I'm a big fan of Joss Whedon too, but this show was his masterpiece. Everything came together, the writing, the directing, the crew and especially the cast. Fair warning, when you really get into it, you get the dvd's and watch the commentary and realise how very, nuanced and clever this show is. You want everybody to watch it, to love it and to just GET it. And then you start obsessing about it. You start swearing in Chinese and everything good becomes "Shiny!" And you join online forums and quote scenes from the show from memory, even almost 20 years later. And then you join the 76th Battalion and then you get on a plane for 30 hours to go to the other side of the world (twice!) and join up with your fellow Browncoats and then you march in the Atlanta heat in the Dragoncon parade and you make friends and build a family and you never forget that we've done the impossible, "...and that makes us mighty."
The thing that I think the streams and the dvd versions of the show miss, is that when it was initially broadcast back in 2002, there was an intro before each episode's cold open - a title card that said "AD 2517", a few scenes showing everyone and the ship, and one of three opening narrations. The one I remember best was delivered by Captain Reynolds... "Here's how it is. Earth got used up, so we terraformed a whole new galaxy of earths, some rich and flush with the new technologies, some not so much. Central planets, them as formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule. A few idiots tried to fight it, among them myself. I'm Malcolm Reynolds, captain of Serenity. Got a good crew, fighters, a pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher and a bona-fide companion. There's a doctor too, took his genius sister out of some alliance camp so they're keeping a low profile. You got a job, we can do it. Don't much care what it is."
Really great reaction to one of my favorite shows ever. I’m all in! As others have said, the characters comment in Chinese at times to help establish that in this future universe, there is a strong influence of Chinese culture. But those comments serve another purpose as well. Remember that this was a network show, so swearing was not allowed. But it would not be believable if these characters never swore. So Whedon made up plausible slang words like “gorram” and “ruttin’” as replacements. The little asides in Chinese also allow the show to sprinkle in foul language that could make it past the censors. Some of the translations are quite funny, too
As you watch this, realize that this episode was aired only AFTER the series was cancelled. Also, the episodes were aired out of order. As you go thru realize how bad FOX sabotaged this show so Josh would concentrate on Buffy and Angel, their cash cows. What a waste. Also, they speak Chinese because the only two Superpowers left in the verse were China and the USA. Thus, the combination of language and culture.
And now you see what all the hype was about. This show is one of my all-time favorites. The world-building and character development is top-notch. With most shows I've watched, it takes a few episodes for me to really get into the world of the show and get a feel for everyone, but with Firefly I was immersed right away. It is arguably one of Joss Whedon's greatest creations and the fact that it was cancelled prematurely is an absolute travesty. On to episode 2!
Never heard of Joss Whedon or Firefly, but was channel surfing and came across Serenity about 4 or 5 minutes in and was blown away. Used the DVR to record the next time it was on so I could see what I missed. Talked with a friend about it and he told me it was a movie about the series Firefly so I bought the DVD's. My wife was a big fan of Castle after this, so I made her watch the Firefly DVD's. She still calls Nathan "Captain Tightpants."
Did you notice that this takes place in the same universe as the Alien franchise? When Mal takes down the alliance ship in the opening battle the guns HUD display has the Wayland Yutani company logo at the top.
I absolutely loved this. It was such a treat to be able to experience this through new eyes again. I will definitely stay tuned if you continue to watch the rest of the series. Thanks for doing this; it made my day!
OMG, you are awesome. My daughter had me watch her Firefly DVDs and the Serenity movie 3/4 years ago. Like you I had never heard of it, even though I love science Fiction. The first episode, I was completely hooked. By the time I finished watching season 1, I was so bummed that was all. The movie was fantastic but still felt more seasons should of been made. I first saw your part 1 of Serenity and then 2 and 3. Excited to watch episode 2-14. Thank you for doing this.
And YES! - follow through on the season! Looking very much forward to seeing those episode by episode reactions. When you're done, throw in a Q&A to get a little discussion going on things related to the show (and/or movie), that'd be absolute great.
The complexity of these characters is awe inspiring. They each need another to be whole and the cast makes the acting seem so effortless. The visual storytelling, like when the preacher was “confessing “ to the hooker and looking for his own salvation, is very compelling.
This is my first time watching you react to things, and can I just say how much I love the pause button. It drives me nuts when reactors talk through things and then are shocked when they don't understand something later.
The hidden Firefly movie. Watch episodes "The Train Job", "Ariel", and "War Stories" back to back. Joss Whedon needs to professionally edit these episodes together and release as a movie for the 20th anniversary.
Congratulations on taking the leap into this series! I just finished watching Sean react to the last episode of WestWorld and, before I could even recommend Firefly, BAM!!! There you are! Thank you so much, CinemaBlend!
