    TMS time again! This video isn't as dramatic as my first video (link below). I was starting to get depressed again, so I decided to nip it in the bud. Today, I feel great!
    Link to my book, Idiots and Robots. The book is not about TMS. It's fiction about zombies, robots, cults, and dumb people.

    Trigger warning: the story "a satisfied customer" depicts a dude having a serious mental breakdown. You can skip this story and the book will still make sense.
    My first and most dramatic TMS before and after video: • TMS Before and After
    Sorry my video quality isn't amazing. I want to support others who are going through depression, but don't have time to figure out how to make it *fancy*.

    Thanks so much for chronicling your experiences with this. With the stigma against old school ECT it is a bit worrisome thinking about a doctor shooting things into your brain. But seeing how you opened up over the 3 videos, even from one video to another it was a notable change. The end of this video is like a totally different person than the person in the first week of the first video!

      A quick follow up from me - after 49 treatments. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that while I strongly feel TMS therapy is effective, it’s not going to fix your life. Specifically, waking up in the morning is absolutely less of a chore, or what felt like a punishment, before treatment. Personal hygiene was difficult for me as well, because each shower felt like an impossible and energy draining task. And now it’s not. It’s critical not to diminish the importance of just these activities. The desire to wake up, make your bed, brush your teeth and take a shower. And for someone who works from home, as I do, it’s easier to spiral into an abyss.
      But the treatment changed that. First and foremost, I did have to wake up and shower and leave the house to get to my appointments! But over the period of 3 month, the kindness of the office staff, and specifically my treater (the person in the room who ensures the machine says calibrated and tolerated by the patient) brought me back into the world. While my treater wasn’t a therapist, they were friendly, willing to share recipes, and some days, they simply listened.
      But as I mentioned earlier, treatments don’t fix everything. During the depths and grasps of depression on your life, often messes have been left in its wake. Relationships broken, finances in disarray. The “fog” lifts, and your eyes are wide open to how much of “everything” needs to be fixed. That’s where I’m at right now. Overwhelmed.
      Would I recommend TMS? Absolutely. If your insurance will approve it and you can commit the time, it’s an avenue anyone with long term depression should pursue. Advocate for yourself and don’t leave any stone unturned!

    Depression is a chronic illness that never really truly goes away.... You just treat it for the rest of your life. The tricky part of depression is that it can also be a symptom of another disease or caused by a lack of nutrients like vitamin D, or a hormonal imbalance. Thank you for your feedback, I'm probably going to be giving the treatment a try since I've t/f so many other therapies for this.

    Thx for your TMS "diary", I´m ahead of 20 sessions, it´s the first time in my life. I´m suffering from depression since my childhood, and my way of treating it (unconsciously) with canabis in my youth, I started working, fighting, etc. at the age of 21. I´m 48 years old now, did four therapies, tried a bunch of antidepressants (venlafaxin, amitritylin, etc.), augmentation with lithium. This spring I did a series of 11 ECT-Sessions, very exhausting and the seeting wasn´t as protective as I may have needed.
    I also extended my sports acitivity, and, like you say in your other video: running is great! My body is really gettin happy before I run. 🙂
    I am hopeful, that the rTMS-treatment will support me in my motivation to get a better, more productive and happier life.

But I am so happy, that my experience with intense sports acitvities (I also do a daily workout for about 20 min and join a karate dojo 2-3 times a week) gave me back a feeling to control my strenght and mental fitness-level. Hi Kristin, thanks for sharing your TMS experience. I’m currently trying to figure out which might be better to try (TMS, ECT, Ketamine) & was wondering if you had tried either of the other two therapies? Anti-depressants, mood stabilizers & 15 years of talk therapy haven’t worked. I’ve been so depressed & physically tired that I’ve become a shut in at age 35. I haven’t been able to work for 5 1/2 years now. There are days when the only reason I keep going & don’t fully give up on living is for my husband & my mom. I couldn’t bare to hurt them that much. If TMS or one of the other therapies could actually help me enjoy living again I’d be beyond grateful. Thanks again for sharing.

