Yep, like a PC, you're never done upgrading a sim rig
Hi, race car driver here. I tested a $70,000 full motion racing sim back in 2018 and helped provide feedback to the developers of it. It was almost undrivable compared to a static seat. It did not at all help with feeling the car, it just made it feel like a roller coaster attraction. If you do motion upgrades, make them subtle changes in motion.
I am a motorcycle rider with enough track days by now. Tried vr racing recently and crashed about 100 times in an hour, because my biggest complaint was that I did not feel the motorcycle, the handlebars ect.
Soo my question, how far into the immersion is too much would you say?
What are race drivers always chasing? Balance. What is Balance? The point at which tyre slip angle is exceeded and the drivers preference of break away front (understeer/tight) to rear (oversteer/loose).
The fastest drivers are the ones that can feel and use the tyre right at the threshold of maximum slip angle with the best coupling of front and rear.
No sim will ever reproduce the feeling of the tyre slip angle and the dynamics it creates in a chassis that real drivers feel.
A sedan with not enough tyre, no aero and low spring and bar rates will actual move through all 3 axis quite a lot. May even feel like a roller coaster to someone from go karts and open wheelers
@@diegojosephiahard to say. VR is good, butt kicker is very good with haptic feedback. I would say this video shows pretty much the limit of what I would consider necessary for realism to feel the car.
I just want pads that press on my right side when I turn left. Also a cable that yoinks my head right, so I can develop Piastri neck.
like i said in my post, Racing Sim helps teaches us about Racing thus giving us the knowledge. It can never replace Real Life racing experience because we cannot feel the G-force, tire pressure, Body-roll, road surface and so on. So no point in wasting over $1,000 USD on a Racing Sim setup.
I got a SIM rig with butt kicker and pedal vibration as well, but from what I've heard, one of the best upgrades for a realistic feeling is not necessarily a motion rig, but simply a seatbelt that tensions when braking. Look it up, they are made specifically for sim racing seats
also, with my sim rig, i have a butt kicker mounted where he as it, but also as well, had a subwoofer near my pedals to simluate road noise near my feet since i primarily do rally sims, which i need to feel the conditions, think he should also try that out
You mfs are building the matrix lmao
I have a QS-BT1 and it's the most immersive piece of equipment I have besides VR.

@@theshanamaster Bro that's genius. Gonna try that tonight, thanks!
Motion platform and belt tensioners are the final boss of sim rig upgrades. They won’t make you faster, but if immersion is the ultimate objective, they’re must-haves combined with VR.
For the good of the Optimum channel! For science! Let’s gooooo!
Yep, have both motion and an active belt tensioner on mine. Arguably a belt tensioner is more additive as a helpful tool to better understand certain g-forces under cornering and braking, especially the Qubic BT-1 that offers its own unique haptic effects alongside tension of the harnesses. Lots of great information added to pure feeling alongside just being very fun to have. Both it and motion ultimately are largely immersion tools that I personally adore. And they are not cheap.
The amount of money you can spend on this hobby is pretty much a bottomless pit
This
Idk why he is upgrading this rig when it’s clear he needs to go with a profile rig. So much better for a project like this and can go crazy with 3D printing and mounting stuff.
The best Vibration is having one on each corner and one on the seat. Once you get it dialed in you can feel how each wheel is reacting to the ground. Game changer from 1 bass shaker
Great Rig! ... Buuut you can do much more in terms of immersion:
- Seatbelt tensioner for brake- and G-forces (eg. Qubic System BT1)
- Rumbel on the Throttle from Simagic (or an Active Pedal, but the difference just for TC isn't worth it)
- Light Sim with the Philips Hue system
- An Active H-Shifter with Gear-Lockout, for H-Shiftet Cars (from Bash Pro)
- 4-Corner Rumble from Slip-Angle (or Full Motion, but the Rumble-Kit brings you 80% there for much less)
- Tracktion Loss & Surch Platform (DIY or e.g. Quibic Systems CH2)