Great reaction! My all-time favorite series. While there are some episodes that aren't as good as others, they are all great. Enjoy! Oh, and they don't really explain it in the series, but the reason they speak Chinese also is because the premise of the series is that the two big Earth superpowers, China and the US, joined and went into space.
I was very impressed by how many relational nuances and details you picked up the first time through, many of which didn't play out until later in the series. Well done sir, its like you're a professional or something ;) Shiny!
Don't know if it's already been said, but on the DVD in the behind the scenes part for Serenity, they say that the Chinese language was so they could cuss without the censors knowing.
Please continue this you wont be disappointed. I love how analysis and try and figure out the world and characters while you watch. I do that in my head all the time when a show has its hooks in me. 💜
Wash's opening scene set the stag for all of it. Every time things start looking good, there is a "sudden but inevitable betrayal." Every time. But still you love them all.
Fox TV thought that airing "Firefly" episodes out of sequence was a "Hipster Cool" move. It made it impossible to develop viewer loyalty if the episodes don't fit together. Is it any surprise that moving it around through the week made it hard to find, which led to low viewer numbers. So these worshippers of the "13-25 demographic" threw it away, since it wasn't "generating the fantastic viewer numbers of a big hit." That's why "Bob's Burgers" is the ONLY Fox TV show I watch. "Take my Love, take my Land/Take me where I cannot stand/I don't care 'cause I'm still free/You can't take the sky from me..."
After the cancellation and the DVD releases people finally got to see the episodes in order and the reaction was insane, what it could have been if Fox hadn't messed with it.
This makes me so happy and pisses me off at the same time. Happy because you get to experience SUCH a cool show for the first time and I get to watch. Pissy because of how dirty they did this show, between the episodes airing in the wrong order, movie the times/days it aired around, and just general disrespect from FOX. SO glad you are doing more episodes! Hopefully you’ll watch the whole season plus Serenity!!
I'm glad I caught the series before it was over. Firefly is hands down, episode for episode one of the most well constructed television show worlds. I'm very excited to watch the rest of the season with you!
PLEASE DO ALL OF SEASON 1 AND THEN THE MOVIE AT THE END. I will watch every video you do on Firefly many times over. When my ex first wanted me to watch, I wasn't interest. Then he was watching a documentary about the fan base and the show, it got my attention and I started watching it. I can absolutely say it is my All Time Favorite Show!
When it aired originally, Fox aired the episodes out of order and spread out. It didn't have a chance. So glad so many people found it anyway to give it its due.
Oh man! Did you have to watch this? Now I have to go pull out my old DVDs and binge watch it yet again. I have binge watched this show so many times. Hands down my favorite show. So heart broken that it was cancelled. And yes, you need to watch more. I've never seen the movie Serenity because I was determined they would somehow bring this show back. Hahaha. My brain says the movie simply does not exist and they all live on. Of course, Ron Glass has passed away so any hope of its return have been completely crushed. And it's possible that the many years since its airing has also put a damper on those hopes. Hahaha.
This came up randomly in my suggested vids because of music reaction videos I've been watching. Had to pop over and check it out. Glad you enjoyed the first episode, I saw you've done more and gonna be popping over to them. While not obsessive I'm a strong Firefly fan... a great show the first time through and one to come back to over and again as times goes by. It's on my list of fave TV series.
10:17 They never explain it in the show or movie but it was discussed outside of those that Chinese and English are the biggest languages so over time they just merged and became the only language.
You said the characters looked familiar: Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan FIllion) was in Castle and currently stars in The Rookie. River Tam (Summer Glau) was the featured terminator in The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Kaylee (Jewel Staite) was a doctor in Stargate: Atlantis, Inara (Morena Baccarin) was the leader of the Ori in Stargate:SG-1 and Deadpool's fiancée, Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres) appeared in the last two Matrix movies, Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin) was in Full Metal Jacket and Independence Day, Hoban "Wash" Washburne (Alan Tudyk) was a robot in I, Robot and Rogue One, Shepard Book (Ron Glass) is best known as Det. Ron Harris in the TV show Barney Miller, and Simon Tam (Sean Maher) well.... he's in Firefly.
Nathan Fillion, Summer Glau and Gina Torres all had roles in Buffy or Angel, so a Wheadon fan probably would know those faces. Nathan was the super-powered priest in Buffy who among other things took Xander's eye and killed some of the Hunter candidates before Buffy bisected him with the red axe. Summer was a ballet dancer of some kind (I don't remember the details) and Gina Torres was a goddes in Angel if I remember correctly.
Summer Glau was the prima ballerina in the season 3 episode of Angel - Waiting in the Wings, Gina Torres was Jasmine in Angel season 4, Adam Baldwin was Marcus Hamilton in the final season of Angel and Fillion was Caleb in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
I am super into you being into it. Note: the Mandarin is usually a way to sneak in swearing past the censors. This is valid because there were two remaining superpowers left on "Earth that was": China and the US. Everyone is bilingual.
