Surprising Realism in The Dragon Prince...

  • This is a great fantasy series that I've been watching recently, and there are some unexpectedly realistic depictions of arms and armor in it. As well as some more outlandish designs, of course. :)
    So I felt like pointing out some of the things I noticed and commenting on them. Also, if you haven't seen it yet I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Very well written, and the characters are interesting. I appreciate the depth, especially of the main antagonist (don't even want to call him a villain, really).

      considering the history of the world is not that long , i see humans more like an uplifted species , thats the reason for the strange weapons setup ...

I can't remember if it's in season 2 or 3 but King Harrow makes a speech about history that I think really should be the preface to all history classes taught. Like. War, battles, glory, that's all cool... But the real lessons one should learn from history is to how to be better as a person by learning from the mistakes of those who came before. And that not all history is war, suffering and bloodshed.

    It isn't explained, but I think the Dual-Blade-Bow is more of a magical catalyst than a "real" bow,as the bow strings and the arrows they shot are made of "pure" moon magic. So I guess the blade didn't need to flex at all, as no force is applied to it, when the elf draws the bow. I don't know why the catalyst is bow shaped though. Maybe to have a better aim? Or maybe it's just a design decision, as elves in fantasy almost always are the bedt archers around and they wanted to stick with this trope.

    Great of you to check this series out. It's been a breath of fresh air for me in terms of fantasy shows.
    Aside from the designs, I was hoping you'd point out the practicality in some of the more realistic fight scenes. Rayla vs General Amaya for one stands out. The whole notion of not needing any armor because elf (flexible and agile) was tossed out the window in the face of someone who not only uses armor but also her shield effectively (a thing most shows RARELY showcase) and is not held back by the common misconceptions that wearing armor slows one down.

    dude, where did you get that shirt? that is soooo cool.
    actually the transforming weapons DO make sense in context. Moon magic is all about illusions and transformations. They aren't like Swiss Army knives: the weapons have enchantments on them that cause them to transform on command.

    • @boosterh1113
      @boosterh1113 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'd buy that as a concept, but the weapons don't ever seem to magically reshape or shift that we can see. Rayla's knives fold and unfold completely mechanically (like real balisongs), and they have those segmented, two-piece blades which suggest that they are supposed to Transformer-shift themselves into their new configuration, but like Skall showed, instead the animators just do a hard switch on the models with no transition.
      As well, the sword-bow that Skall also showed has projections on the bottom of the handles that certainly suggest some kind of latch or locking mechanism. When the the elf is holding it in bow configuration at 9:38, the hilts don't look like they've melded or grown together, they look locked in place.
      If the art-department of the show is trying to convey that the Moon Elves have magically reshaping weapons, they are doing a really poor job of it. I think it is more likely that some early concept artist had a cool idea for Rayla's weapons that could be reshaped Transformer style (with magic handwaving how the parts move when it shifts and then stay in place after), but later in production, no-one could find a good looking way to actually animate the transformation. By that point either there was not enough time/money to redesign her weapons and reanimate all the scenes she used them in, or they couldn't come up with a transformable design that looked near as good, so they just decided to keep the old designs and ignore the whole "how does it work" question. A little bit of verisimilitude sacrificed either to production practicalities or for a more attractive design. Trade-offs of showmaking.

    Good realism in show also includes when Viren told Soren to kill the princes, Soren’s pupils dilated. Your pupils dilate when adrenaline is shot through your body. I didn’t even know that until it was pointed out. They also do great research into ASL. People are really are trying to learn to translate it. This is awesome.

      @@NetAndyCz The biggest offender was the overly literal "shield wall" with no means to attack, which was a tactic by supposedly experienced sunfire elf soldiers, so there's really no excuse. I could also rant on multiple levels about various aspects of "Hollywood archery" at display, or how it suddenly barely took a minute to run up and down the mountain spire, and more, but that was by far the worst as they actively focused on it. In short, it very much feels like they had watched the movie version of the Battle of Five Armies in The Hobbit and inanely decided "Yeah, that looks totes great."

    Or to give you protection while using a crossbow.
    Just stab the bottom into the ground, kneel behind the shield and aim through the slot.
