    Thanks, Drew! I appreciate how you draw the connections between instincts of other types; I haven’t seen many (maybe any) enneagram aficionados do that so far.

    I love how raw and unscripted this is, especially since it's so on point. Well done, man. Seriously. I'm just getting into the enneagram. Looks like sx6w5 might be where I'm at most often, though it took a minute to rule out type 1. Good to know so I can grow. Thanks, brother. Totally makes sense now why I was so motivated to write my book - the Forest of Insecurities.

      So sorry for the delay. Thanks so much for watching and digging in to the work! I put a hard boundary on my time in the last year so I could write a book, which I just finished the first draft 🙌🏼 Know that I always appreciate every remark/response and try to get back to each and every one.

      I’m working on a book this year and fully immersed.
      I’ve been a therapist for over 20 years, so I guess I have an advantage of sitting in this kind of work every day. But with the Enneagram, I dug deep for two years straight, and really tried to develop as much understanding as I could. In many ways I was self taught, so I just picked up as many books as possible. I think Riso and Hudson are pretty good and so is Beatrice Chestnut, if you wanna start there.

    • @drewnewkirk

      Just a healthy awareness that everything is flawed, everything is capable of disappointing. Watch out for extremes. But, when you got a good eye you’ll usually pick well… and when you don’t you lick your wounds and keep going with new wisdom

    How do you differentiate between a self-preserving 6 and self-preserving 9?

    • @drewnewkirk
      @drewnewkirk  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’d watch the overview videos on 6’s and 9’s. You have to start with their motivations. Then apply that to the subtypes

  • @grace2479
    @grace2479 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Your videos are super helpful! I'm still not sure if my main type is 4 or 6. I have a lot of 4 qualities and think i might be 4w5 so/sp but also have very strong 6 fear/anxiety/doubt as well as get angry easily and super suspicious of authority. Could that just be tritype? i'm 469 or 468.

    • @drewnewkirk
      @drewnewkirk  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I definitely could be that you have 6 or 4 as your second highest score so have a very strong influence there, so yes, definitely part of your tritype I’d say. Keep playing around with the unconscious motivation and see what wins out, wanting to be unique and avoiding mediocrity or creating a safe world for yourself. One might be a stronger motivation. But in the end there’s no rush on this. You are doing the good work of self exploration already which is fundamental, keep it up
      Drew

      @@drewnewkirkhow could you have a 4 as your subtype when it should be a 5 or 7 for 6? That doesn't make any sense to me. The only other numbers is I thought an unhealthy 6 takes on the negative traits of a 3 and we take on the healthy aspects of 9s when we're healthy.

    • @drewnewkirk

    I am pretty sure I am a type 6, partly because I am never entirely sure of anything, and partly because I have been inventing worst case scenarios in my mind since I was preschool age.
    However, I don't relate to the usual subtype descriptions.
    I am consciously more focused on my closest relationships and on intense interests and experiences than anything else, yet I do not fit the profile of a counterphobic sx dominant. I am usually cautious in most areas of my life.
    I can be reckless and charge into the fire, but only when I have had time to think about it, and have concluded that it is worth the risk, OR if someone I love is being threatened. Otherwise, I prefer strategy and diplomacy over confrontation.
    I relate most to the self preservation subtype description, although it pains me to admit that.
    I don't relate AT ALL to the common stereotype of self preservation being about resources, financial security, or physical comfort. I enjoy those things, but I would throw them away in a heartbeat for the right reasons or the right person. In fact, I have often fantasized about being a free spirit who is not tied to anything. This creates a lot of internal conflict, but the need for security usually wins.
    My relationships always take priority over physical safety and security.
    I will always prefer compromise and negotiation over conflict, but if I am pushed too hard or backed into a corner, I will come out fighting, and I will win because I know my opponents.
    I am often underestimated by people who think I am always going to be kind and sweet.
    I also do not relate to descriptions of the cool, rule bound social six. They annoy me to no end, and I terrify them with my "recklessness".
    The only thing that makes sense to me is that I am probably a type 6 sp/sx. I am safety oriented, but money, resources, and physical security are not what make me feel "safe". My relationships are what does that for me.
    I will do almost anything for the people I love, but if they f*** me over or break my trust badly enough, then my relationship with them will be history.
