  • A few weeks ago we collected our new 2022 Tesla Model Y after trading in our 2019 Tesla Model 3P. It's my first week driving it, we've added a few upgrades, but after one week, it's been an absolute joy to drive and live with.

    My wife needs to see this! She complained about the Model 3 P that we rented for a quick weekend getaway with some kids. She said it was a harsh ride and didn't like it. I've got a LR Model Y coming end of Oct - early Dec and she thinks she won't like it.This is GREAT intelligence here! Doesn't hurt that it's narrated in a cool British accent 🙂

    Was driving down a country road earlier this morning from Kirby Muxloe to Ratby and had to activate my ventilation system in the niro as it literally fogged up in under 5 seconds (had it before many times over the years) anyway I found that like the new niro which has I believe touch controls for the heating like your Y I might have had a serious accident but due to the older model having all physical knobs and buttons easily identifiable by touch disaster was avoided. Personally some critical items in vehicles should Always be physical! Cheers and good luck with your Y guys

    Kate, Thanks for the nice review of your Model Y. I am so glad to see you get yours. I know you and James were not thrilled with your M3P, and you probably missed your Model S, with its large hatchback and boot. I recently bought a Model Y and sold my Model S. I really loved my Model S, but the new Y has better specs (60 mile more range, larger rear seat and cargo space, faster MCU processor, etc.), and a new 8 year powertrain warranty. I was surprised to find that I like my Y just as much as the S, and maybe even more. I hope that you will feel the same after owning your Y for a bit.

    Nice car James & Kate! I have a M3 but we are retired with a small dog. It's great for our needs and is super efficient. I have sat in a MY and the seating position is more upright and comfortable to get in and out of the car. The thing I didn't expect is how heavy the doors feel when opening and closing them...

    Great review. Just a couple of things. Is Florence able to see out of her rear side window OK? I want to ensure our kids can see out so that they are not immediately bored 😂. Also, I'm assuming that, despite the firm ride, you think the passengers are comfortable? It has been the biggest worry about buying one over the BMW IX3.

    • @Jamesandkate
      @Jamesandkate  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Have to agree with earlier comment regarding the auto windscreen wipers setting. It is farcical and not fit for purpose in my M3LR (2022). Just to note that you are comparing the 2022 model Y with an earlier version of model 3, and the following applies if compare with a 2022 model 3. (I had a lease 2020 model 3 and now own a 2022 model 3)
    The suspension has been updated on both models, and the model 3 is also much more compliant like the model Y. I believe that the model 3 2022 is still slightly more compliant than the model Y of the same year.
    There are updates to the seats, and outside the sitting position which is of course higher in the model Y, the seats are more comfortable in the newer versions
    The interior is a much better quality/build in the 2022, my original model 3 was form Fremont , and was OK, but now the chinese model 3 is so much better. The improved interior in the 3/Y is a function of the chinese/2022 build quality. In general the Chinese build is much better than the American build. The right hand drive model Y is not yet sourced from Germany.
    The efficiency figures you quote (about the same for the model Y to your last 3) are not comparable. The later models have a slightly bigger battery and are significantly more efficient in both the 3/Y. My model 3 went from a range of 319 to 380 miles - and is certainly showing a 0.5 miles/kWh improvement in efficiency compared with my last version. So slightly bigger battery and better drive train/ heat pump.

    MY is 2.8 inches wider than the M3, but it doesn't seem that wide when driving. A bit of an illusion from inside as the interior width is the same in the M3 and MY, so that extra body width is due to the wider track and fatter tyres. Use those cameras for parking!

      @lawrencewittenbergii4309 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Depends on what year MS vs which new M3. New M3 RWD should have the million mile LFP battery pack. MS probably won't have the heat pump/Octovalve combo. M3 may have the fancy headlights, more comfortable seats (early MS seats sucked), much better computer and laminated front door glass (quieter + more secure).
      Tesla is constantly innovating and upgrading. I heard on one podcast (forget which one) that the M3 has had about 30 design changes to its suspension since it was introduced.
      Fortunately we live in an age where one can gather information from Reddit and TH-cam, do non-pressure test drives at Carmax and such plus listen to tons of podcasts.
      You'll probably be happy with either of your choices.

    Like you - we came from a 3 (serviced by James!) to a Y and agree with all of your observations. The weakest part of the whole thing for me is the screen. • @wolfgangpreier9160
      @wolfgangpreier9160 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The UI is better than every other car on the road.
      You are invited to take a job @ Tesla and make them a better UI.
      I guess you will have to relocate to the US.
      Wipers work just fine, Auto headlights not.
      Also not speed signs and braking before the speed limits. When it even detects them.
      Yes, Teslas are not perfect. There is one minor advantage to everyone else. They get better with every update. My Skoda Enyaq has not received any update since i got it. My Teslas get a update at least twice a month. My Fiat 500E will never be able to use FSD Beta. My Tesla do if i invest the money. Yes i have more EVs in my company. I am a electrician after all, have to proof to my customers that i don't sell them trash.

      @@wolfgangpreier9160 Totally disagree. In my driving position, on a right hand drive car, I cannot see any of the icons on the right hand side below the speed limit. This includes the low tyre pressure warning. Tesla seem to think it’s more important for us to see vague images of other vehicles, cones and dancing traffic lights - I have windows for that. The argument “it’s showing you want the car can see” makes no sense - I don’t need to know what the car can see. I’d rather use that space to show stuff relevant to me as a driver. Tesla need to spend time looking at this - not fart noises and boom box gimmicks.

      We recently tried a new M3 (in December) and MY yesterday. The ride has been improved on both. I also drove a 2021 M3 LR yesterday and thought was firmer and more crashy. Whilst I didn't drive the new M3 and MY back to back, I think the latest M3 has the best ride and feels better to drive. Not a big difference, and on a journey the MY would probably be more comfortable due to the seating position. The MY doesn't feel much bigger when driving though it's 2.8 inches wider, and has much better interior space. I can't decide which to go for. Btw the latest LFPs are incredibly efficient.

    Nice Model Y guys! Was wondering if you guys are considering the performance upgrade from Tesla or are you happy enough with the long range performance? Cheers

    Tesla's not for me, can't cope with screen only functions. Love that frunk light though, cool. Nice to see you and Florence again Kate, good review.👍

      Most functions - controls can be voice activated.

      @@farmerfarmerer3847 yes I know but I suffer with ME/CFS. Part of that condition is that I have a problem finding words. So I may know that I want the windscreen wipers on but may not remember what they're called for example.
      We recently acquired a secondhand ev with voice control, there was lane keep assist working automatically but it was over zealous on the road I was travelling. I didn't know where the off button was but I also didn't know what it was called at the time, could just see the symbol changing colour as it tried to put me in a hedge! I tried calling it all sorts of names, (some unrepeatable!) but it wasn't having it. I eventually found the button on a panel on the dash which was obscured by my hand when it was on the steering wheel.
      Voice control sounds great but you have to be fully cognisant of the correct phrases to use and be able to draw the words to mind immediately. Probably doesn't respond to mad gestures or colourful descriptions of what I want it to do, I imagine!

    I saw one in the flesh today, that is one ugly car. I don't get the Tesla obsession they are all looking so dated compared to all the new ones coming out. But that's the great thing about freedom of choice i guess, if it pushes your buttons fair enough, enjoy it.
