TMS Before and After

  • TLDR: I was severely depressed, I got TMS, now I'm not depressed.
If you are SUICIDAL, call 1-800-273-8255 for help.
Update 9/18/22: I WROTE A BOOK ABOUT MY MENTAL HEALTH
More info here: • Silly Depressed. I wro...
    Kindle: tinyurl.com/nw...
    Paperback: tinyurl.com/3z...
I feel a need to mention- I'm not making any money on these videos and no one asked me to make them. I know the videos show ads, but I don't have control over that. The reason I made these videos is because it's the kind of information I would have found helpful while I was looking for treatment. I'm just trying to be helpful.
    (2/21/19 update! • 4 & 1/2 months post TM... )
(11/22/19 update • Second time getting TM... --- I got TMS again)
This is me just before starting TMS (transcranial magnetic stimulation), at 3 weeks of treatment, 7 weeks of treatment, and then four weeks post treatment. Before and throughout treatment, I sought out testimonials from others. It was comforting to me. I wanted to pay it forward.
The TMS worked and my PHQ-9 score went from 23 (out of 27) to 0 in a matter of 8 weeks. My treatment plan started with 6 weeks every day Monday - Friday, but we extended it to 8 weeks after a remapping revealed that I needed a higher prescription.
    More info about my depression...
Symptoms: lack of motivation, maladaptive daydreaming, morbid thoughts, brain fog, repetitive uncomfortable thoughts (like OCD), loss of appetite, feeling worthless and like I'm only a burden.
About me: 35, stay-at-home wife and mother, otherwise healthy, lifelong depression sufferer.
Other treatments tried before TMS: All sorts of drugs, acupuncture, gluten-free diet, whole30 diet, quitting caffeine and alcohol, neurofeedback, EMDR and hypnotherapy for bad memories, talk therapy, exercise. All of these things had their benefits, but none of them were sufficient.
Received TMS at Cascade TMS in Portland, OR with a Neurostar machine. (Loved my doctor and staff at this location. Highly recommend.) It was "rTMS" (repetitive TMS as opposed to deep TMS). I asked the technician about the difference and she said that there's no significant difference- the whole "deep TMS" thing is more like a marketing tactic. Anyway, don't get hung up on rTMS vs. dTMS.
I'd love to answer questions and offer encouragement, so please don't hesitate to leave a comment!

I have been struggling with severe depression for about 20 years. I have been on just about every medication out there. A little over a year ago they did DNA testing only to find out that I am resistant to pretty much all of them. I felt completely defeated as I am currently on 5 different meds to try and manage my daily life. I somehow saw an ad for TMS on Facebook and have been asking my psychiatrist about it. She said I would probably be a great candidate for it. (I’m really wondering why I am just learning about this now and why it’s never been brought up). I am skeptical but the thought of possibly getting off some of these meds is an exciting thought. I am holding out a glimmer of hope and if it works I will be yelling about this from the rooftops. I don’t know why this isn’t something that is discussed more often and after all these years I am just learning about it now!

If you are on the fence about trying TMS therapy, maybe I can inspire you as well. I just finished my TMS therapy two weeks ago and I can't recall ever feeling this good in my life! I just turned 60 and have suffered the torture if depression since I was a child. I tried every form of treatment available throughout my life including cognitive therapy, many different medications, homeopathic therapy, electroconvulsive therapy and hypnotherapy which all had limited effect with terrible side effects. TMS made sense to me because it treats the disorder at its source rather than simply managing the symptoms as traditional treatments do. I'm sleeping so much better and feel more relaxed and calm. My responses to anything that I encounter are much more reasonable than before without catastrophizing things with anger. My physical pain is much more manageable as well which enables me to be more active than before. I can honestly say that I feel joy for the first time in my life and look forward to the rest of it with interest and enthusiasm. If you haven't yet decided to try TMS, I highly reccomend it.

I am resonating so strongly with your observation that it has been your sole job for a long time to cope with depression and that now it is additionally difficult to break out of that existence and to undertake a new job -- a new way of being. I'm finishing my 4th week of TMS following a very bad year-long depressive episode and I think beginning to feel better bit by bit. I've been wondering if some of my continuing fatigue and lack of motivation is because I'm reluctant or afraid to break out of my condition of barely living. Thinking of it as leaving a dreadful old job and embarking on a new job of my dreams is helpful, and a mindset I want to nurture every day now.
Looking ahead, I am concerned that if TMS truly does help me it will continue to be available and covered by my insurance. This of course, is a major struggle for all who must deal with health care in the USA.
Thank you, Kristin, for sharing your experiences. Best wishes to you and to everyone who has commented here.