"why the hell haven't I seen this sooner" is literally what I've heard everyone ever say when they finally do watch that show. It's well acted, has a brilliant cast (and yes, you recognize each and every one of them because they all did super popular shows after this one too) and the story and universe are a rather unique take on the future.
There are two movies I play at least three times a month. Or more. Dune & Serenity. I may give it my full attention, or have lunch n kind of pay attention, or maybe trying to see how I can stretch my money another two weeks. Firefly episodes I need to watch more often than twice a year. Fun.Fun.Fun.Fun. Good reaction👍👍👍👍
They started with Episode 2 as the "Pilot". and just plunked episode 1 somewhere in the running. So it was disjointed and was on Fox Friday's. But was the one thing I PVRed each time it was on.
Ned Stark: "No one needs to die. Put your weapons down." Mal: *BANG* I'd argue it's the castle rule, if you start pointing a gun around in a threatening manner on Mal's ship, he'll kill you without a second thought.

All righty! I'm back to catch up on the reaction vids. I LOVED this series and I'm SO completely shocked that NO OTHER NETWORK was willing to pick it up! Also - F Fox for not even running the show in order!! Seriously, WTF!?!?! (this is the pilot but fox aired it as the finale...seriously...oy). I'm with Jeff...great stuff and I'm shocked I'd not seen it until this year. Love Joss Wheden, into this kinda thang, weird I'd not seen sooner. Oh...and THANK YOU for pausing when you had to make a point! Not enough reactors do that and end up talking over everything and missing stuff. I started doing reactions last year (I took a sudden hiatus bc of...stuff, lol...but I'm gonna go back to it for The 100 finale which starts next week, boo ya!) and I would do that every so often when I watch GOT bc I wanted to talk but I didn't want to miss a thing too lol...conflicted! On this journey with ya...Onto episode 2!
The Chinese was sometimes to provide censor-safe swearing, but it's also there to indicate a melding of old Earth language and culture. If you dig into some of the interviews with Whedon at the time, it's very interesting.
One of my favorite TV series and they cut it off short. You did this 2 months ago so I guess you had enough positive feedback you continued on. Time for me to binge watch your reactions.
I do love mal's statement, If I come for you, you will be awake, youll be facing me and youll be armed,,,, its a great establishment of his personality
My mother gave me the box set (I didn't have TV), she described it as space cowboys. I thought yeah yeah sure. Was hooked on the first one (still am), binged it 3 times over the weekend, and still watch it now. It's like a comfy place to go when the world is crap.
TH-cam's algorithm was a little slow to recommend this to me but I'm here now. A great, great series. IMO the only thing that even comes close is The Expanse. About the use of Chinese, it lets them get away with a lot more profanity than they would be able to in English. ;)

Don't much care what it is."
leistico I wish that they included the openings in the dvd extras.
Some of the translations are quite funny, too
I loved how you watched this, the things your picked up and observed. Good on ya bro.
This is the greatest show ever made.
Just FYI, subscribed in the hopes that you'll do the rest of the series and the movie.....LOL
One of my favorite shows EVER! Love it so much! Firefly is amazing.
Alan Tudyk's eventual memorable quote: "I am a leaf on the Wind" still gives me chills.
NO SPOILERS! :-)
One of my favorite shows, I was very upset when it was cancelled I have the entire season and movie .
Did you notice that this takes place in the same universe as the Alien franchise? When Mal takes down the alliance ship in the opening battle the guns HUD display has the Wayland Yutani company logo at the top.
My favourite show of all time. Love to see more people get into it.
This is the first show I've watched with Nathan Fillion and I totally get why people crush on him, lol...he's adorable. Great cast!
I absolutely loved this. It was such a treat to be able to experience this through new eyes again. I will definitely stay tuned if you continue to watch the rest of the series. Thanks for doing this; it made my day!
I absolutely love this show! I have watched it and the movie multiple times! “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal “
Here's a teaser from the movie Serenity: "I aim to misbehave." ~Malcolm Reynolds
ARA Shiney!
I think it was the best line of the movie.
So true
This is my first time watching you react to things, and can I just say how much I love the pause button. It drives me nuts when reactors talk through things and then are shocked when they don't understand something later.
the veiled social commentary is the most powerful and most overlooked also in my opinon, may be why it was cancelled because it was so on point!
...late to the Shindig but at least you came! We get this out probably once each year to re-watch.
If you watch the series, you will want to do the movie. We won't have to lobby for it.
And by "want", I think I can accurately speak for you when I say you meant "need" lol
Should you stay with the Firefly Reaction thread at this particular point in spacetime?
Well, HELL yes!
Please more, and thank you. I've loved introducing friends to this phenomenon
Firefly will always be one of my top 3 favorite shows.
