    8:58 You laughed that you felt so juvenile laughing at the jokes. Mal and Jayne are 12 at heart. Did you catch the joke with Badger in Shindig? About ten minutes into Shindig, Badger is talking about the ball that Harrow will be at. Badger says "Course, you couldn't buy an invite with a diamond the size of a testicle. I got my hands on a couple." Mal and Jayne look at each other and snicker. Badger angrily says "Of invites." Cracks me up every time I see it and the same for this ep. Special hell. :)

    The trouble with most comedy shows and movies is that after you’ve seen them a few times, the jokes get stale. I only discovered “Firefly” a few years ago too, but I’ve watched OMR at least 20 times and the lines never fail to crack me up. “The SPECIAL Hell!” “But she was naked! And all...articulate!” “Then...can I know her?” Joss Whedon has proven himself to a total assclown in recent years, but I still love this show.

  • @CrayCruz

    Joss totally played with our love for the crew and handed us, like you correctly said, a stand alone funny episode that told us more about the crew and how they depend on each other. More bonding and moving the story along while entertaining us. One of my favorites. It gets better.

    One thing I noticed a while ago that still impresses me is how they include the Chinese. By context, a lot of the Chinese seems to be ppl swearing. So it's like they found a way to swear on tv without having it bleeped out or something. Which I find really cool and intriguing and kinda brilliant. It also gives an idea of what the world was like before all the space travel. China and the US seem to have been the main powers

    I might be mistaken, but I don't believe there was a really whimsical reasoning behind the heavy use of Chinese, but more of a practical approach. The prologue to Firefly/Serenity(mentioned in the opening a few times if memory serves) is essentially that humanity overwhelmed Earth and had to spread out into space to continue to grow and survive. With that huge diaspora of people, a huge percentage of which would be Chinese(around 20% of current humanity is Chinese), so that would be one of the most logical common tongues to adopt to allow communication with the largest number of people. It makes sense, but it's still really cool that they considered that aspect of how our species would change after kinda being scattered to the four winds in the event of an exodus.

    The writing in this show is incredible. The literary references are amazing too.
    In this episode, as Saffron attempts to seduce Wash she says: _"My whole life, I saw nothing but roofs and steeples and the _*_cellar door_*_ . A few days I'll be back to that life and gone from yours. Make this night what it should be. Please? Show me the stars."_
    'Cellar door' is considered the most beautiful phrase in the English language because of its phonaesthetic quality (its spoken beauty with no regard to meaning). Saffron's training as a companion, later identified by Inara, evidently taught her the power of beautiful language in seduction. Wash: _"Whoa. Good myth."_
    The phrase might also be hinting at some of Saffron's backstory - was she enslaved in some way in the past, being locked behind a cellar door? Does that go some way to explaining the life she leads now? We'll never know how this character may have developed in future episodes.
    Interestingly, the reference could also be a nod to the 2001 movie _Donnie Darko_ where the superior sound of 'cellar door' is mentioned in one scene - and then, in a later scene, an actual cellar door features as a time-twisting portal.

    • @Audra1964
      @Audra1964 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting. This character is one I would have loved to have seen develop more. Perhaps something happens where she redeems herself with Mal and is accepted into the crew. With her . . . assets 😮 and other abilities she could be a plus in their line of work. Of course, she would probably always be a female version of Jayne - you would never really know what would happen when the money is good enough.

      Tracy Cameron I think it worked out to be more “authentic” than it would’ve been if the would’ve gotten in correct. Language changes so quickly and if they really are that comfortable with the phrases/language then they would make it their own (look at how Americans use English as an example. We don’t care if it’s “corrrect”, it’s how we say it! Lol)

    I've never researched it, and maybe this has been discussed/clarified at some point in an interview or panel: in that final scene between Mal and Inara, it always gave me pause (just like it did with Inara). Mal *can* be pretty clueless at times, but he is also shown to be particularly clever in his own way. And Mal certainly loves his pranks, and keeping Inara on her heels. So I've enjoyed musing whether Mal was truly just that dense, or if he was just purposely setting Inara up for the "I knew you let her kiss you," line.

    • @Audra1964
      @Audra1964 ปีที่แล้ว

      I vote for the latter. Mal was not that dense. He knew Jayne betrayed Simon and River before he had any definitive proof. And he did love his pranks. He told Simon Kaylee died, for instance, with a dead serious face! I think he said that to Inara just to see her reaction and as payback for being so cheeky about refusing to admit she kissed him.

    One minor point: "Vera needs air around her in order to fire." Yeah, no. No firearm using self-contained cartridge-based ammunition needs air. The oxidizer is contained in the gunpowder, and the powder in the sealed cartridge is ignited by the spark from the cap when struck by the hammer of the gun. As long as Vera is not a flintlock, she can fire just fine in vacuum.