Motion systems are a game changer, especially in vr. I highly recommend. There are two types of motion simulators, distracting ones that tilt you around, and immersive ones that subtlety rotate you around your center of gravity. Go for the later. It’s not about shaking you about like a cheap amusement ride, it’s about subtly moving earths gravity in relation to you to simulate the gforces of turns and acceleration/braking. It can be as big a leap as vr was, and it’s the most thrilling upgrade. The one I used was custom made so I can’t give recommendations, but diy is an option if you’re inclined. If you can raise your seat at all I’d recommend remounting the buttkicker to the bottom if possible since that’s where you’d feel the vibrations irl from where the seats mounted.
are the motion systems fast enough to be in sync with in-game car?
The mounting of the buttkicker looked pretty sketchy to me. Hopefully he used some locktite. Vibration feedback should not wiggle when in use. That creates noise, and makes feedback less reliable and strong.
@@tsushima33After a little research, point 1 here is many of them are not in the "affordable" range; the 4 I saw within the midrange pricing point for these (and I won't include brand names as my original comment did and was deleted by TH-cam, this is v2) had polling rates of 800, 1200, 1200, and 1500 respectively. The only one to have in-site reviews showed promise, with the most in-depth review stating that they tested it at in-game equivalent speeds of 30, 60, 90, and 120 mph on Rally-style tracks where possible. They had an absolutely glowing review of its performance at all these speeds, and with Rally having many more turns than most other racing styles I'd say they should in general have plenty of breathing room for performing quickly enough.
@@tsushima33 Yes
Motion sins are incredible, the reason a lot of enthusiasts don’t get them is because it actually makes you slow in lap times but for immersion it is great

So cool watching you get into sim racing. Enjoy the hangs with Will next week!
You're gonna loose allot of "resolution" in the butkicker vibration because of the mounting method. If you scan the side of it and the back of the seat to make an intsert, then strap the thing against the seat you'll get allot more transfer of the vibration. All in all amazing work though!
Yep, mounting is vital for any kicker, can use similar to engine mounts to isolate and ensure good contact on very rigid rigs to help. One of my rigs I mounted rear kickers on stalks which worked really well, felt like you had a proper rear end and could really feel what it was doing - good to experiment and plan it out for sure. They also work well with two or more placed on solid shell seats like you say. The original Realtus Force Feel seats and similar new ones are actually really imersive as well - add nice effects for braking and long cornering too.. well worth the money! 👍
Well pointed out! 👏
I'm not a racing sim person, but I play a space sim called Star Citizen, using dual flight sticks.
I love my bass shaker, I only wish the game supported it with telemetry like the racing sims do for tuning the feedback. So jealous of that control.
the 3d scanner and printing is simply astonishing !!🤯🤯
My best racing sim experience was by far a vbox , the butt force feed back is way more important than VR for immersion . The forces of accelerating braking and hitting curbs simulated through seat movements truly made it great practice

When I was a small child, in the early 1980s, there was a racing arcade slot machine in front of a department store in our town.
I googled it and found out that this was the first of its kind. It was called “Nürburgring”.
The special thing about this device was that it had complete hydraulics. You had to really get into it. The device was massive and swung outwards in the curves. A great simulation of centrifugal force. Absolute fun!

the thing I love most about driving is the g force. the turning and accelerating is something that is so hard to replicate. there are ways to do it by tilting the sim up so gravity pushes you in your seat. you also do the side, or down, or whatever. that's how airplane sims are done. the only issue is really jerky movements don't work as well because, well you're using rotational force instead of lateral force. the physics are really cool though
Big fan of the noctua fans for the wind simulation haha!

haha me too im actually thinking about doing this for normal gaming setup to keep me cool

I’ve got a full motion rig with custom built 65nm ffwb, triple 77s, etc. Here’s what I recommend: 1) ya gotta get a clutch and 6 speed shifter with handbrake (a real one, check out Quaiff). Man it is sooooo fun to drive a 5 speed RUF 911 yellow bird or other manual cars. You could get an active gearbox that allows for easy switch to sequential, the tech is newer so it may be more up your alley. An active pedal is better used on a clutch than an accelerator due to bite point and depth. 2) You need to mount a second buttkicker on the wheelbase. There’s micro feedback that the wheelbase can’t give you but the buttkicker can. The flick of a gear change, or the slightest rumble when you go over a texture surface change or brush a curb. 3) you don’t need full motion. I’ve got it, it’s cool, but you don’t need it. A better intermediate step is an active harness system. This one is pretty crazy and doesn’t seem like it will work but it TOTALLY tricks your brain in the breaking zones.
Triple 77’s? What the hell kind of giant car are you driving and you must be so far from the screens. You seems really on it with all this but 77’s is stupidly big and bigger is definitely not better here.
@@Rhythmic_Hammer its to show off mate.
When i went to suzuka i rented a private sim with a crazy motion system and a single really wide screen with a simucube wheel base and honestly the motion is the best ive ever tried it really helps alot with feeling the balance and weight transfer of the car atleast for me it really helped was able to see an improvement of about 3.5 tenths around the suzuka track in the f1 cars which is a decent margin but when you mix the belt tensioner the motion and the heavy force feedback its borderline a workout
Motion rigs are absolutely worth it, and incredibly amplified by VR, just very expensive. My favorite thing that it adds that is not often talked about is a whole new dimension of personality to tracks, with track texture and bumps. I don't even use mine for G-force simulation, I use it exclusively for heave motion and orientation (like tilting in a banked corner). If you get one, make sure to get one with 150mm of stroke. This way the system doesn't run out of stroke if you're getting bumps climbing a hill or in a corner. Also makes driving trophy trucks and rally cars an absolute blast.
Does the movement of the rig affect the VR sensors or does it negate it somehow
@@vm20709 They do get negated, but the game has to support motion rigs for this afaik
If you want a manual gear selector, I’ve heard and seen reviews that the H1SQ H-PATTERN/SEQUENTIAL SHIFTER from Murray motorsports is the best one! You can adjust pressures, change between h pattern and sequential, and it uses an actual shifter linkage
seeing you go from leaving the throttle passive to possibly convinced to get the active throttle makes me really want to try active pedals lol
Road car seats are undefeated for comfort in static sim rigs. I changed from a bucket seat to an MX5 seat on my profile rig, it made such a big difference.
Does it recline? The cheap Dodge seat we have creaks and moves under heavy breaking. Looking to upgrade but we needs sliders and recline to fit different drivers.
@Kevin.L_ yes, it does recline and slide. I used the standard sliders attached to the seat, and tilted the mounting profile it went on, to get it bolted onto the rig. It's absolutely solid, no creaking or movement.
@JayWithAJ Thank you. I'll have to check them out.

