I've made an improved mining ship tutorial which you can find here: th-cam.com/video/i0Ggu2WyigU/w-d-xo.html This ship is more friendly to new players and teaches some other things which have been added to the game since this video was made :)
Note: if anyone is planning on dumping a few thousand pound of Rock from your inventory - do NOT stand next to anything. I was crushed to death by my giant ice ball. Just a forewarning.
Agree. The official videos are...pretty much garbage. Splitsie has a lot of experience in this game, and more importantly, has a very good delivery style for communicating information. I've really enjoyed his Survival, Maybe and Survival, Unlikely series - even though I'm not a fan of his form over function, OCD and control tendencies. That said, he is by far the best TH-camr I've found for explaining game mechanics as well as providing great ideas on design concepts and grid/block functions.
Yep exactly, the game is harder to start and you're more dependent on what you have than other games. Love your vid, no annoying voice either haha thank you
I followed this along as closely as possible to get started and promptly flipped my ship upside down wrecking it. Now I'm doing all of this on foot since I refuse to restart my game. The stars and moons mock me as they beckon. LOL.
Pro-Tip for using ship drills. While holding down either the left-mouse or right-mouse button, open your inventory menu, then let go of your mouse button and close the inventory menu. Your ship drill will continue operating until you click a mouse button to stop it!
It's a very handy method, used it the whole time during my tram excavations in my single player series. I probably could have included it in the video but held off since it felt a bit overwhelming to have it in there when I'd already prattled on about the drills for a while :P
Huh, I might be "veteran" with this game, but it never occured me to toggle off backward thrusters for cruising. That's handy. I do have one extra tip: Add a camera by connector, preferably so that the camera's "up" is ship's forward (If you've a bottom connector, that is). If you place camera right behind a small port of the connector, you can get pretty clear view of where your connector is and that makes parking a lot easier than fiddling with third person camera.
important information for this camera view: if the cam is centered on the connector and right next to it the crosshair on the cam view is in fact lined up with one of the lights on the big connector. so when approaching the connector all you gotta do is align the crosshair with the bottom little lamp (if the camera is mounted behind the connector and facing up=forward) and you are perfectly aligned to the connector
I'll have to try to remember this when I talk about remote controls and cameras, as it's a very useful function of them, that I very rarely use :P (out of laziness)
Me and a couple of friends have had this game for a really long time but were always put off by the difficulty. So much time has passed and in a few days we're going to start playing all together thanks to your videos. By now we're all in college and some of my friends are actually taking engineering. This series is extremely well made and everything is expained in a simple yet complete way, all while remaining extremely efficient without clogging it with info. Truly an amazing job! You gained at least one subscriber.
Lol I'm not against sponsored content as such, just against that game and sponsors like it that have a terrible product and seemingly infinite advertising budget 🫤
five years later and these tutorials are still amazing, i love how flexible they can be where if i wanted to i could tweak something without it exploding, "THANK YOU SPLITSIE" we all chant in unison
thank god, i was waiting for this just grabbed the game and im watching all your tutorial videos and replicating them on creative trying to understand more about the mechanics, pretty okayish so far thanks for the videos dude, ur a beast
You're very welcome, glad they've been helpful. SE is a lot of fun, but even with the improvements to the early game mechanics they've made it still has a very steep learning curve that I hope to even out a little :)
i got the game about 2 years ago but never realy got into it. i kinda knew how to play but i had problems finding resources for starter mining ship so this was useful for me
@@Splitsie It is really good tutorial. My congratulation. One nitpick though. Reverse thrust is one on front. On back is forward thrust. Yes I know it is bit counterintuitive, but it relate to the movement.
