Action One Piece has good sides and bad sides, it's mixed, we can focus on only one but it's best to see all sides and hope for improvement in the bad sides

I don't think you're raining on the parade. When OPLA first came out, it was like taking a drug. The euphoria of the show not being a disaster amplified the experience, but with that out of the way, I think most people understand that it's a very flawed show. It's also been especially enlightening hearing from the production team about stuff like not being in the room for the final edit of the last two episodes, the original 10 episode deal from Netflix and all the stuff that budget forced them to cut. I don't think it will ever be able to stand on it's own as a premiere piece of media. However I do think it's a great funnel to get people into the manga and anime.

  • @crazymonk27
    @crazymonk27 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

the majority of your issues sadly has to do with the budget and netflix insisting that the show fits into only 8 episodes. The show runner needed Oda's help to prevent the second season from being condensed so much that we would meet smoker in logue town, laboon and vivi at the entrance, whiskey peak, little garden, drum island and ALL OF ALABASTA??? Netflix staff has been pushing them to cut a lot of corners. Sadly the reason why everything needs to be explained the way you criticize it is because of forced focus groups and average people saying things like "why does he have three swords how is he supposed to fight with the other one?" If you guys work in tv or filming anything I am sure you are aware of this.

    • @crazymonk27

I said while I was watching, and I hold firm to it. The LA needed more time.
Either extend each episode by up to 30 minutes (Some would only need 10/15 to fit in the needed scenes, and include a more faithful plot,)
or give it just two more episodes. Could have filled many of the gaps the LA left open.
For what they faced, I thought it was an admirable job. It carried most of the charm of the original and did what it set out to do, in introducing millions more to the series.
I'm glad they're ending season 2 at Drum Island. Alabasta would have been too much, maybe even for 10 episodes. Hopefully they can iron out most of the issues moving forward, even with the restricted runtime. Either way, I want to see more of this cast. If it's on par with S1, I'll be happy. If they poop the bed, Ill be disappointed, but if they decide to start adding anything but more One Piece, I'll dump it faster than a hardware giant dumps a $40 live service flop.

That and removing Garp's plotline entirely. I see so many people tried to defend this action by saying it helps develop Koby and Helmeppo more. But they can easily do that without Garp involvement. Honestly, it's even worse since with Garp's scenes, it entirely took away from exploring the dynamic between the duo further. Like the biggest turning point for Helmeppo is cause Koby saved him from a falling mast. Really? That's the best we can come up with?

great video! i definitely agree on the camera angles, strange cuts and shots, awkward framing, etc. As a film grad & animator I definitely didn't always love those aspects. (youre crazy for not liking the music though.) This is a really well thought out and constructive video! It sucks but I'm pretty sure the Koby and Helmeppo and Garp stuff had to exist for the show's budget not to completely be destroyed. That isn't much of an excuse, but I do appreciate that the writers did their darndest to tie the themes together, even if that Garp fight at the end definitely was not it. I think the Luffy / Coby parallels were well done.
the thing about OPLA is it was my introduction into one piece. I watched it knowing nothing about one piece while being determined NOT to ever watch one piece due to its length and it ended up being my catalyst to watching the show/ reading the manga. I love the show for what it is and can appreciate that it introduced me to enough of the world and characters and themes to convince me it was a good story, even though I absolutely now am fully on the animanga hype train and into the 500s of episodes.
I think it's hard to judge these kinds of things. Of course you want to put a live action version of a story against the original, but for this show, it became the way I was introduced to it at all. It gave me a way to share the story I love with my family (as I just very recently rewatched it, with them this time). It's a genuinely good story in its own right. If you don't know the source material, so you don't know what a lot of these scenes are missing, you really don't feel the lack. I genuinely think the main reason everyone went gaga over this adaptation is because most of the people watching it were brand new One Piece babies.
I've grown to love the animated versions of the characters more. But if I hadn't had this cast to usher me to them, I never would've met them in the first place. That's kind of a conversation ender as far as criticism goes, and I want to emphasize I agree with pretty much all your points here. But I'm also so glad OPLA exists and will watch season two the day it drops, haha.

Honestly, I wish Luffy vs Don Krieg would be in the series. Would love to see Zoro vs Hachi too. I think Usopp looks more powerful in the live action.
I loved that they included Coby and Helmeppo's journey of becoming part of the Marines. Coby and Garp even crossed paths with Luffy so early in the series, which was great in my opinion. If One Piece had a spin-off, I would love Coby to be the main character. It would be neat to see a story from the Marines' point of view in my opinion.
This series is not perfect, but I love it. Anyway, neat review! 👍

A lot of the things they’ve changed or left out sound disappointing but I understand they’re trying to condense the series. Although I agree with a lot of your criticisms, the structure of one piece is changed due to it being a live action tv series, you need an ongoing B plot so I understand why they chose koby and garp even if it had it’s problems

I don’t think adding a b-plot into the structure is a necessity of any property being adapted. I can understand where that impression comes from as all big tv pursues Game of Thrones (in budget and hopeful cultural zeitgeist).I can’t confirm or deny if Garp/Koby/Helmeppo was an imposition from the top at Netflix and/or Tomorrow Studios or an idea from the core creative team. I haven’t seen either reported.
I agree Koby was the one to flesh out if you had to do a running b-plot. it didn’t manifest well, in my opinion.

