We Happy Few: What Actually Happened to Percy and the Other Children in Germany?

  • In this video I am looking at what would have happened to Percy and the other children after they were taken to Germany.
    The coloured film clips are taken from two movies based on Lidice - Operation Daybreak (1975) and Lidice (2011).
    The black and white clips are historical footage, largely sourced from the documentary 'Lebensborn - The Forgotten Victims' (2019) which I recommend if you want to know more about the Lebensborn program.

    Percy was probably sent to the "Am Spiegelgrund clinic", where they experimented on him til he passed away.

    • @EvenBadWolvesGaming

      He would have missed Am Spiegelgrund by 2 years but yeah he could have ended up in a similar facility.

      Probably to a facility in Germany, since the train was headed there. Would be interesting though, if he somehow escaped. Do we know anything about the outside world of We Happy Few?

      Very little and if Percy did manage to escape it doesn’t seem like he’d be able to get very far on his own.

    I would like a sequel to We Happy Few, where Arthur discovers what happened to Percy. I doubt we will get one due to poor sales. It’s a pity as the story and setting are compelling.

    As hopeful as we could all be with the whole 'leaving it to the player's imagination', we can all agreee that Percy was as good as dead the moment he got on that train or whatever fate he had afterwards arriving in Germany would make u wush he was dead considering his condition (presumably autism.) It was bad enough that he was stigmatized in his own hometown but it it was still a safe haven compared to what awaited him in Nazis Germany where they didn't take kindly to the mentally challenged back one bit. Either one of his episodes of panic likely from getting abandoned by Arthur would've led to him being shot/killed by the soldiers who couldn't de bothered dealing with him like they did Margaret or worse, he was taking away to be experimented on facing inhumane experiments until he died a slow painful death.
    Overall, Percy is the most tragic character in We Happy Few. He wouldn't stand a chance against an unforgivable would after his only source of protection abandoned him.

      Agreed it isn't likely he survive. However, Germany may not have been under the control of the Nazis in We Happy Few's timeline. Not only is Rommel the Fuhrer but the German flag seen in game is not the Nazi flag.

      @@EvenBadWolvesGaming I think the politics of Germany were intentionally not the focus of the game (to focus on the aspect of british brand of peer pressure), and the H-word leader and flag were most likely just left out for safety and marketability (I think maybe it would mean insta-ban in Australia, and possibly Germany itself, unless they got a different edition without those).

    I remember a note in the game that said that the Red army had essentially extended the iron curtain to the entire continent of Europe and that the General in the game was in talks with the Red Army but they were unable to find information. To quote the letter. “It. Is impossible for hundreds of children to disappear and it is unthinkable that the Russians would use them as a bargaining chip with the Americans, even communists are parents.” Remember that this is a alternate universe so maybe after the war the United Kingdom was just a shell of its former self and we don’t know what happened to either the rest of the British Empire or the world as a whole.

    Judging by the fact in the game that the Germans shot a scared little girl in the back, I’d have to say they were probably just as brutal in the game. It’s kind of more lighthearted, but it still has its dark undertones that can shock you, such as the piñata really being a rat, or the government being completely inept and willing to run everything into the ground.

    I remember reading some of the notes and letters in town in the game saying how some people hide their children.
    But what I would like to know is what happened to the children born after? In the game in one of the newspapers there is talk about a “baby riot” in where a group and women and men attack pregnant women and their new borns.
    In the end of the game we see Arthur leave the island and he finds a red headed boy and general Byng talks about sending the new borns and small children over the bridge.

    • @EvenBadWolvesGaming
      @EvenBadWolvesGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +49

      The implication by Byng is that the children that were born and not smuggled out were killed.
      But after everyone started taking Joy, they stopped having children as it worked as a contraceptive. Sally got pregnant because she stopped taking Joy.

    Imagine, destroying an entire city and riling up it's population to reunite with a brother who will likely never be found. One has to wonder, was it still a good idea to leave? Looking at the events of "We All Fall Down" you would assume that yes, it was the right move....
    That being said, if Arthur takes his joy at the opening of the game:
    He never tries to escape, leaving the Parade district plague free and well enough in tact
    He never gets recruited by Ollie to go fall through a paper tank
    Ollie then therefore never forces Victoria Byng off her Joy
    Victoria Byng never destroys the Joy pill distributor or water treatment plant
    Anton Verloc successfully lobotomizes the entire city???
    At the very least Arthur insured that Wellington Wells would go out with a bang rather than a whimper

      @Milan____ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Both the pill supply and the food supply would soon run dry, and the mines could collapse sooner or later without his intervention. The city had its own share of freewheeling madmen.

    The fact that Germany has a different leader, they were using different tactics, and were surviving the war longer and doing better means a lot. The friction between Hitler and his general staff is what ended up causing a lot of problems for Germany towards the end of the war.
    My great grandmother escaped from German occupied Poland during the Soviet invasion on a German ship. Apparently the German commander decided to drop off as many women and children as they could in the Netherlands where they would be safe, before going to their final battle. My great grandmother later immigrated to the United States after being taken to Ellis island. In Poland she was an orphan so she had nothing to go back to.

    Even though we see no nazi stuff in game and the furher is Rommel, I find it hard to believe it wasn’t for any other purpose than to make the game available in all countries, like Germany. Rommel was a competent general, and a humane one at that, and it’s hard to believe he would have done anything like taking children away.

    *I’ve been able to grasp and understand the story of this game but I’m almost more curious as to the world building outside of where these games take place*
    As of today I have been looking into the story of this game and have been finding it really cool.
    Due to my lack of knowledge on the game and where to find reliable information on it, I thought I would ask a question here.
    Is there any information on what the outside world is like or how the outside world views the locations this game takes place at?

    I always thought that the children would have been used as soldiers against the soviets. and the reason they took the children was so they could be moulded and corrupted into un feeling killing machines.

    • @EvenBadWolvesGaming
      @EvenBadWolvesGaming  ปีที่แล้ว +14

      I actually had to cut a part of the video that talked about this (TH-cam doesn’t like child soldiers). It would be very unlikely that the children were used as soldiers.
      There were young children used as soldiers but these were members of the Hitler Youth who were highly indoctrinated. Most of these were teenagers but there was a couple 12 year olds we know of who received military honours.
      The soldiers were meant to represent the ideal German which is why so much effort was put into their appearance down to tailoring uniforms for each individual member of the SS.
      English children wouldn’t fit this ideal and are highly unlikely to be trusted to fight alongside ‘proper German’ children. Even if they were it would only have been the boys and only the oldest of the taken children.
      Even if it was planned (which irl didn’t happen with the other children that were taken) a year wouldn’t have been long enough to Germanise them, train them and deploy them.