Yesterday was my first TMS session. Felt some second thoughts going in there and thinking about the time commitment considering my issues are more generalized anxiety but after the first session I did notice lucid dreaming and fewer obtrusive thoughts. What I'm really hopeful for is anxiety improvements because I'm mostly short of breath. It never ends.

I appreciate your vulnerability and documenting this. I'm at 21 out of 36 sessions and feeling pretty discouraged. No improvement and perhaps even a touch more despondent. They just increased my session from 3 to 8 minutes and using something called "double theta" pulses. I've been contemplating reaching for the "emergency exit" if this doesn't get better. It sounds like it took you at least 4 weeks to start to feel better tho, so that makes me hopeful. May you continue to attain your indigenous wellness.

TMS continues to work for weeks after treatment ends. It’s so hard to wait when you’re suffering, I know. If it doesn’t work, please try Spravato! I want to ask if you're feeling better, but I know it'll probably take longer than that. Hang in there!

Thank you for posting this video. I’m going to a consultation next week. I have severe generalized anxiety which is causing depression. I’m to the point I’ll try anything. My only concern is the cost. 😢

I hope you have insurance- I think it's typical for insurance to cover it. If not, maybe your doctor will work with you on the price. I know, TMS is a big commitment! I hope it goes well!

    4 questions
    1. Are you an ad
    2. If not, when did you realize you needed this treatment and how was it recommended to you?
    3. Were you worried of potential side-effects and did you incur any?
    4. Did the process feel uncomfortable, and how long did it take?
    Thank you!

I am not an ad nor do I earn ad revenue on these videos (I know, youtube shows ads on it, but I don't have control over that). I realized I needed *something* when I was deeply depressed, already taken drug after drug, been to counseling, hypnotherapy... the list of treatments goes on. I heard about someone who had a brain implant for their depression and while researching that, I found TMS (which is NOT a brain implant). I looked for testimonials on youtube and reddit, talked to my psychiatrist, and thought it looked promising. There are no side effects, so I wasn't worried about that. The process is not painful, maybe just a little annoying. Feels like someone is tapping on your head. Treatments last about 20 minutes and I got them every day Monday through Friday for 8 weeks. Most people do 6 weeks, but I needed more. The only downside is that it's tedious and time consuming. To me, though, totally worth it! Like, I don't know where I'd be without it.

Yes! It’s been about a year since I last had TMS and I’m able to maintain my mental health with medicine and meditation.

@@HookerTheWriter Hey Kristin. That is soo great! Super happy to hear you still feel better. Partly because of your experience, I decided to have rTMS therapy, which starts tomorrow for me at the Charité in Berlin.

Thanks for posting this video. It was truly encouraging bc I am with you. I suffered with depression for soooo long that I am just existing versus living. I am not sure what living is. I am in my 4th week of TMS and I don't see any difference right now. Maybe one day or two I feel different but it goes away. The meds make me sweat profusely so I am cutting back and they nest don't help that much. I am not sure if I have the wrong combination or what but I needed to hear some better news. I wonder if I need remapping? It was hard to get mapped in the first place and saw very little movement. The places I've been are new at this so I am hoping time will tell.

TMS is very gradual, so hang in there! I realized TMS had worked when one day I saw an acquaintance from a distance at Target and I decided to call out their name so I could say hi instead of avoiding them.

@@HookerTheWriter Thanks for the encouragement 🙏. I need it. I truly understand how sometimes the things we think are small, like simply talking to someone, are big things when you are in the hole of depression. Just brushing my teeth can b a win for me on some days. I am so praying that TMS will do great things for my life like it has yours and.so many others. Thanks for sharing your experience. I just learned about the "dip" and now I will keep in mind that remapping can occur to improve treatment. That helps alot to know that it is more options going through this. God bless you for being honest and bold sharing your story so publicly. It's inspiring

@@HookerTheWriter Oh I avoid people like the plague since my depression and anxiety have gotten worse. I finally reached out for help since my meds no longer seemed effective. I go for mapping tomorrow morning. I'm nervous about the whole experience, and nervous that it won't work. But what I'm more nervous about, and why I'm giving TMS a try, is that I will continue to have no motivation, sleep all the time, never want to talk to anyone, and feel like I'm walking through mud. I hope it helps! Thank you for your video, and I'm so happy for you.