To be fair, making a live action of a cartoon of course has to cut a lt of corners. No live action can replicate everything from anime, and that's why changes are made. A lot of the criticism of "not enough time" is directly correlated to the acting and writing strikes going on during the production of the live action. Many things were cut, including more reasons for why Usopp deserved to be part of the straw hats. They were planning to get to Lougetown but didn't have enough time. Source: direct interviews with Matt Owens.
The structure was made with marines at the forefront because you need the through line. Hopping from island to island is not tense and not good story telling to keep everything isolated. It's the same reason why the East Blue is considered the weakest of all the "arcs" in one piece. I understand as a fan that we want to see more of the straw hats but that's not how you story board.
Also the amount of time you want to develop characters like axe-hand to be an actual threat who is supposed to be a 1st episode minor villain is cool but how much time can you really dedicate to that? Along with Helmeppo, Coby, and 3 Straw hats, you want more in 1 episode? It's fine to develop Garp and Coby because they become relevant again in the story, not the other characters though. I understand wanting to replicate the depth of everything that the anime showed, but your criticism seems to come from not understanding how a new person would come to watch this show. Your'e not thinking about how to adapt the live action, you just want to see the same thing that you know about Axe-Hand or the dog of Orange Town. (btw they did show how there are different treasures when Luffy chased his hat and Buggy chased his map) Your asking for so much build up and release within one hour compared to the many episodes that the anime developed it. These are minor characters and can mostly be skipped in the interest of time to develop actually important characters.
Yes the anime is better but it also had way more time to flush out the ideas and make the characters shine. Can you actually imagine how heartless Luffy would seem to be if he just walked away when hearing about Nami's back story? After chasing her all that way he decided to just leave and do whatever? We can accept it in the anime because he is happy-go-lucky but in the live action, he actually shows that he cares. Also the "I don't" line is because Luffy has no idea why Nami is so upset at the moment. She was so calm and collected until the next time Luffy saw her. Yes it misses the emotion from the anime but still nods to anime viewers.
Yeah they could have done a lot to change. I didn't like that Luffy claimed to be a "good pirate". I didn't like how zoro claimed himself as first mate when there is no heirachy on the crew other than captain. A lot of the shots were really dark and gloomy for some reason. The close ups and some of the jokes were too much. I don't think it was perfect but I disagree a lot with your video

    tldr: agree and disagree
long ramble: hard agree with many points. actors just standing around looks like a highschool play. if a fisheye lense makes faces look hard to watch unintentionaly then its a bad use of the effect. zoro's backstory was misplaced. usopp as a character was done bad, it feels he didnt earn his spot in the crew. and my hardest agree is on captain morgan, at no point its conveyed he was hated or feared by the base or the town which is why Garp arresting him on ep2 saying "he failed the ppl" doesnt make much sense
all of the past points were also voiced by friends new to one piece i watched the show with so they're criticisms we can all agree with
now for the points i didnt agree, imo many arent considering the fact that the live action was an adaptation for a western audience who is tuning in thinking its a fun goofy pirates show. i could go one by one but each could be its own long ramble so i'll just talk ab luffy hearing nami's backstory
my main argument for this point is that luffy is a very different character in the live action (written for a western audience) hence many actions manga luffy does (like walking away and not caring ab Nami's backstory) dont fit with live action Luffy. The writers of the LA wanted to make it very clear that this character is a good guy that cares ab others from the first ep. he helps Koby immediately, even cares enough to slap his dream out his mouth. Manga Luffy is not, he doesnt care ab Koby's dream or helps him right away, doesnt even care Alvida is robbing an innocent civilian ship. Its only till Koby finds courage and stands up to Alvida that Luffy jumps in, his help and care is earned, not given. Adapting manga Luffy one to one in live action is extremely risky, it makes sense how the LA Luffy was writtern as the explicit good guy
having established that both luffy's are different, now i'll argue why the LA Luffy doesnt (and cant) walk away when Nojiko tells Nami's backstory. Throughout the season this Luffy has been explicitly interested in other's dreams (Koby, Zoro, Sanji), him walking away would go against the character trait established all past 6 eps. Audience would rightfully ask "why Luffy showed interest in everyone else but walks away on Nami?" and the nuance could be misinterpreted bc it contradicts his past actions
another difference between both luffy's is that it takes manga luffy till water7 to show a slight hint of self doubt (he realizes he's not strong enough to fight against Aokiji or CP9) while LA luffy already shows his vulnerable side on ep6 after Nami leaves. In his talk with bedridden Zoro he blames himself for the crew falling apart and for zoro being injured
now u might say "this only shows the LA luffy is a worse version of the original luffy" and yes, i agree but let me ask this: is it possible to have a better written live action luffy whose target demographic is a western audience? Imo its not, we got the best possible Luffy for a western adaptation. Still not better than manga luffy but the best for this medium
finally u might say "since the best possible LA Luffy is still worse than manga Luffy, why does the LA need to exist in the first place?". the obvious answer is money, they want to make money and doing a good LA will give them that. But on a personal lvl, i like this timeline where my friends who never gave One Piece a chance got to dip their toes and eventually got hooked. Getting texts from friends telling me where they're at in their journey is just nice

