BIll Russell is the greatest basketball player who played from 1956-69 and played for the Boston Celtics throughout his career. Many people call him overrated because of his offense and his hall of fame teammates. He wasn’t a bad offensive player at all, here’s why. Bill’s low field goal percentage was low because his shots were highly contested, the game was still developing, and the game was very physical and bruising back then since the rules were different. Bill’s scoring was low because his team ran many plays that usually involved him as a screen setter and his coach wanted him as the third scoring option. Other than that he was a great inside finisher, he had guard like handles, he was very athletic, he had a nice hook shot, he was a great passer, and he grabbed many offensive rebounds. He simply was a great systematic offensive player. Bill Russell’s defense is called the best for many reasons. He invented help defense and Bill Russell was an amazing shot blocker. Most of the time, players were so intimidated by Russell’s inside defensive presence that they would sometimes miss their shots close to the basket because they thought that Russell would block them. Bill knew basically everyone’s hot spot on the court and he’d try to force them an uncomfortable shot. Bill also knew everyone’s weaknesses and would use their weakness as his advantage. If he couldn’t shut down the team’s superstar, he’d shut down everyone else. That’s why BIll is the greatest basketball defensive player. The thing that separated Bill Russell and other players was his mindset and his heart. You know that feeling when you're so confident and you feel like you could do anything, well Bill Russell always brought that to his game. I know this because all of his great games came from the playoffs, he pushed all of his teammates farther than they thought they could go, and all of his stats improved greatly in the playoffs. Also Bill was the greatest on and off court leader too. He got his team hyped up to win. Another example of how dedicated he was to winning was that he accepted the role as both coach and player on his team at the end of his career. He wrote the books for defense and showed that longevity, teamwork, hard work, strategy, mentality, confidence and high I.Q. are more important than talent and skill. Some very hard core true facts are Bill’s team never won a championship before he entered the league. He was the first black N.B.A superstar and after that many African Americans joined the game. He was a track athlete star which proves that he was very athletic. He never lost a playoff game 7. His greatest game was in the playoffs finals game 7 when he scored 30, grabbed 40 rebounds, and had many blocks (blocks weren’t officially a stat back then). His second best game was also in the playoffs finals game 7 when he dropped 22 points, grabbed 35 rebounds, and had many blocks. Bill was voted as the greatest basketball player of all time in 1980. Many old school fans said that Bill Russell was the greatest player and many former players said that Bill was the best player they played against or with. That’s why he’s the true G.O.A.T (greatest player of all time) of the nba because of all of these facts, his 11 championships which is the most by any professional sports player, and the things he did for African American rights .
Bill Russell was incredible! A great player and a great person. How could any one ever say he was overrated? That's crazy. 11 rings in 13 seasons. Probably would be the all time blocked shots leader, but they didn't keep records of blocked shots until 1973, 4 years after he retired. The ultimate team player, totally unselfish, all about winning, substance, not flash, humanitarian. All class. We all could learn great lessons of life from this great man.
Jerry West made the most accurate statement I've ever heard about Bill Russel, back in 1969. When Wilt Chamberlain went to the Lakers, he joined West and Elgin Baylor. 3 of the greatest superstars of the era. Everyone would say Wow, they got Baylor, West, and Chamberlain on the same team! Invincible......Until they played Russell and the Celtics. In the '68-'69 championship series, the Celtics were down 3 games to 1. They became the 1st team in NBA History to overcome a 3-1 deficit and beat the Lakers 4 games to 3. After the game, Jerry West was in deep thought about what had just happened. When asked his thoughts about what had transpired, he calmly said "You can talk about all the greatest players, scorers, whatever. "But when it comes to winning, there is no one like him". Nobody. If you had to win, and could have just one player, he'd be the guy. 11 championships in 13 years........This may not be the exact quote, but the Quote about "when it comes to winning, there is no one like him" is exactly what West said. That is Bill Russell..........
Greatest winner and defender. That's not too shabby! My favorite player of all time, right here! All of the things that he had to deal with, on top of winning, is just unbelievable. A Truly magnificent man.
Nobody can just appreciate all he did for the game of basketball they have to compare him to somebody or say he couldn't do certain things. THE MAN THREW UP BEFORE GAMES THATS HOW BAD HE WANTED TO WIN! Then was a player/coach and won 2 titles what else does he have to prove.
Arvydas Sabonis was the complete point center. Can pass, can bang, can rebound, can defend, can shoot 3s, and did I mention that he can pass. But Bill was far more cerebral.
Russell would still dominate because he knows what he can do, has a killer instinct that isn't just limited to scoring, a leader of men on and off the court, and has a really phenomenal basketball IQ, Legendary players do all they can to adjust to the game as the game has changed. Bill Russell can easily fine tune his game to adjust to any era.
from 1959 to 1963 bill Russell averaged 20.2 PPG with 26.6 rebounds and 4.4 assist (50 playoff/finals games) 5 straight titles 3 straight mvps easily the most dominant playoff/finals streak in nba history
Yes, beyond any doubt. Bill Russell is the greatest of all time. 11 championship rings. Unequalled intelligence regarding what was necessary to win. Bill adjusted his game, every day, to apply his immense skills to do what was necessary to win. If defense was paramount, Bill focused on defense. If he needed to score, he would score - running the court better than any other center and dunking over anyone. If assists were needed, he would pass to Sam Jones, or KC, or John H, or Larry Siegfried, or Satch, or to Cousy (in the early days). No NBA, or other professional sports franchise player, has come near to matching Bill Russell’s achievements.