    • @daveolson6001

    What's really weird about the title is, no reactor I've ever seen ever thinks, "This could be about Mal's mother". The only problem I've had with your reactions is that every single episode of this series is heavily driven by witty dialog, yet you stomp all over a LOT of really great lines. I sincerely hope that, by now (2 years later), that you've gone back and rewatched these episodes like all of us have, and just listened to the brilliant lines being laid down all over this show. If you don't, you're doing a disservice to yourself.
    BTW, about the final Mal-Inara scene, EVERYONE falls for the thought that Mal is an idiot, but you really have to think about it to understand, Mal knew EXACTLY what he was doing. He and Inara have 2 incompatible directions in life, and he knows they can never be as long as that's true. She's a companion ... an occupation that Mal could NEVER let continue if they were to get together, and Inara's really independent ... forcing her, either verbally or by her own accord for the sake of the relationship would NEVER work and WOULD eventually come back to destroy their relationship. So, he took the ONLY course of action he could ... and that is to poke fun at it, and he did it so brilliantly that he left her unsure about what he really meant. Look at her face again with this in mind. Either way, Mal not only figured out what she did, but he used it to give them both a way out of admitting anything. He HAD to because they both know that, at least for now, there's no way it was time, or that it would've worked out in this moment.
    So, don't beat yourself up over it, everyone except apparently me misunderstood that ending. I can't figure out why ... not if you really think about Mal's personality, quick wits and protective nature. He's always trying to protect his crew, from any and all threats, even emotional ones. And then, of course, there's the general rule in all great shows, the resident pair of lovelorn characters NEVER get together, because that would destroy the sexual tension. You have this in all the greats like Gunsmoke, where Matt and Kitty had such an affair (or non-affair) for well over 10 years, and each week or so, they'd play into that to get people's hopes up. It's actually 1 of the things that kept people tuning in each week ... to see if they'd give into it ... not the ONLY thing, but 1 of them.

    Okay, about the Chinese.
    This is just a fan idea, it's by no means canon, but the way I always imagined it is that Firefly, Fallout, and Terra Nova are in the same universe. Just at wildly different times. Fallout's nuclear war would be before Terra Nova's "rich people stripped the planet of its resources" which is the "Earth-That-Was" from Firefly. The war from Fallout would be the war wherein the Chinese and the Americans became the last super powers on Earth, the same war in Somalia from Commander Taylor's past in TN. Once all of the resources were used up, some went back in time to restart, and some took off to the stars.

    Who watches TV this way? "Oh my god, is that Clem Frobnitz? Clem Frobnitz? This must be long before he played that teenaged vampire in Millennial Douche when he was 37."

    Re: the China thing. In case nobody else has explained it-- ( if someone has, youcan skip this post.) Joss' original plan was that the English speaking, and Chinese, cultures were almost all that was left of Earth culture. English was the language of the upper class; the working folks spoke Chinese. That had to be adjusted a little, of course-- the actors and the audience were English speaking. And of course, the Chinese fit in pretty well. Any cussing or strongly emotional reaction could be expressed in Chinese, therefore reducing the issue of censorship. And of course, we can get the meaning from context. There are internet sites that give the translation- some of them are pretty clever, or funny.

    Reason for the Chinese is because the Chinese and USA were the only superpowers left and when we resettled space it took both counties to do it...so the language and culture blended by fireflys time line

    All the humans in this place came from Earth. Colony ships were sent out from multiple nations. The large system of worlds in the show were colonized by ships from the US and from China. The two cultures colonized the planets and moons and the cultures cross merged. When you show up on a barren world, two cultures both bring their own stuff...but they need other stuff the OTHER culture has...and that other culture needs things the first culture has...Trade, commerce and eventually the two divergent cultures...merge. Hence, Chinese/US (with a touch of Europe) planetary culture. They might have been fighting each other way back on Old Earth but out here in the frontier, you have to "get along."

    One of the things missed in watching the streaming version of this was the intro opening that was done by Shepherd Book and Malcolm Reynolds. So you need it to get you in the groove for the show. this is the Book version and not the best but maybe someone knows where a better version is. th-cam.com/video/gDaopirdKAk/w-d-xo.html

    You gotta admit this is a very entertaining series, worth its cult following.
    But don't presume any episode is purely standalone.

    Not sure why they put Vera in a spacesuit though, guns do not require air and should work just fine in space.

      Seems less about an oxidizer, but more about extreme temperature. Rapid heating could cause the ammunition to cook off. Freezing could cause the weapon to jam.

      Jane specifically mentions that Vera needs air around her. Most modern firearms the primer and powder will oxidize and can be fired in a vacuum. Here is it probably done for Hollywood reasons.

      I just assumed that they were trying to be incognito... didn't want the pirates to see that they were planning an attack. But as Erik Greene implied, maybe there are no real answers and we can just chalk this one up to Hollywood being Hollywood.
