- I've seen a lot of fantasy designs in movies and videos games that would be very ineffective in real life (at least if used by regular humans). But this one takes the cake, as the user is not usually endangered on such an epic level.
So I couldn't resist over-analyzing it for its practical functionality... or lack thereof. No disrespect to the artist intended, it's just for fun and entertainment. :)

Skall this isn't my first time seeing a sword flail hybrid. In 3rd edition dungeons and dragons there's an often forgotten exotic double weapon known as the gyrspike. It is the combination of a longsword and a flail.

To be fair, if someone came at me swinging that thing while holding the blade and shouting "fear me!"......I'd actually be pretty damn terrified.

Theory: The purpose of the weapon is to stash it with your enemy's weapons, hoping they'll accidentally pick it and injure themselves trying to use it.

@Ties de Jong Except for the fact that decorative weapons are still fundamentally weapons, and are supposed to have an esthetically pleasing design that resembles what they are supposed to be. This is just a pretty dumb fantasy sword (?) which is fine if you don't care too much about actual practicality.

It has one practical use:
When you unscrew the pommel and throw it to end them rightly, it can entangle the opponent like a bola.
Just carry a bola
You don't need to entangle the opponent if he's already been ended rightly.

It's clearly a Berserker Sword: The flail whips the user into a maddening frenzy while battling the enemy. It should be used by trolls or 9-foot tall anime men.

You can rip off the ball and chain from the pommel and trow it, then after that you can unscrew the pommel and throw it too.
Almost as effective as throwing two pommels

Same principle can be used with opponents using 7.62×25mm (Tokarev, CZ-52, C96 'Broomhandle' Mauser): somehow get a round of 9×19mm Parabellum into their weapon and (also somehow) get an to... I won't say "fire", but pull the trigger. This causes a small explosion, & unless they were wearing fairly heavy armor, should at least create an exploitable opening. Granted... this is almost as impractical as this stupid ass sword-like-object, lol

I've seen some russian combat knifes with one or four pistol barrels in the hilt.

Or if you was a skeleton(fantasy) or had cyborg hands(scifi), you wouldnt be stabbed by the spikes. Also you could tie it to your wrist when you wanted to use it as a sword without being hit by the ball and when you wanted to use it as a morning star you could just hold the blade since it wouldnt cut you anyway.

this is honestly some of the best theory crafting i have ever seen. bravo, good sir!
Couple thoughts from someone with no real HEMA experience:
1) The spiked guard could be interesting in a Fantasy setting for a "Ritualistic Duelling" weapon...the spikes force the combatants to duel using specific forms, and reward someone for very forceful strikes/parries. Especially interesting if a duel is settled by "first blood". Or if the spikes are poisoned...
2) The Pommel Flail. Could the sword be used in the right hand while the ball is held in the left to prevent self-injury? This would also keep the ball fully controlled for when a flail strike is warranted.
God, I shivered so much when he started using the actual sword as a flail. I know nothing would happen but the sword! The poor beautiful sword! Which I want! And will never get!

Even then, I feel that because you're not holding the sword, the sword would just cut and bounce immediately. Now, it would still be painful, but it wouldn't cut as deep as if the user was holding it and push the blade further on hit.

Okay meme weapons don't count for impractical because in not case using a squid as a sword is a bit more impractical

Since I've gotten likes I want to also mention that this was from Soul Calibur 4 or 5 and I want to say it was a nightmare ( Siegfried was a surfboard)

Use it like a Dao with the cloth attached to the handle's end, holding the cloth with the other hand (in this case, chain). Flail the chain end on defense

The "Flail in place of the pommel" was thought of before. When making 'exotic weapons' for some edition of D&D or another, some poor schmuck designed something like that and they called it the 'Gyrspike". This just feels like taking that and making the sword hardcore, too.
When he showed the image of it revealing the flail pommel, I just about created a black hole from the near-infinite density of cringe I felt.

And yes,that weapon was already very impractical to begin with
The only person I can imagine using this sword is some giant immortal skeleton warrior who is immune to all forms of damage, including his own sword so taking friendly fire damage would not be a problem to focus on maximum damage and more importantly intimidation
Actually i have found that a small flail in the off hand is extremely effective at opening up an opponent for a strike. But almost 100% of the time you DROP the flail if you manage a proper strike or bind your opponents weapon so that you can get a better grip with both hands for your finishing stroke. It just feels so natural to drop it and then attack rather than actually using it as a blunt weapon.

Seeing that illustration got me thinking about some lore behind this "weapon":
Legend has it that the Cursed Blade of Deimos was designed and wielded by the Dread Lord Sados Masochisus as the ultimate weapon, at least in his twisted mind (and possibly to satisfy the whims of, and as tribute towards, some foul malevolent demon whom inhabited and corrupted his mind). It is said that only a chosen few (if any) could successfully harness its malevolent power without succumbing to its curse, of which many unworthy souls have fallen victim to. Alas, poor Masochisus was the 1st among these unworthy souls.
Another legend has it that Sir Pragmaticus the Clever stumbled upon this cursed weapon lying in some desperate peddler's possession, and sensed its cursed power. However, instead of turning it down like so many before him, he purchased the dreaded blade off of the poor peddler's hands as a gift to use in a duel against his rival, Sir Boasterius the Foolish, defeating him by tricking him into accepting this weapon as a gift, and daring him to best him in one-on-one combat using the weapon (which, of course, lead to Sir Boasterius's unfortunate demise). Afterwards, when Sir Pragmaticus's personal executioner lost his old executioner's sword, the clever Pragmaticus came up with a new way of executing his prisoners and condemned criminals: by forcing them to attempt to use the cursed blade to defeat his/her opponent in a fight to the death.
By the way, and this is a quick, but serious question: Could you possibly throw such a cursed weapon without hurting yourself in the process?
ShadowWolfTJC welp , there are some weapons that are intended to hurt whoever holds it because it would prove the person holding it is strong enough to do that despite hurting themselves in the process , while it does sound stupid is mostly to prevent any retard of holding such dangerous weapon in first place , ouryken in digimon per example literally kills you if you aren't strong enough to even hold the power within the blade

Maybe it was meant to be stupid, you don't know! There are legitimate uses for really dumb weapon designs in fiction, such as for comedy or to show how impressively stupid and reckless a character is.

Now I want a show or comic where the legendary sword is literally unweildable by anyone who isn’t immortal.