Dude thank you so much, I have not even booted up the game and downloaded it today! I was going to start the tutorials and jump into survival.... but I can def start in creative so I don't be stupid ahahah
This is no longer a thing(at least on console) unparking (P or (y)) doesn't cross to subgrids anymore also you have the ability to turnoff "use for parking" on connectors and landing gear
Wow you may be the best person on youtube I've ever seen when it comes to transfering knowledge. Your format and talking is so on point, not too slow, very articulate and clear and very interesting as if it is a lets play and not a tutorial. I'm subscribing just because I've never seen someone as good as you at teaching stuff. And I tried SE and gave up 3 times now I'm quite eager to hop into it and start playing, thank you.
Another tip for keeping your ship horizontal. Sometimes the HUD artificial horizon is hard to see (either because it gets lost in a light background or its in an unexpected location). But all is not lost. To the right of the Hot Bar there is a circle that also provides a representation of your orientation. It is often easier to use this for your vehicle orientation than the HUD version as it is always visible and always in the same location..
Lol I was gonna say couldn’t you just turn off inertial dampeners instead of switching off the front thruster. But then I remembered there is this thing called gravity.
@@Splitsie i have died many a time because i was moving at the speed of fast and bumped into a wall a bit hard (the only reason i think space is easier)
I may miss the point here (being just a few hours into the game), because that were my thoughts exactly - what's wrong with deactivating the dampeners (as long as you reactivate them with enough time/distance to slow down again?
Assuming this means you're new, Joe, have confidence that you too can learn by the Repetitive Traumatic Oopsie Method™, by which many of us veteran players learned. Oh, the disaster stories you'll have! Or just hop over to the helpful community at www.reddit.com/r/spaceengineers/ and ask your newbie questions there. Plenty of inspiring posts to read, as well.
As Matt said, the reddit is very helpful. One of the most amazing aspects of Space Engineers is the incredibly friendly and helpful community that's around it. For best results, post screenshots related to your question :) The turnaround on these tutorials is about a week due to wanting to be as sure as possible that the information I'm giving is clear and correct. I'd prefer to be a little slower than to rush out something sloppy and misleading, having said that, I do wish I had the time to get the beginner ones up to leaving the planet updated more quickly as the tutorials past that point can wait a little longer :)
If you've got access to a USB keyboard and mouse and are comfortable with that control scheme the xbox allows the use of them almost identically to how they work on the PC (all the shortcuts I tried when I tested the xbox beta worked for me) :)
just started playing, you tutorial is very good, one of the best there is online I found, controls UI of this game are very different, glad you explain it so clearly without getting boring.
You can also use spacebar to use the handbrake in rovers, also the refinery will pull from the first ore stack in what ever cargo it pulls from, so if you want to control what your refinery processes, it helps to keep all the ore in one box, but split the ore into multiple smaller stacks while arranging those stacks in the order you want them refined in. Otherwise you'll end up with the refinery churning through magnesium when you need iron. (that's how I figured this out.)
That's a really nice QOL tip about the ores, I hadn't noticed the priority before :) The main downside of using spacebar is that it won't stay on once you get out, I still use it while I'm driving in order to stop though :P
I played this game for a bout 15 minutes several (maybe 5 or so?) years ago - gave up because of how overwhelmingly difficult it was for me to get started. Your tutorials have made the game 1000x easier to start and soooo much more fun to play. New addiction unlocked. Thank you, Sir!
Just got into this game a few days ago. Been playing it with a friend, and we both went in blind. Been having a rough time at the start, but it’s been a blast. This video has taught me so much. Thank you for making this!
didn't know about the block tools and the ability for ships to use left/right click mining like the hand drill. Omg this changes everything! Thanks awesome videos!
The ones you build onto your ships, stations etc as I did with the drill in this video. They're often referred to as ship tools, but since they can be on a fixed station block tools is more accurate :)
Well, that doesn't look anything like MY first mining ship. The second one either, nestled beside the first at the bottom of pit. Well, the slag from it's explosion. And a backpack. Here's hoping for the third.