Running so many effects through one shaker can start to feel muddy quite quickly. Definitely need more shakers and exciters :)
nice rig! That active pedal seems really cool! I have sort of a similar rig with 4 bass shakers, VR, but no active pedal. I tried the kind of a motion rig you mentioned in the end. I would not bother with it. I found it very distracting, the bass shakers are much better in my opinion. The gear shifts, road texture, curbs feel great on them. My issue with them and simhub is a bit in the latency, it seems that the effects for wheel slip (which I was the most interested in) come in slightly later than I can identify the slip from just visuals, the sounds and the force feedback. What I am interested in as my next upgrade is the seatbelt tensioner, that seems like it could be great to add imersivenes and simulate braking forces and maybe a bit even cornering forces. If there is something that you feel in a real racing car it is the super tight seatbelts :D

I have heard truck sim players say that the extra realism from a motion rig is worth it. I don't think I'll ever do such a thing unless I win the lottery though, but a PSVR2 hooked up to my PC makes such a massive difference in games like BeamNG, ATS/ETS2, MSFS, Elite Dangerous, and so on, that I think a full motion rig would be great for something like space or flying sims but I think the novelty is probably limited for just driving because tilt is not gees even though they're similar.
Also I don't really have room for a dedicated rig at the moment so my combined rig-at-a-desk-that's-attached-to-a-wall is pretty good for me and probably will be for another decade.

@@RevJR I mean i already have a good vr build i was just wondering since when psvr2 was available for pcvr use. I also read that sadly they basically took out all features that make the psvr2 good when you use it on pc. So at that point its just a tethered quest 3
@@OfficialTygo I have a quest 3 and it's definitely a step above it. It's higher apparent resolution, wider field of view I think, clearer lenses for my eyes (though that's gonna be somewhat subjective I think) and so on. Yeah it doesn't have some of the features that PS5 can give it but it is a clear step up from Quest 3 in my opinion. The Quest is better for untethered applications but the PSVR2 is better for graphical fidelity, lower latency (at least it seems that way in Beat Saber), and consistently higher frame rates. The tracking is also marginally better, though that could just be luck I guess.

Get the qubic QS-BT1 belt tensioner
Okay, I have been involved with sim racing for over 26 years, among the first to race online by connecting LAN over IP with a tool back then developed for DOOM. I spend a lot of money on this hobby over those years, always the latest hardware, the newest tech, lost count of hours driven (I'm 62 now). A FFB fan from day one, although the fast guys didn't like it, made being fast more difficult. This is exactly the reason why these days the fast guys don't have a motion rig, it makes things harder. Imagine a track like Sebring, I tell you, my vision is blurred pretty bad going into Sunset 17.
I build my own motion rig years ago, a DIY SFX-100 at a fraction of the cost of ready to use motion rigs (I spend around 2.500 Euro's).
Will it add to the experience? Let me put it like this, go and sit in your car on a parking lot, put your hand on the steering wheel and move it around.....now start making an engine sound.....doing it?
Now, that is how a motionless rig feels for me after 4 years of motion 😂
But in the end it's what you want to achieve, realism or just fun. I see so many guys race sims and making video's talking about realism, while sitting so relaxed they could drink an espresso while driving.....yeh, that's real right....it's looks pretty stupid if you ask me.