Just finding your channel now! Browncoats forever!!! I am so glad your generation gets to watch Firefly in the proper order right from the beginning!
I was very impressed by how many relational nuances and details you picked up the first time through, many of which didn't play out until later in the series. Well done sir, its like you're a professional or something ;)
Shiny!
Why that planet looks just like Walnut Grove, Hazard County, and Korea! I love playing “spot the hills of Southern California”.
lol it's true, westerns got so popular since they could do a short drive from the studio in LA and film them on a shoestring budget in the hills.
Love this show so much I got a tattoo, so please please please watch more of this!
One of the dumber moves in network history., defies common-sense.
If you like the music, check out 'The Man Dressed in Brown'.✌😸
3 generations of my family have watched every episode and the movie so often we can talk along with the dialogue!
The set was built in an old airplane hangar as One to One Scale - everything about Serenity was filmed INSIDE the full sized Serenity. Cool.
So happy to revisit through your eyes.
Looking forward to more.
Dude. Best setup of a review video I have ever seen! New subscriber for ya right here.
Now you understand why so many of us so LOVE this show!
Yeah. The Fox order of episodes made the story jump around and ultimately, made no sense.
It is one of the best shows ever made!
Great show. Gets better as it goes. Sad that it was a short trip. Great cast with great writing. I would love to see your take on each episide.
This is one of my favorites! You need to finish the whole season.
18 years too late, but welcome to the club! And, yes, I'd enjoy watching you watch the rest of the series.
It's never too late to join the Browncoats!
10:17 They never explain it in the show or movie but it was discussed outside of those that Chinese and English are the biggest languages so over time they just merged and became the only language.
You said the characters looked familiar:
Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan FIllion) was in Castle and currently stars in The Rookie.
River Tam (Summer Glau) was the featured terminator in The Sarah Connor Chronicles,
Kaylee (Jewel Staite) was a doctor in Stargate: Atlantis,
Inara (Morena Baccarin) was the leader of the Ori in Stargate:SG-1 and Deadpool's fiancée,
Zoe Washburne (Gina Torres) appeared in the last two Matrix movies,
Jayne Cobb (Adam Baldwin) was in Full Metal Jacket and Independence Day,
Hoban "Wash" Washburne (Alan Tudyk) was a robot in I, Robot and Rogue One,
Shepard Book (Ron Glass) is best known as Det. Ron Harris in the TV show Barney Miller, and
Simon Tam (Sean Maher) well.... he's in Firefly.
And who forget one of FIllion’s first roles in “Two guys, a girl, and a pizza place” with Ryan Reynolds,...?
Summer Glau was the prima ballerina in the season 3 episode of Angel - Waiting in the Wings, Gina Torres was Jasmine in Angel season 4, Adam Baldwin was Marcus Hamilton in the final season of Angel and Fillion was Caleb in the final season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Inara was the wife in Homeland
Jayne was one of the leads in Chuck
Wash voiced characters in Frozen, Wreck it Ralph and Zootopia and was in Dodgeball
I subscribed just so I can watch the rest of your Firefly videos.
Wow! I'm really behind. I see in your videos that you ha e already watched the entire season. Good man!
Love Firefly!
Wow! Fun video. I've seen these episodes so many times, so it's really fun to experience it for the first time through someone. :)
Dammit. Now I have to go get the whole Firefly Series and movie again. Just when I thought I had the addiction kicked.
They started with Episode 2 as the "Pilot". and just plunked episode 1 somewhere in the running. So it was disjointed and was on Fox Friday's. But was the one thing I PVRed each time it was on.
Ned Stark: "No one needs to die. Put your weapons down."
Mal: *BANG*
I'd argue it's the castle rule, if you start pointing a gun around in a threatening manner on Mal's ship, he'll kill you without a second thought.
Glad we share opinion of the writing, acting and directing/cinemat. Like it so much, I really enjoy watching others reactions to the series and movie too. And the chest size for your browncoat is????
It's amazing how many people are reacting to this show lately. Also amazing how much better this dude is than some people with more views.
Definitely do more reactions of Firefly
One of my favorite TV series and they cut it off short. You did this 2 months ago so I guess you had enough positive feedback you continued on. Time for me to binge watch your reactions.
I own, and have watched this series three times, and your video has made me decide to watch it again this weekend. :)
About the use of Chinese, it lets them get away with a lot more profanity than they would be able to in English. ;)
I'm always slightly jealous of people that get to watch the Firefly pilot for the first time, and get to experience that wonder and awe.
You were me a few years ago....welcome to the club Firefly is a show I can literally drop everything and watch an episode and Episode 8 Out of Gas is my favorite 45 mins of tv ever produced
Still one of my favourite shows I rewatch it pretty often it was so good I'm still pissed it got cancelled