@@brianberry1851 I've mutilated and destroyed a few of his ships through careless ineptitude, usually after I watch a Splitie tutorial. I like to think I can fly like him. Reality always catches up to me right at the crash site, no matter how fast I go. ;)
Didnt play SE in years, decided to give it a try again. After hours and hours of frustration and farming by hand I decided to look for tutorials. This is the best I could find and it's probably one of the best tutorials on youtube not only SE- wise. Thank you
Can confirm, i feel good sharing these tutorials without having to add disclaimers and fill in the parts the tutorial make missed Still good tutorials but these are 👌👌
Nice video. One thing I noticed when playing. I settled at a high plateau, and I found that the height from 'sea level' affected the power of my thrusters. If fully loaded at a lower level I was able to fly straight, without dropping, but since my base was higher up, I ended up having to increase altitude as I was flying forward as the atmosphere was lower, so didn't get the same power from the engines.
Good observation. Yes, atmospheric thrusters are less effective with altitude, and will eventually be completely useless when you're halfway to space. There are other thruster types, of course: ion (useless at sea level, efficient in vacuum) and hydrogen (powerful, but resource hungry and they require other modules to keep them running, so it's a little more complicated). Enjoy those views from the plateau!
Once you have the resources I usually build a small hydrogen booster on the bottom that I toggle on and off for high altitude places to give me that small oomp and keep me airborne
@@nighteadge86 Yeah. I can get up to the ledge to get over the hump, but the thrusters (Or rather the power provided by the battery), isn't enough to maintain a level flight at the height. Need to adjust and inch forward. I've since started to build a base inside the plateau instead, using projector blocks and such. But damn, those aren't that easy to use.
That's a good point, I'll be highlighting that behaviour in the 'how to get to space' bit of the tutorial but had forgotten it might be useful before that stage :P
Wow! Your videos are so straight to the point yet paced well enough that you don't leave the class behind in the dust. You're an amazingly gifted speaker whether you know it or not. Very professional tone, friendly and inviting sounding, and I rarely (if ever at all) hear you say "um" or "ah" in your videos. Never any pointless rambling, every sentence literally has a purpose towards your lessons and never makes me feel like my time is wasted listening. Perhaps I'm digging too deep into it. But honest to goodness, I have never heard anyone produce a tutorial as well as this really in any regards! Bravo! Seriously brilliant work. Thank you so much for taking the time to make these videos. Keep up the amazing work friend!
Thank you very much, I do my best to avoid the umms in the first place but will edit them out if they're problematic - no one needs that when they're trying to learn :)
Thanks, feel free to share any extra tips you think up as well, I've been using the ones from the first rendition of these videos to try to improve things this time around :)
i recommend (if you have the resources for it) connecting an hydrogenengine to the h20 generator over the cockpit port so that if you run low on battery mid flight you can recharge your ship with ice (the hydrogengine would be attached sideways on the battery).
I'm not sure the hydrogen engine is particularly useful in that context, since it's heavy and will cost you fuel in the long run. But it's one of the aspects of it I'd like to test when I find time to do some detailed testing on it :)
H2/O2 generators full of ice weighs less than a hydrogen tank full of hydrogen so you may want to factor that in for hydrogen powered devices! But that hydrogen tank will take up more room on your ship though so you must think, "Is either really needed?!" If you plan on long expeditions though, batteries alone won't be enough, so having a 2nd power generation will be needed! I do know there are mods out there that give smaller tanks, which if you're ok with mods, go ahead & add them for that little extra run time!
I'm glad they've been helpful so far, I'm hoping to do some recording of some xbox specific stuff soon, though I haven't found anything terribly different other than the interface yet so fingers crossed these will all still be useful for you :)
I heard 'Power generation' for next episode and squeed just a bit. I'm having SO much trouble with the new Hydrogen Engine and based on the Forums I'm not alone!