      I have not tried ECT or Ketamine. ECT would be my last resort because it has some undesirable side effects. Ketamine sounds amazing to me, but back when I was first getting TMS, Spravato didn't exist yet, I don't think. The only option for ketamine was infusions that cost a thousand bucks! So anyway, TMS is my first choice because there are no side effects. I hope you're able to pursue one of these soon. Hang in there! I know it's hard.

    Hi Kristin. I just watched this video after watching the first two. My 26 yr old son will start TMS soon for anxiety and OCD over ruminating thoughts, he also has autism (high functioning). It was interesting to see that you also had treatment for anxiety, not just depression and that it worked! Insurance will not cover it for OCD, and the charge for 36 treatments is over 12K! They said about $250 to $350 per treatment without insurance. He may get a discount for being a cash patient. I wonder what the place you go to charges per treatment. We are in Southern California where everything costs more. BUT I'm wondering if it's worth the cost if it wears off and one needs to keep doing it.

    • @HookerTheWriter
      @HookerTheWriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't know how I got so lucky, but insurance was covering my depression protocol and my Dr. offered to throw the anxiety protocol in for free! I'm up in Portland. If it were going to cost 12k, I never would have been able to do it. My best advice is this: HE HAS DEPRESSION and when he takes the PHQ-9 he's going to be very liberal with how high he rates his depression. Insurance puts a lot of stock in the patient's PHQ-9 being high at the beginning of treatment and low at the end. I'm not saying you should commit insurance fraud, but maybe he's more depressed than he originally thought?

    • @VeryLikeLeigh
      @VeryLikeLeigh 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@seerguru6896 If your insurance covers it then do it. The treatment for OCD is different from the treatment for depression. Talk to the place that will do it and ask which treatment would be best. My son has had 21 treatments so far for OCD only. It seems to be working somewhat. He's been better over the weekends, not having meltdowns like he would before. Weekends are always his worst time for behavior, (he has a job Mon - Fri) Honestly I feel like this is a VERY EXPENSIVE experiment. It might help for a while but the effects wear off as Kristen said and then you need to do it again. If the insurance covers it that's another thing but if you have to pay out of pocket like we do I don't feel like it's worth it. My son will have a new insurance company in the new year and I will try what Kristen suggested about him being depressed, as he kind of is anyway. And have him go thru the depression protocol just to see how that works for him. If that fails, our next "experiment" will be to do ECT, which is what my son REALLY wants. He OCD's about that being the solution to his problems. But he can't change the fact that he has mild autism. He works with a therapist for the OCD but he does not do the work required, he just wants to be angry over things he ruminates on. I wanted to try the TMS in the meantime just to appease him. I don't want him to do ECT, which works great for depression. he does not have debilitating depression. I'm afraid of the long term brain effects, but we may have to try that. He may need to go back to medication, right now he's on Lamictal a mood stabilizer which really isn't doing much. He has been off Prozac for 3 years. We were hoping to avoid another SSRI.

    i heard about it and got excited that maybe this is something that can help me since i have major depression although i've never taken medication for it i assume i would be resistant to the medication. i also have a personal bias from seeing so many people take medication for it and not get better and get worse from side effects that make their life more difficult. also tms just seems scary. at first it sounded really good and painless but after a little bit of research i'm finding people who's depression and anxiety got worse after trying tms. i'm trying to get therapy but the process of insurance approval is long and idk if it will cover the costs completely. if it doesn't then i won't be able to afford it. i don't think therapy will work for me either though so i don't want to fall for magical thinking and go oh ketamine or this can save me which is what i was thinking before but ketamine therapy doesn't work for everyone either so maybe its just an endurance game and i just have to keep enduring until some newer technologies come out or the current ones get better. there is a pill for my disease that's at 51% or 52% so i'm hoping that later down the line it will be around 80% and i would happily take that medication to keep my disease in remission. hard to find true relief, but maybe i just have to hold out and wait for these kinds of things to become more trustworthy and or reliable

    What version of TMS did you do for the anxiety treatment? (rTMS dTMS, iTBS, etc?) and where did they place it on your head? I am curious to know which version only requires 8 minutes for the anxiety protocol. The place I am currently at we are doing the 3 minute TBS depression one, but not getting a response from. The anxiety protocol is 27 minutes here.