OPLA really take the risk with their main character, people always say how close they are to the manga counterpart, but you don’t need to be a mega fan to see how different they are
And somehow they didn’t get bombed immediately, maybe unlike others who try to shoehorn their changed character into the original, which makes it out of place, they wrote a story specially for the characters they create, making it work

If this flopped, I don’t know if it would have collapsed live action anime adaptations as a market. I think live action One Piece would have been viewed as a “well, what did you expect? One Piece is a cartoon” by general audiences who are already kinda of hostile to these adaptations. Someone would have taken another crack at a different shonen show, the potential profit is absolutely there. I think it is reasonable to say One Piece would have been one of the more prolific flops in television history given its huge production budget, though.

all weekly anime suffers from pacing issues because they are also adapting a source that comes out weekly its mainly the reason why naruto, bleach, one piece all have hellish filler arcs, in short manga>anime, always, with naruto even being so shit that they just had to cancel it but since its really big they immediately relaunch with shippuuden. these schedule setbacks aren't evident with seasonal anime like KNY, JJK, MHA, though adaptation quality is a different beast.
seriously though, the FACT that one piece live action came out and got a GOOD, yes you read that right, adaptation in this ERA of hollywood gutter shitters littered with girl boss i dont need no man tropes, where source material be damned and regularly butchered to write the stories the author never wrote, this live action sure is more than a welcome surprise, its not perfect yes but i'd be lying if i said it wasn't a fun show. it is and it feels like uniquely, One Piece.

The show has tons of issues. It's far from as good as people paint it out to be, which I am fairly sure they do due to 1. being blinded by the "goda" "can't do no wrong" status of the author, and 2. It wasn't a complete shitfest like Avatar so they overcorrect their feelings towards it.
First the tone of the show is a complete miss, they did the standard Hollywood "let's make it more serious" bullcrap which is the complete opposite of what One Piece is. It's a goofy comedy with loads of slapstick and "looney toons" type humor - none of it is present in the LA. It being a different medium is not an excuse, the "doesn't translate" argument doesn't hold up.
The casting is in a lot of ways really bad. The DEI enforement is too visible making every single character some sort of representation of real world minorities, worst ones in S1 was Nojiko (Nami's sister) and picking a gender neutral girl to play Coby (especially knowing the glow up later in the story).
A few added chunks of "we didn't understand the source material" are the dual plot lines jumping between the Straw Hats and Garp/Coby, One Piece is a journey following Luffy and his adventure. One Piece is not GoT, there's only one faction that is "main cast" and that is the crew. Secondly the sets, sure they might have looked good but they were way too narrow and each island basically only showed one set, which is contrarian to how Oda loves showcasing landscapes, environments and the uniqueness of each island. Not to mention how difficult the waters of this world is to traverse, the live action's very few open water scenes had zero water creatures and zero waves. It was obviously filmed in a pool. And the villagers and townspeople of each island had personalities, a sense of community and felt like a real living thing we just stumbled into the lives of, and in the live action it's as you say they're all props.
And don't get me started with Garp. His characterisation was *EXTREMELY* out of character, his inclusion this early just cements the notion of everything in this world being connected to Luffy as if he's the centre of the world. Which he is not, he is just another guy doing his thing like all others.
Not to mention how they excluded Krieg and the entire reason for Sanji changing his mind to follow Luffy, all his character establishment went out the window, same with Usopp when they removed the slope fight. And dropping Hachi, whom they should be aware of being long term important is just a dead giveaway of the wrong people running the LA, same with Momoo.
How the budget restrains made them cut down Luffy's casual use of his stretchiness by alot was also proof that they should have left it at the drawing board, Luffy is the personification of "I am free to do as I please" and the live action put some HEAVY shackles on him with this choice.
Makenyu seems to be straight up playing post timeskip Zoro when he should be playing the more expressive and happy pre-timeskip Zoro.
Usopp has 0 of his eccentricness, Nami has none of her "friendly violence" side to her, Sanji is just bland since they DEI'd all his "sexist" personality out of him not to mention cut out all of his inner struggle before leaving Baratie.
Yeah this show was a swing and a miss but for some reason people refuse to see it.
