    7:08 when I was a kid I had one of those bootleg "200000 in 1" cartridges where it was just the Mario ROM but broken over and over, and I remember playing this "level"! :D
    And I remember wondering why it was unbeatable and made no sense. Good innocent times.

    3:08 Those aren't the pixels of an enemy on the top. That's sprite 0. It just overlaps the bottom two rows of the coin in the status bar. (You can see it if you jump over top of the coin in the status bar during normal play.) Those pixels are what tell the game that it has finished drawing the status bar and can now reposition the scroll position in the nametables to show your position on the level map properly. That's how the status bar remains static while the level scrolls by below it. So something clearly broke the status bar and sprite 0 collision never occurred. When the collision doesn't happen, the game freezes.
    There are pixels of an enemy on the bottom right though.

      It's interesting that almost any way you can freeze the game (the other common way being a completely black screen) causes it to shift the status bar over like that. I've always been curious what the exact mechanism going on is that causes it.

      I feel like most crashed are actually caused by this (I watched the old series recently). The status bar was broken almost every time when the game froze.
      Maybe this is a key to avoiding softlocks.
      At 3:44 if you go frame by frame (using . ) you can see how something seems to corrupt the entire drawing of the screen. One frame even shows the time on 00Z. Probably some redundancy errors here as it is just for a frame.

    Hi Kosmic, I don't know if you know this, but sometimes you can win and see the next stage after touching a flagpole and falling into a hole... You'll just have to wait long enough, and Mario would fall from the sky, and if he touches a solid block, you'd win. :D

    Back when I was a kid I learned hexadecimal and binary just so I could figure out how to generate all 256 possible warp codes for worlds -128 to 127. So, I have a full list of all those codes, but I still saw new stuff here, probably thanks to your other codes. Very cool! The ones where you have to go through 20 copies of 2-1 are the really annoying ones.

    As a software engineer, I have to say your example about using a text editor to open a non-text file at 14:17 was a fantastic and relatable analogy for what's going on here. It's a really great way to explain this to people who aren't programmers.

    Here's a horrible idea:
    Someone should make a romhack, where you are able to select all the glitched levels, but all changes to the level gets stored back into the memory.
    Breaking a block? That's turning a 2 into a 0. Stomping a koopa? That's a 6 into a 5. And so on. (Values are guesses here)
    In the original levels, that would just mean permanent changes to levels.
    In the glitch levels, it would seriously mess up the game code :D

    Reminiscing my 15 years playing this very nostalgic game (I was 5 back then), X-1 was the only glitched level I continouosly play/practice, though it's weird that my console already had the glitch worlds hack imported directly, and that got me to play all of what's available. Feels good barely remembering the levels from watching this and the other video you made with this years ago.

    Between this and the Tennis glitch world video from Retro Game Mechanics Explained, TH-cam seems to want me to think about glitch worlds in Mario a lot more than normal. Not that I'm complaining - it's a fascinating topic

    (6:40) I think you actually stomped that Cheep-Cheep, which is still quite cool in its own right, being in such a narrow passage like that.
    (12:37) Fun fact: If you wait long enough after falling into a pit during the flagpole victory march, the music will stop "hiccupping", and then Mario will eventually reappear at the top of the screen after a few minutes.
    (16:14) Combo with an infinite time code? Or a code that prevents you from dying to time up, perhaps?
    Bismuth certainly is a cool guy.

    8:13 If you're interested, I recently made my own NES emulator with Game Genie support higher than 8 codes. Although if you're just using an emulator, I think Mesen already allows that, and it's more feature complete than my project. I think you're using actual hardware though? So an emulator probably isn't what you're looking for. Just throwing it out there anyway. It's all up to you!

    Hello Guys! Here's Why These Worlds Are Glitched:
    This Happens Because The Game Uses Garbage Data To Put In These Worlds! And As For Why The Minus World And Any Of These Bugged Underground And Water Levels Loop, It's Because The Section Where You Come Out Of The Pipe And Beat The Level Doesn't Exist In The Level, So It Loops It Instead! I Hope You Found My Knowledge Helpful!