Quick and dirty tips; You are going to need two o2h2 generator per hydroengine and zounds of ice. For base's power, I recommend using the engines for a boost. Say you need that miner ship recharged as fast as possible, nothing like the V8 like purr of hydroengine.
the problem with hydro engines is that they munch through ice like its nothing, because even when the rest of the base is completely idle and draws no power the amount of power the oxy generator draws to keep the engine topped up is crazy. its a death circle: the engine is not full-> oxy generator wants power to generate h2 for the engine->engine uses h2 to provide power->back to where we started... thats the biggest drawback you have when running on hydro-engines as a power-source alone. they can run themselves dry just idling. no other reactors do the same thing, provided they are connected to a refinery crunching uranium, but there the relation is much more favorable. imo hydro-engines are only useful for rovers without own means of h2 production where you connect to a base for instant refill of the tanks and get back to driving plus the fuel gauges don't properly work with those engines, as the amount of stored h2 and ice aren't factored in into your remaining power time.
They certainly seem to have limited usefulness, I plan to look at a couple of those aspects, but also want to do an in depth video on the engine like I did for the ladders since they very much need that sort of detailed breakdown. I really hope I find a good use for them, but it does seem a little unlikely :P
few batteries and 1-2 hydroengines with compliment of gens are pretty good for "mad maxing" in mars. Just gotta remember to keep healthy stock of ice in base or in rovers' inventories
@@Gebunator That's what I was thinking...have the hydro engine standing by with a Sorter Block turned off and ice ready to go. My miner/rover/whatever comes back and NEEDS to recharge so okay...fire up the Hydro engine. Kind of emergencies only.
I've been playing space engineers for years now but I still watch you to check if there are any more small things I can pick up. The fact that you keep me entertained definitely helps.
These videos are so well done. I watched a review of this game, while positive, it scared me that things would be so complicated id spend hours banging my head. Your videos give me an an excellent guide to learn the game and help me "Fly". Thanks.
Even when recording for these tutorials I searched about 15 different deposits before finding some that was around 4km from where I started, keep searching the areas with the surface markings and you will find some :)
Never use P, P is bad and context is everything ;) More seriously though, it's a habit that you are best off breaking out of. I was reminded of this during the stream with w4sted recently, where we lost a mining ship because he used P to disconnect the landing gear of our flying base which simultaneously disconnected the miner and sent it crashing straight into our base (adding injury to insult) :P
I've recently just come back to Space Engineers, so I am re watching all these vids (at least it give me an opportunity to leave a like, in case I missed it first time). I just got another quick tip, in the video Splitsie say's you can't double click the drill and keep it running whilst in the mining ship. I don't know if this is a bug or feature, but if you are mining like Splitsie and have your drills set up the same, what you can do is left click (or right click, both work) and whilst it is spinning hit TAB or what ever key goes to your inventory, let go of your mouse and your drills will keep spinning even after leaving the inventory. NOTE* They will stop when you hit either left or right click, whichever one you used to start the drills. So it behaves exactly the same as your hand held drill. Thanks for the vid Splitsie. Have a great day.
Trying to get my daughter into this game as shes a science nerd like me and I played this game for some time when it first came out. Saw it got a huge update and planets somewhere along the line and with your videos she feels like its something she could do. Thanks for great content!
That's awesome, hopefully she'll find as much fun in it as I've had :) On a side note, definitely good to hear about more girls being interested in games like SE, one of my favourite builders in SE is Adaline (woskshop page link: steamcommunity.com/id/c1evergirl/myworkshopfiles/ ) and her approach is such a refreshing change, I'm a big believer that with creative things, the more people with different backgrounds contributing, the more weird, wonderful and outright cool things will get created :)
You saved my life! I started playing few days ago and designed things alone as far as I can until I need to spoil things a bit with youtube tutorials, this one seems to be the more simple, exhaustive and concise I'de found. Thnk's so much.
As someone who watched this series about a year ago when I started playing, and now have 630 hours and am planning to design my own fleet of survival industry/exploration ships, I sincerely thank you. Without a series like this I may have given up on this game, or I wouldn't know as much as I do now.
