I'm glad that you touched on the sadness of the real Salem witch trials. As someone who has performed The Crucible, it's such a heavy topic that sometimes doesn't get the weight it deserves. Yes, the play is considered fiction, but it's based on real people who died in a horrific way. Having never read it before auditioning for it, I came out with a huge admiration for those that lived it and innocently and needlessly died.
I was born in Lowell, MA and we visited Salem many times while I was growing up. Did you go to the House of Seven Gables? A Tennesseean telling a New Englander how to pronounce Peabody is hilarious. And as a native New Englander that has family in Peabody, you're wrong.
As an amateur historian I adore Salem. This town's got history for days and as a fellow Hocus Pocus fan, YES. Did you know, Ashleigh that witch hunts were about retribution? Having a little feud with your neighbor? Accuse them of witchcraft. Happy 4th Anniversary, you guys.
You have no idea how happy I am to see this video. I live about an hour and a half away from Salem in NH and I've gone there so many times starting from fourth grade to my yearly pilgrimage there in October. I am so happy you and Blake had a great anniversary trip there (and that's an amazing spot for an anniversary). It was so cool seeing so many familiar places from the perspective of someone from someone visiting there for the first time from a different part of the country. There were so any parts of this video when i saw Olde Town Hall, Pepper Company, Crow haven Corner, etc. that I was like "I KNOW THAT PLACE" (cue excited pointing). I first went to the Salem Witch Museum circa 1990 and I see they never changed the presentation. Derby Wharf is also one of my favorite places anywhere and was so happy you explored it. I've never been to the Witch House or the Pioneer Village so this video officially put those on my to-do list. Sorry you didn't like lobster, I adore it personally but it is a unique taste.
This was a great video ☺️ BUT I need people to look at time stamp 4:25. Does that women in the painting they are all pointing to look like Ashleigh or am l seeing things? Thats spooky 👻 😳
Only 19 were sentenced to death. The other death was Giles Corey, who was pressed to death. Backstory is that if you were convicted of witchcraft (or other crimes, like murder, robbery, etc), all your property would revert to the Crown (Salem was a British Colony then), leaving your heirs nothing. When accused, you were required to enter plea of guilty/not guilty (like today). If you wouldn't plea, they would 'press' you with increasing weight until you entered plea (this is where term 'He was pressed into doing X' comes from). But by not entering plea & being pressed to death, his heirs were able to inherit his property. As G. Corey could see what was going to happen, he had himself pressed to death so his heirs wouldn't be destitute.
This is fantastic. Would absolutely watch a travelogue series of you visiting various cities. Also don't know if it's been recommended to you before but I think you'd dig the Fear Street trilogy - three fun horror movies about the legacy of a town founded on the witch-trial era.
How lovely of you to take time to film and share your vacation with us 🥰. For health reasons, I cannot travel so getting a taste of places I’d love to see is wonderful!! Thank you to you and the hubbins 🧡🖤🧡
A Lot of Salem always reminded me of Old City, Philadelphia. Which makes sense. Many buildings date back to the Colonial Era. Old City at Night or in a Fog can be very unsettling. Love this video!
Many buildings date back to the 17th century. The witch hunt insanity occurred in 1692.. One of my 17th century ancestor Elisa Dikes was accused of witchcraft arrested but she was found innocent.
I used to live in Salem, and worked for a time at The Witch House and The House of the Seven Gables. I am glad you enjoyed yourselves during your trip. You are right, Salem is an odd mix of tourist traps and actual history and it never quite gels together yet it seems to work for the city. I currently live in Georgia but I was lucky enough to get back for a quick Salem trip myself last month. Happy Anniversary and thank you for the little taste of "home".
Such a fun video! We visited this August, and if you want to talk about not planning ahead, we arrived on Sunday afternoon and left mid-morning Monday, not knowing everything closes about 7 p.m. Sunday and doesn't reopen til at least 10 a.m. Monday. But we still had a great time. It's definitely worth booking a tour of Old Town.
Salem was one of my favorite vacations. I was able to see all the spots you did and thoroughly enjoyed everything. I was also able to leave flowers at the memorial of my 8th-great-grandaunt Mary Parker who was one of those executed.
Great video Ashleigh. I love Salem. It's such a beautiful little city. The thing with lobster is it's really hit or miss. The people that love it REALLY love it, and will pay anything asked. Personally, I prefer fried or steamed clams any day. And true New Englanders eat the clam bellies.
Thank you for showing us around Salem, MA, USA. It's interesting to me as I've recently been looking at the earlier Witch Trials held in my home town of Chelmsford, England. It seems there are some links to the Salem trials. I recently watched a live YT feed with people from Salem and some from one of our local museums discussing the links, and just yesterday was looking at the memorial sign and tree for where the first "witch", Agnes Waterhouse, and many others were hanged from 1566.