I think that for the most accurate feeling, you would want 5 shakers. One for each wheel and one in the back like you have for the engine. This way you will be able to feel the slip or vibration of each tire independently. That said, dope rig!!!
The saddest part is 10 years ago there was incentive for a company to take this and innovate and reduce the price until the average consumer could get something like this for about $200-300 albeit at a much lower quality (same price as an avg. usable VR headset these days) but now it is different companies all trying making different parts and all want 200% margins and the setup is gonna cost 1000+ so only enthusiasts can afford it
What exactly do you mean? "Take this and innovate"?
This isn't really a consumer market. More prosumer than anything. It's not obtainable by the avg person.
@@damianp5888 All this in one cheaper packaging instead of having to buy individual parts
@@jamesnorona1345 That makes sense
DD bases aren’t necessary. TM has base wheel combos that are more than enough for the average user. Used th8a and t3pa pedals and put the rest of the money into quality vr. Rate of return quickly diminishes in sim budgets.
this guy needs to start a damn peripheral company, the amount of time and effort he puts into all of his projects is insane
I just found your channel and i love it. The content is insanely high quality, you dont leave out any info imo. So informative.
Edit: what is the controller you use to controll scrolling and mouse? It looks so usable
1:06 and you know what else is massive?
the price right... right

0:35 how rich do you have to be in order to trash talk such expensive chair lol?
Max verstapens setup cost 35k
@@colacolagaming69 he’s also the #1 F1 driver in the world, so that’s probably not an accurate comparison 😂😂
I have the es1 and I find it cheaply made also. Just a plastic bucket seat. If I would buy again, I would choose a real racing bucket seat costs the same
Expensive doesn’t always mean good

amazing how humbled i feel after watching this video and before it i had my first 2 monitor try on my pc on a racing roblox game and trying to improve by conecting an old kinda functuning tablet to be a wheel and though in my self this is emersive to the point that i played 7 hours till 6am night without thinking to go to sleep even
even thou i cant wit to hop on agine but first getting a proper game
what a great video
It looks absolutely awesome.
I don't get the wind thing though.
Most of the sims you were using were car based. Windows up cars. No wind.
In the case of single seaters, you would, in real life, have a helmet on and while you would feel something, it wouldn't be the wind blowing in your face.
Odd mod.
I have it on my rig , your correct as it does nothing but cool you down
The point is to add more physical feedback to the experience. Cars can have windows down. Obviously you wouldn't race with windows down in a real car for multiple reasons but in a sim it simply adds immersion. A LOT of immersion. There's a reason so many people with very high end sims use them.
As a german i cant watch this video, youtube forced audio robot translation with weird german. Pls disabke this function when uploading its auto activated by google. I dont even have any possibility to change the audio, its horrible
you can change it, i have done it also. Settings -> Audiotrack
@@bunyaminyilmaz3798 you missed the point, there is no such option, thats the reason for my comment. Everyone know you can change the audiotrack in the options, but no option is available, the uploader has such option, its auto clicked by youtube to allow voice translation. As viewer you have no chance to change it on Phone. On Desktop YES i have multiple languages, but on my phone there is none, ZERO. On phone there is " Ambient, quality, speed, subtitels, unifyd audio, debug and statistics, thats all.
A base shaker like the Butt kicker can cause vibrations to your headset (based on my experience with the Quest 3), leading to blurry vision.

The most impressive thing about this whole video is the scanning and 3d printing.

Lol 😂
2:25 bruh just drill some holes wtf is wrong with you
lmfao
I thought the same thing, but on the other hand I could definitely see why someone would be hesitant to just start drilling into a multi thousand dollar rig. Especially if they have the knowledge, equipment, and funds to do it the way he did 🤷
Rich people shit bro
This looks amazing. One thing, I wouldn't stack power supplies. could cause higher than intended temps and cook something. Likely not, but there is increased risk depending on how close to the limit those are.

im so frustrated and angry at life. Im 44 now. im disabled for probably 25 years of my life. im broke. my parent are disabled and seniors who have helped me. i dont know what im going to do. I wish i could afford these things but i can barely afford to live. i wish i could work or have some idea that i could make money from while at home at my own scheculde since being disabled sucks. nobody helps. nobody cares. people pretend to care up until its time to gie money or actually help then they show how much they really dont care. i wish life was different or at least more fair.
That’s sad.
I can help you
@ would be nice for sure
I can attest that adding wind to vr is cool and immersive and all you need is a fan.
And yet, you are entirely stationary. It's not even close to "real life".
the editing is so crisp. good work :)
This is as nice as any arcade racing game I've seen, if not better! Nice job.
A Full Motion rig is a Complete game changer. I Got mine about half a year ago and it is insane.
