Always thought it was a bit obvious that Mal going from kissing a cross to antagonizing Shepard Book was a clear indication of a man who'd had his faith broken. Losing the war the way that the Independents did broke something in Mal. It's a huge part of what makes him such a fascinating character.
But let's be fair, even Joss Whedon has said, that one of the reasons this series is so beloved is because it didn't stick around long enough to dip in quality, I sometimes wonder how "Firefly" would be perceived if "Serenity" got two sequel films?
Fun fact: The Performer who plays The Lawman is one of Joss Whedon's Hat Trick Performers on "Angel" he was Harry Doyle's Future Husband in the episode "The Bachelor Party," he was Ken in the "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" episode "Anne."
So good to have Lauren back! I hope she was charmed by the crew (she seemed to be all for Alan Tudyk being in the series) and intrigued by the plot/situation so far. Joel seems to know his stuff; I'm looking forward to knowing him a little better. For a moment there I thought it would be a group reaction with the four of you: it was unexpected but I was up for it!
Firstly, whoever took part in coming up with this intro- so cute and clever. And secondly, whoever does the graphics for this channel- namely Buffy and this, you’re quite gifted 😍. And thirdly, I’m glad to have Lauren back! Or at least I haven’t seen them in other reactions I watch.. it would be really cool if they were to join the Buffy reactions again, but I’m sure you guys have reasons. 💕

Yeah, it was something we weren’t ever sure would be possible again, but it’s very exciting for all of us to have Lauren back on the channel since she started with us!

I see a Firefly reaction channel and I subscribe. Part of having PTSD (Mal suffers from this) is a very strong sense of protective loyalty to those near you (Mal's crew). Mal is also the captain who must be obeyed and he is not tolerant of being ordered around. Some of what Mal does may seem cruel, but he is actually testing people's behavior. FOX network tried their best to have the series canceled. This pilot was originally canceled, but shown last as an afterthought when the series originally aired. Joss Whedon said he had about 4-5 seasons worth of material planned and that only adds to the pain of what was lost with only 14 episodes and a movie.
In my opinion, for what it's worth, this "pilot" episode should be viewed after watching the series. It answers questions that haven't been asked yet. Whoever it was at the network that decided to cancel this series was an idiot and should never again be put in a position to decide what is good and what is not.
Respectfully disagree. Best to watch them in the order Whedon intended IMO (even though that means there's a definite "re-pilot" feel to the next couple of episodes). 'Serenity Pt 1 and 2' is still one of the best first episodes of a TV show i've seen regarding the economy of character and world building and the extent to which the show arrives basically fully formed in a way most first episodes don't.

They did not make them reshoot the opening of this episode for more action. They did make them write a new opening episode with studio notes over the course of a weekend. That episode, The Train Job, was the first aired. Best. Leo.

Fox didn't make Whedon re-shoot the opening scene, they made him re-write the entire pilot episode. Fox wanted a faster pace and a more prominent villain.
For me, nothing beats the Farscape Pilot, though Fringe came close. That is because my criteria of what makes a pilot best: How far have the characters come from it at the end of the series? Could you see their potential endpoint in the pilot? If the characters have not changed at all or they are unrecognizable, then the Pilot is not that good as the purpose of the pilot is to set everything up, including the ending. The characters should not be a copy of their pilot selves nor should you be able to discard the pilot, or scenes from it, and still understand the series. My main problem with the Firefly pilot is you can remove certain scenes and the series still works Like Jayne rocking himself in the nook on the stairs when Kaylee is in medbay. Unless they were going to reveal he had a crush on Kaylee, or worried for her above the others because he saw her like a daughter, that had no purpose.
I just recently watched this series for the first because I wanted to see why everyone thinks its soo good. While I did like it and thought it was ok, I did not think it was as good as the only show I have seen that is similar which is FarScape. If you have not seen FarScape I think it is one to consider reacting too.