Native of Providence here, where Halloween trips to Salem are kind of a teenage rite of passage. Great, honest and (of course) entertaining review of the town! Laughed out loud when you mentioned Marblehead! ... Synonymous with "old money" in New England...the kind of place where folks put "of Marblehead" at the end of their names ...and, yes, sometimes the turkeys attack...
SO happy to know you visited my state!! I only wish I had ben able to get down over to Salem to find the Hot Mess Express in person, but I am happy you enjoyed yourself and enjoyed it before the October 1 chaos! Haha. And yeah, Massachusetts has a lot of older homes with smaller stairs; even my house has that, and it sucks, haha. And kudos to Hubbin for filming and editing! Extra applause for him!! And sorry Ashleigh, it is not PEE-BODY, it is PEA-BAH-DEE!!
Now you have me wondering when you were there. I just finished my Massachusetts trip a couple of weeks ago. Main point was spending the night in the Borden house down in Fall River, but Salem was a stop also. Thanks for the tour from your perspective.
Salem resident here: so glad you had fun here! We live a few blocks from Pioneer Village and Salem is the best! Inclusive, fun, and always something to do. Come back again -- there's so much to do. (I need to know where you ate when you were here.)
Ok , this made me wanna go to Salem! I love your reaction vids but I also love vids you do like this… your not afraid to laugh at yourself and you have so much enthusiasm!!!!!
On my bucket list. With having major appreciation for history would be my main reason for going, and yes, according to my Ancestry, I had family accused a of witchcraft, but they were acquitted. What I've always found funny is how they play-up the witch stuff, but those found guilty of witchcraft were not actual witches, but I get it. Very Happy Anniversary to you and Blake, and I loved the picture of the two of you together.
Shout out from Mass. I'm in rutland, center of the state. Been to Salem many times. I grew up here in MA and all over new england you always have that "old country/colonial" vibe.
It makes me happy to see how much you enjoyed my hometown. Did you happen to find Max’s house on Ocean Ave? Did you hit up Count Orlock’s or Witch City Wicks? Great video, btw. 🤘🏻😎
You should have stopped by Fall River Mass. Lizzy Borden's house is a bed and breakfast. And they have Battleship Cove, home of the Battleship Massachusetts and museum. Also home of Emeril the cook. BAM !
OMG! I missed seeing you there! I was just visiting Salem. That's crazy. So much fun! All the Hocus Pocus filming locations are fun to check out. My 9x-great-grandmother was executed in Salem for witchcraft.
I took a trip to Salem this spring for a wedding. I was very excited to see the witch memorial because my great something grandfather was hung in the witch trials on my moms side. I saw his name in your video, George Burroughs. It is sad but I also find it so interesting.
As a New England native living just north of Boston, I'm so glad you decided to come up to Salem for your anniversary and had a good time. My wife and I like to head up that way from time to time. Happy anniversary, and I'm gonna be honest I love your dumb jokes.
Great vid little sis!! I have always wanted to go to Salem, Mass. I probably will never get the chance to, but your video is almost like being there myself. :) Also, you should really try to watch The Crucible (1996) which stars Daniel Day Lewis and Wynona Rider, it is about the witch trials and such a good film. Perhaps next anniversary, you and Hubben can check out Jamestown and Williamsburg Virginia, they have some wonderful historical stuffs.
I am a huge history buff, and watch a crap ton of historical documentaries. I can say with complete honesty that that is the most entertaining walkthrough of a historic place I have ever seen! I would love to see more of "Ashleigh's Hot Mess Express goes to..." wherever. That was awesome!
I've done the Salem on Halloween trip multiple times staying at the Salem Inn and going to the huge Ball at the Hawthorne hotel. Definitely a great time and a ton of fun to do with all the history around town and all the stuff they do from the end of September to October 31st. really a great trip to enjoy.
I've been to Salem and it's a lovely town. I'm glad you enjoyed it! I love your travelogue narration and I hope you do more of these especially if you're going to give us some history too. Keep up the great content!
I love places like that full of history. I've been to that candy store. If I remember correctly it's the oldest family owned candy store began in 1806 I believe. I love the architecture in the town. The way the churches look are cool. You are correct a lot of walking. Enjoyed the video. Much Love to you and all the best. ❤🙂
Hi Ashleigh. I live in Massachusetts. I’ve been to Salem a few times in my lifetime. Thank you for balancing the tourist traps with learning the actual history. Did you go the Bunghole around the corner from the Salem Witch Museum?
Thank you for callling out Peabody it legit drove me insane when I was there…..also I played quidditch on the commons (with permission) but it was raining and I’m honestly shocked the grass grew back
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO YOU AND HUBBIN! I've wanted to visit Salem for years!! Did you meet any of the Brady, DiMera, or Horton families? Eat some of that famous Brady chowder in the Brady Pub?** **Days of Our Lives 'jokes'
That "deez nuts" joke with Blake just saying "(sigh)..okay." was so fucking funny!
I love the resigned "OK" from Blake when Ashleigh does her "these nuts" joke.