    • @HookerTheWriter
      @HookerTheWriter  ปีที่แล้ว

      I did rtms, depression on the left side, anxiety on the right side. I’ve never done theta burst. I’m sorry you’re not getting a response. Maybe they could re-measure your head to make sure they’re hitting the right spot?

  • @viperking6573

    Hello! Could you explain what you mean by "getting mapped"? I'm also going through iTBS and I wanted to make the most of it!

    • @HookerTheWriter
      @HookerTheWriter  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Getting mapped is when they make measurements on your head, estimate a precise place on your head, then they send a "pulse" with the TMS machine to that spot. If they have found the right spot, your thumb twitches because that location on your brain is connected to your thumb. From there, they adjust the placement for TMS treatment. It's like, after they find the thumb twitch spot, they move a certain number of centimeters from there to find the depression spot. I'm not sure if I explained that well, but I did my best!

      I felt great until the end of 2023, then I relapsed and instead of more TMS, I got Spravato because it's less time consuming. The Spravato worked! I feel great. :)

    Who covers this in the land of the bills?

    • @HookerTheWriter
      @HookerTheWriter  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thine insurance shall covereth if thoust already partook of medicinals and said medicinals failed to set fire to thine soul. Plus I had to pay a ten dollar co-pay. It's the responsibility of the psychiatrist to make a case to your insurance company, so the first step is getting a consultation with a TMS place.

    If your depression continues to be persistent perhaps consider Deep Brain Stimulation under the new protocol by UC San Fran. It’s invasive but the stimulation is constant.

      Well it is CBT based therapy, more on thoughts and values. I have been exam preparing for the last months and I went through every bad feeling that was repressed for the whole year. Then I found a book called "Get out of your mind and into your life" which is written by steven hays. I really benefited from the book, but its wordiness made it a bit hard to read, now i am reading another book by the same author called "A Liberated Mind: How to Pivot Toward What Matter", the book is way better. To be honest ACT changed my life, even tho it is a slow progress for me. That's why i hope you try it, i think you can do it along with TMS.

      I struggle with recurrent depression too. This might sound like a bummer but I’ve stopped hoping for it to be gone forever, that way I’m always prepared for it to come back. Hang in there and keep seeking treatment.

    All you need to do is change your diet. Nearly everyone who gets depressed is also low on essential vitamins and minerals, especially magnesium.
    Being vegan is also a very quick way to get depressed and stay depressed. Plants need the right nutrients, and so do humans.
    Plenty of meat, fish, fruit and vegs + 300 mg magnesium glycinate/day will do the trick. Good luck !

    • @MetalCoreMagget

      Not hardly. Most doctors check that before starting treatment.
      If it were that simple though….

    • @jacquesmertens3369
      @jacquesmertens3369 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MetalCoreMagget There's many elements you can't just check via a blood test in a reliable way. Magnesium is notoriously difficult to check because you can only find what is being transported at the very moment the test is done, but that tells you nothing about the amount that is stored, and it tells you nothing about the distribution of magnesium throughout your body. It also doesn't tell you anything about the quality of your nerves, neurons etc. which are essential for stress resistance, signalling paths inside your brain and for your overall health & wellbeing. Depression is one of many symptoms that result from nerve damage. Depression is essentially a neurological disease and therefore very treatable. With the right nutrients damaged nerves can usually heal themselves to a very large extent unless they have been cut.
      If you don't have a psychosis, personality disorder or similar, if you have always lead a normal life and then suddenly hit the wall, that means your depression is perfectly treatable in a matter of 4-5 months. And yes, it's as simple as that.
