The live version is from their final world tour. It's great more rock with a haunting intro and a very vibrant rocky outro.Worth seen and fans love this, one of the good live moments of the band.

Keep up with the ABBA reactions please. They have sooo many great songs. I'd suggest "Lay all your love on me" (my fav) also, dis you know they released new songs in 2021? 40 whole years after last time they recorded together and they are awesome " I still have faith in you" and "Don't shut me down"

So nice to see you again with another reaction to ABBA songs
    "Summer night city" (1978)
was composed to pay homage to its capital city Stockholm (in Sweden)
hence are the images of this and all the official ABBA videos
(only exception: "Chiquitita" in the Alpine area of Switzerland)
I think this video was shot in 'real time'
I mean, the ABBA members went to a disco night, including the next sunrise
(the couple of the brunette Frida & Benny were the most nocturnal and energetic,
in contrast to the more familiar of blonde Agnetha & Björn)
the musical rhythm is influenced by the success of BEE GEES
with the soundtrack of the film "Saturday Night Fever"
Unfortunately they did not include it in the compilation album "ABBA Gold" (1992)
and its composers Björn & Benny were never satisfied with the final arrangement,
they had other options, live they did it with a slow intro and a vibrant ending
you should do a reaction to the live perfomance at Wembley 1979
    th-cam.com/video/dlkT3hNO2Lg/w-d-xo.html
it was their last #1 in Sweden
(until the current comeback in 2021 with "Don't shut me down")
and #5 in England, among other charts
ABBA was a very versatile group, although its essence and musical identity is Europop,
that year they experimented with disco sound with this song and their next album "Voulez Vous"
I hope to see you soon with more ABBA songs
    My best regards from
    Buenos Aires Argentina 🇦🇷
    South America

A lovely, light summery vibe type of song, have always loved it. Memories of bright, warm summer nights out dancing in Stockholm comes to life, nostalgic, although the town for sure still looks like in the video (at least in these parts). ABBA descbribe the vibe and feeling of this perfectly, being out until the early hours of the morning, feeling alive and free. 💞

@@RattyReacts:) We all have our different perspectives and tastes, that is for sure. I'd like to give you the tip to give this but also other ABBA-songs a few listens, most have a tendency to develop and grow on you with time (the same can probably be said on a lot of music). I have heard others say it and also felt that way myself (with ABBA). Sometimes you change your opinion in a way you never would have thought from the first listen. With that being said, I appreciate your honest reaction and exploration of ABBA. You're great, keep em' coming! Greetings from (a summer night in) Sthlm and Sweden. :)

Dynamos were used for example to produce electricity for the lamp in your bike, and here meaning the energy, I think. These kinds of lyrical choices are more familiar for people who lived at the time. I think that even though the video was filmed in Stockholm, a very beautiful northern city, it could mean any city for people in any country.
I`ve always loved this song, one of my favorite songs, but the Abba guys were never happy with the way it turned out.

@@RattyReacts the live version from the 1979/80 concerts is far superior to the studio version which B&B were never happy with but released as there was nothing else ready at the time they needed a new single. The 79 live version gives the song a huge power and a much deeper, rockier, sound and was the first time fans heard the slow intro, which was cut from the single release and not issued commercially until the 1994 box set as a rareity.

    Superb dance song.
Music is a mood and this is a vibe if you are out or on your way out for a night on the tiles.
Anyone who doesn't like it, almost certainly isn't a clubber.
I love all the ABBA disco stuff but then I also like the pop, soft and prog rock elements in their songs.
If I want something more introspective and rock I will listen to Pink Floyd instead and if want something heavy I will play Zep.
Each to their own but virtually every song I hear these days is actually boring as they use the same techniques, synth, autotune, etc etc.

I agree with you on this one - not one of their best. ABBA really tried to get into the huge "disco" trend but in my opinion they never fully pulled it off - their own sound is distinctive enough and they didn't need to emulate what was going on in the rest of the music world at the time. As another commenter said, this is reminiscent of the Bee Gees in their Saturday Night Fever phase.
The Swedes have such a lot of hours of darkness in winter, so they really do make the most of their long summer nights (24 hour daylight in the far north) - this video truly captures the feel of a summer night in Stockholm.

ABBA music is typically the blueprint for seamless and effective layering. Subtle, nuanced, even angelic at times…..but this song is simply DENSE. It’s a wall of sound that hits you in the face like a brick. The boys were never happy with the final mix…..unhappy to the point where they scrapped it from the Voulez Vous album and ended up throwing it onto a Greatest Hits collection as a stop-gap release to keep the demanding public happy with merchandise to consume. Seems obviously inspired by the BeeGees right down to the falsetto vocals and slinky bass line. While not in my top 5, I do enjoy this song especially the overall feel of propulsion I get from it. It’s like a big dog shoving its wet nose into your crotch preventing you from standing still or engaging into any extended train of thought.

  • @The_Jupiter2_Mission
    @The_Jupiter2_Mission ปีที่แล้ว +1

They had a lot of difficulty with the mixing of the track. They were never satisfied with it in the end. This was their sort of disco/dance track hybrid contribution to the era of disco at the time of recording.
People mistakenly think they are a disco band but they were not. They just happened to span that particular small window era.
The live version is not better. Abba were essentially a studio band.
Their tracks are very layered both musically and vocally that mostly cannot be reproduced live.
The live is a different sound, but that doesn't make it better.

No you should not waste your time. The song is basically the same. Just a different choral opening......... If it was boring now. It will be boring again........ I personally think this was one of ABBA's least boring songs......... It is about "nightlife"...... in any city........ Not a specific one........ Although being Swedish.......... Stockholm is the backdrop of many of their videos......... Even the not boring ones.
