To answer the pipe question, it seems like they decided to stitch the levels together faithfully, and the original levels for the underground and water levels start with pipes to take you there. The castles don't

if anyone has trouble remembering the correct path for 8-4, my trick is to always take the pipe immediately following any lava pit. do that, and it will take you straight to bowser

I never quite understood what people's problem was with the game pausing for half a second when getting a power-up. Is it that big a deal?

It's annoying because it sometimes steals your jump inputs and interrupts the flow of the game. I've died to the pauses before. In the NSMB series, it isn't annoying except when you play multiplayer, then it's really bothersome as someone ELSE grabs a power-up and messes your jumps up
