Harold Davidson was born in 1875, the son of the local vicar. After a brief and faltering attempt at a theatrical career, he eventually followed his father into the church, becoming the Rector of Stiffkey, Norfolk in 1906.
Despite the failure of his theatrical ambitions, his fascination with the stage continued for the rest of his life. He married an Irish actress, Molly Saurin, and became chaplain to the Actors’ Church Union. In 1908 he even part-funded a musical production entitled Dorothy (produced by Arthur Maundy Gregory), but with disastrous financial consequences.
He had a predilection for helping young women, including dancing girls and prostitutes, whom he believed to be in moral danger. Rumours surrounding his sometimes ambivalent relationships with these girls dogged him for most of his life in the church, and in 1932, after alleged dalliances with a young prostitute, he was charged with immorality under the Clergy Discipline Act. He was found guilty and eventually defrocked.

I'd say your assessment of the Rev. Davidson is spot on. He was an actor trying to be a clergyman. And thanks for sharing that vintage girlie photo! I love vintage photography, too. I have one set showing how rough life in Appalachian coal camps could get. They show a classic "dude" with black suit, goatee and mustache propped up on a bench with three men posing next to him. He was shot outside a dance hall, and the men were the coroner's inquest jury.
My grandfather was one of those Appalachian coal miners :) Cool find, Spider Seven!

Yes! More English eccentrics! I love it. That was really fun and the music in the background is pretty great. I actually love vintage photos as well. I recently found a bunch of old family portraits which I do love because I like to make up stories about who they were as well. But I also found in that pictures from a car garage that my great-great grandfather worked in and also his baseball team. It's just so cool.

I think the reverend had basically a kind heart, but was driven by his desires and certainly not suited to be a man of the cloth.
I wonder if his original intentions were true and pure and then he lost himself in the unpure. Just a thought.

As always a fascinating story, thank you. Your mention of creating a story to a found antique photograph sounded familiar but took a time to recall. The Author Ransom Riggs said he created the Miss Peregrines home for peculiar children series based off assorted odd and fascinating old photographs he'd found in collections over many years.

Even though the padre wasn't the nicest guy I greatly admire that she tried to save him at that young age !
