Depression is very very real & only those who suffer from it's dibilatating & at times desperate ways, will & can understand. In most (but not all) cases in comes on through no fault of the sufferer. For those who have never suffered with it or any form of it, you're extremely fortunate not to have...it's very very real & a killer for some who arent strong enough. Please support anyone you think could be suffering. Take care Dave & all.
Thanks for being upfront and honest. Alcohol is a major issue I feel for you. You have everything to live for not the least your young son. You mean the world to him. Keep your chin up mate, You are allowed to feel down from time to time.
Someone once told me that if you suffer from depression in your home country, moving abroad won’t cure it, you’ll still carry it with you. At the time, I didn’t believe them, but after relocating to Thailand, I realised they were right. and although the lifestyle here allows me to distract myself and take my mind off it. I'm still dealing with it. That being said, whether relocating helps or worsens things all depends on how well you adapt and how things unfold for you. If you’re unlucky and things don’t go as planned, it can often make things worse. There’s nothing quite as disheartening as traveling thousands of miles to a beautiful country, only to feel like you’re still failing at life, especially in a place like Thailand, where so many people seem to be living the dream. the only thing that I find helps, is not being so hard on myself and counting my Blessings.
I stopped drinking alcohol. That fixed my depression....its simple. It's not rocket science. Alcohol is a depressant. And a bad one at that. No matter how deeply depressed or suicidal a heavy drink or alcoholic is, they will never quit drinking unless they hit absolute rock bottom. Or die. Or see the light.
I enjoy your videos because I appreciate your honesty, and can relate to some of the frustration you express from living here. The only thing I dislike are some of these commenters - really toxic folks.
Great video-honest and straight to the point. You tell it like it is, and that's exactly why I enjoy your channel! Cant wait to meet up with you and John Paul in mid December
Sorry another comment about the weather but it's really important I think. Europeans evolved to live in cold climates which have seasons that come full circle every year. We thrive through the adversity of the winter and then rebirth in the spring where we can release our pent up energy and prepare for the coming winter. If you live in a place like Bangkok with no seasons you're taking us out our natural habitat and this alone can have all sorts of negative impacts on your health. Never mind the fact we're living along side people who have none of us this in them and can never understand us on a fundamental level.
I find the best thing about Thailand, compares to England, is the human connection. As a single man, being in Hua Hin, for a few weeks, I've got to know people virtually everywhere here. Some ex pats but mainly Thai people. Plus I have a few interests and don't drink anymore. Compared to the UK where I shut the door and don't see a soul. Funny enough part of the reason I stopped drinking was I wanted to enjoy life and know what's going on, more so in another country.
Well done for being so open on this topic. I’m ‘happier’ here than I’ve ever been .. yes I have the odd low days for sure , & you certainly cannot choose where to have your moods or when the ‘man sits on your shoulder’ 🙏👊.. the weather , and ‘nice views’ here in bkk certainly helps 😊 keep going ! Thank you for sharing your experiences on how to deal with depression. Keeping busy, doesn't matter what, just doing things, having a routine makes you feel better. And once a month when the pension comes into the account gives a little kick of happiness. Also reducing alcohol intake is important, I now only drink beer in moderate amounts, stopped with whiskey and drinks in the bars. One beer a day you feel good on and avoid hangovers.
Yes when I go back to the uk in the winter months I get very depressed . But now I live in spain lots of sunshine . So thailand to spain is the best of 2 countrys
Great video, as all of your videos are. I've been to Thailand and several other countries in Asia and absolutely loved it. The Philippines was awesome also. In Thailand, I reached a zen state. Each time I went to Thailand, I would get into more and more of what I would call a zen state. First time I was there, I traveled around and saw all the sights, went to Cambodia and Laos, and enjoyed the nightlife. And then each subsequent time I was there, while still seeing the sights and enjoying the nightlife, I got into this zen-like groove. I had this zen wherever I went (Phuket, Chiang Mai, etc), but with each subsequent visit, I spent more and more time in Bangkok. Each person is different, so I'm not trying to oversell my groove as the end all/be all zen that I found it to be. Everyone has different tastes and they can find out what works best for them. But, for me, I had my routine which involved eating the awesome food they have there, working out in the gym, doing my writing (which I would love write my "Great American Novel" if I lived there), and seeing up to three different women per day. I know what it sounds like...but I'm not that kind of man. If anything, I'm shy and one of the so-called nice guys. But I felt like, in Thailand, nice guys don't finish last (and that relies on a nice guy having money to spend of course). I get it: it all costs money. Nothing comes for free. Everything is a business transaction. As long as you don't fool yourself and think you're falling in love, then I found that I was totally in my natural environment, totally in my comfort zone. Working out, eating delicious food, being intimate with beautiful women, and flexing my creativity through writing... the sheer zen of it all. Epic. It was a simple groove, but through that simplicity, I achieved a zen state. I could see the physical improvements in my body. I felt better about myself. I became more confident, more at ease, more at peace. That is what I mean by my "zen" state. I can only imagine what I could achieve if I lived there or even just had a six-month stay there. I would become a new man. Sorry for the long post. Meant to keep this comment short. But Thailand was absolutely amazing. Doing my groove and dialing in the zen state against the backdrop of beautiful weather every day (like you, I hate cold weather) and the excitement that Bangkok offers with its gleaming skyscrapers and massive malls and vitality of busy streets...just absolutely the best. I still went to see some sights...Muy Thai kickboxing of which I got to see the "Super Bowl" of Muy Thai in the form of the championship at Rajadamnern Stadium...or going to Wang Saen Suk Hell Garden (check that out sometime...it will spin your lid back). The only drawback for me was that I missed everyone back home in America. You can't have it all but, in Thailand, you can come close.
So I have had depression my whole life, a really dysfunctional childhood I often thought was the cause of it, tried Prozac once and it made things worse, so I have just tried to live right, and then I had my DNA tested, and boom!, I got my answer. I had two gentic abnormalities, one is a gene (MTHFR) that had abnormal copies from both parents. That means my neurotransmitters function at about 30% of the normal rate they should. I can't do much about it but it is nice to have a (partial) root cause
I usually spend an hour learning Thai and have done for years( now Fluent) ,an hour at the gym or walking the beach , an hour with the opposite sex , an hour watching something kind of educational , an hour online planning my life /researching things/finances , usually an hour out on my Motorbike for a coffee , a fews hours relaxing with a few beers somewhere in town and an hour cooking . 15 years here now and still trying to get better at LIFE. But it sure beats working .
Thailand isn't a paradise compared to Europe it's just different. You're missing all sorts of essential ingredients of life which you take for granted and this can easily make you depressed. Btw, the weather in Bangkok is maybe the worst in the entire country. It's not cold but it's bad for other reasons and that affects your health too. Living your life in malls and AC controlled buildings has unintended consequences that compile over time and make you depressed too in my opinion.

You're extremely fortunate to not have suffered with 'real' depression...though to say you think it's boredom in others, only says you're a misunderstanding individual. It's REAL, very very real & in most cases through no fault of the sufferer.

I'm 44, I honestly don't believe depression is real. When i hear people say they are depressed I don't know how they feel but from where i'm sitting it looks more like boredom or monotonous routine.
🤦♂️
Possibly. However Depression is different.Unfortunately It's a real mental illness.
I suffered with it for years from my late teens to early forties and it was very real
Your disbelief only proves that you lack understanding.
You're extremely fortunate to not have suffered with 'real' depression...though to say you think it's boredom in others, only says you're a misunderstanding individual.
It's REAL, very very real & in most cases through no fault of the sufferer.