It goes even deeper than that. It was also used as leverage to "acquire" land from their neighbors.
I loved visiting Salem as well. Now my favorite part of Hocus Pocus is playing the "Hey, I've been there" game.
You have no idea how happy I am to see this video. Your face when you landed the deez nuts joke... omg. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ash, you looked WAY too pleased with yourself after that dad joke... 🤦♀🤦♀🤦♀🤣
Love this ! and love you! and Hubben!

I loved Salem and also enjoyed Plymouth. This was a great video and loved your commentary. Glad you had a good time....
I love your narration. Listening to it, it comes off are that you a natural at this. You should do more!
So, Bewitched was filmed in Los Angeles. But, for 1 or 2 episodes the exterior of a building was used for the show.
My cat Squeeks really enjoyed your video. She even stopped giving me the evil eye because I wouldn't share my cheesecake with her.
Hooray. Welcome to Massachusetts. Enjoy all that New England has to offer. Salem is top notch for History and Architecture.
This was great. I've always wanted to go there. Did you fly or drive??? Driving would take so long lol

Really enjoyed this type of video from you. I've seen almost every movie that you have reviewed over the years but have NOT seen Hocus Pocus!
THIS IS AWESOME AND HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!
Nice one Ashleigh. Interesting , informative and fun! Also, Salem is the name of Sabrina's Cat in Sabrina the Teenage Witch..😆👍

I grew up about three miles from Salem. I love this video. I love Hocus Pocus, love your channel.
Ashleigh This was a great video headphone watching. It enjoyed your bloopers. We would love to see more videos like this.

PS The turkeys are a real issue around here. I had a very confused one on the roof of my garage recently.

I LOVE New England. Have been there twice during indian summer. Salem appeared to me like the home of Halloween madness 🙂
You are not the only one who doesn't plan ahead. There are lots of us.😊❤Nice job Blake for shooting this. Hello from Pa USA 🇺🇸 ❤❤❤.
Hi Ashleigh. I live in Massachusetts. I’ve been to Salem a few times in my lifetime. Thank you for balancing the tourist traps with learning the actual history. Did you go the Bunghole around the corner from the Salem Witch Museum?

Happy Anniversary!!!!
Please put Blade on your Wednesday HallowBeans poll.
Great video!
I ‘ve been to Salem a couple times! It’s such a cool place. The first time I went, none of my pictures would focus, though. 😳
Gotta love how hubbin already sounds tired of your BS just before you deliver the "Deez Nuts" punchline.🤣
It looks like you had a great anniversary❤
I was in Salem in 1987. Went to the Witch Museum with my then girlfriend. It was fun!!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY TO YOU AND HUBBIN! I've wanted to visit Salem for years!! Did you meet any of the Brady, DiMera, or Horton families? Eat some of that famous Brady chowder in the Brady Pub?**