      Never expected to see you here. And yes, this information is accurate. The reason why these levels look like some corrupted mess is because the game doesn't know what to put in these levels and to fill in the level it either is a copy of a used level or it puts random crap into the level and changes the theme of the level into stuff like underwater, underground, overworld, castle, or sky bonus area. As for why those repeat water levels (like the american and european minus world) loop is because the area where you come out of the pipe to get to the flagpole doesn't exist, so instead of taking you to a black screen, it loops the level over and over again

    Hey Kosmic, just wanted to share a little story here, back in the mid 90s as I was in elementary school I had a couple of classmates whom we would exchange and borrow different famiclone cartridges between each other, one time I borrowed this famiclone cartridge which contained several pirated games (I’m sure you know the ones I’m talking about) and it had some of these glitch worlds, not every one but the more interesting ones from your previous video...
    For over two decades I’ve been wanting to replay those with no luck, until I discovered The Irate Gamer’s video about these glitched worlds, a few years later I discovered your video, thanks to your Game Genie code I created a Rom Hack that lets you skip to any world you want from the start including the glitched worlds, thank you.

    World B-1 was always one of my favorites, back when I'd modify the 3-line Game Genie code from my Camerica book back in the early 90s. Occasional random enemies helped to make it interesting once in a while.

    12:42 hey kosmic! So fun fact, if you wait long enough it actually does count down and you go on to the next level. I tested it in 8-2 with the flagpole screen wrap glitch and it took a little while but eventually a flag pops up and the music plays all the way and the next level starts

    3:02 reason why it crashes is because of an invalid "row of bricks" tile that goes wayyyy too low than the game allows it.

    10:11 i know why that happended! its the reason for bruce's exsitience all of those patterns on koopas, bowser and stuff are normally green in other levels so to make them blue while not using too much ram they everything shares the same color in 8-4 the problem is bowser should be green so what it does is that as soon as the axe loads they all turn green i know this made no sense but whatever

    I remember those bootleg 1000 in 1 game sets solid in the US at one point. One had a repeat section of Super Mario Bros that forced cheats and send you to minus world and other levels in different color palletes and music

    (1:39) That's not exactly right. Normally, stairs and those types of wall do use the same tiles. However, the way level data is stored is as a list of commands that say things like "generate a row of n brick blocks at this position", "generate a pipe here", "generate a tree platform here", etc., and some of those commands generate different tiles depending on the level type. In particular, the commands to generate rows or columns of solid tiles generate different tiles in different level types, but there's also a command to generate ascending staircases (which means each staircase only takes two bytes of level data), and that command always generates the same tiles.
    (1:29) Another example of this is that each brick-with-powerup has two versions: one with a light-colored line on top for outdoor levels, and another without a line on top for every other level type. The code for generating invisible 1-up blocks has a bug where, after checking if it should generate the block at all (invisible 1-up flag), it jumps to the code for generating a brick with an item, and so if you're not in an outside level, it thinks it has to switch to an alternate version of the invisible 1-up without a line on top, and it gets confused and instead generates a block that does have a line on top. (I _think_ it happens to still be a 1-up block, by coincidence.)
    (6:51) So that one block is probably supposed to be an invisible 1-up.
    (8:38) There's also for some reason a command to change the palette, but I think it doesn't take effect until something forces the palette to reload (like getting a fire flower, which changes Mario's palette).

    Do glitch world's work on All-stars SMB1/LL? I know they do with SMB2 and don't with SMB3 but I've never tried it with SMB1 or LL...
    If they do work then it'd be interesting to see how they differ from the originals, if they do at all!

      It's possible, though it's a lot easier to crash the game. I myself used a Canadian Game Genie on my US system once, using the code that should have just unlocked all normal levels for the first save slot on Lost Levels, but what it did for some reason instead was extend it so that you could go past D-4 at the end, all the way to the numeric limit, and it would take you to areas very much like these. An interesting bit is that the graphics that All-Stars shows at the start of a level to inform you about what enemies are present would also be messed up and show all kinds of random enemies that were not necessarily also in the level you were about to play. I've never been able to precisely replicate what happened on my SNES all that time ago so far, despite messing around with PAR codes in the memory debugger in SNES9x.