Thank you so much for these videos. I started SE singleplayer a few days back, and while I'm having a blast now it was SO hard to figure out what to do starting off -- much less doing it all without everything exploding. Huge help
Dang this dude is really helpful. I don't have the game yet but after watching your videos I am confident enough to get the game after a year or so of thinking about getting it.
Excellent series so far. I've been away from SE for a long time, and decided to give it a try now it's released, and I couldn't make heads or tails with all the changes. This series so far has answered all my questions, can't wait for more episodes!
I just got this game a few days ago and have been so horrendously confused with things that I was starting to regret getting this game but after watching your videos I’m not only learning how to get things done but I’m finally having fun. The games controls are so much harder on the Xbox but I am still able to follow along and I just wanted to say thanks so much to this definitely best tutorials I’ve found on TH-cam! You deserve to be recognised by the creators for this content
You're very welcome, I'm glad you finally found the fun. If you haven't already found it, the help page on xbox for controls is really useful - go to the menu then press Y and go to advanced controls to get a lot of the shortcuts for things I talk about. If you're comfortable with mouse and keyboard though, you can plug them in to your xbox and use them instead (if you've got a usb one available) :)
i've put more than 300 hours into space engineers and i genuinely didn't know the ship drill had a "tunnel-clearing" mode like the hand drill did, because i've always just bound them to action groups. that would've made mining so much easier, rather than having to design my ships with dozens of ejectors to remove all the unwanted stone i was picking up! Thanks for that little tidbit.
I am absolutely loving this game. What I'm trying to do is get a sneak peek at what you're doing, then do it on my own in my world. I mess up a lot, but I learn, and I do things my way, then I watch your video again and feel stupid because I could have done it a better way. But that's the fun part of playing a sandbox for me, making all the mistakes and figuring out a better way to do them. It's like I'm learning to play the game twice which is twice the fun! But yeah every time there's something I don't understand at all, I just go back to this video. Thanks Splitsie, I subscribed!
Started watching your Getting Started series. Bought the game, have been following along watching, building, at the same time. Epic style of presenting the game. So easy to learn from you. Keep it up.
just watching this for the first time after playing close to 100 hours. great video! i'd like to mention that whatever youre carrying in your inventory is also added to the weight of the ship. you can drop some things off in a passenger seat which is nice especially if playing with a friend.
From what I've experienced your personal inventory doesn't get included in the ship mass unless it's been changed very recently, but the seat thing can be very handy - just be careful not to do my usual trick: forget you have things stored there and destroy them when you go to move the chair :P
With me having just started out with space engineers I'm really looking forward to this series being continued. I'm learning quite a lot (like the double click tool function) which is very handy while having a lot of fun following you along. Keep the good work up!
I had just finished going through your old series of these brushing up on blueprints an some of the more intro things to find a new series. glad to see these updated versions rolling out =)
Thanks, I'm hoping I can get the next one out for the weekend and if I'm lucky, maybe a test and a tutorial next week... depends how busy my day job is :P
i owe you a HUGE thanks for the vid Splitsie, before i saw this i could never get a ship to leave the ground let alone fly and mine, and using this vid i was able to set my self up a little miner for the early stages, then i was able to build bigger using more of your guides after using the drop pod like you did, made the game tons more fun and i was able to explore..............then explode
Turning off forward thrusters is genius, I always used forward-backward thrusters fixed to a rotor, so I can 180 them depending on which direction I need to thrust. I always have to set up complicated locking mechanisms to reduce clang. Simply turning them off never popped into my mind, I love it
Your videos are super informative and I like the narration too, struggled getting to grips with this game and didnt have the time to study it in detail so your tutorials are much appreciated...Great game.
meanwhile ive spent 9 hours playing so far and i only just got my car to hop around the moon while putting myself and the car in danger this helped me so damn much
Another great Tutorial. I loved your last series a lot. You didn't get me start playing Space Engineers, but with your guides you did make it a lot easier to learn and enjoy, thanks!
Haha just bought this game and went straight to Red Ship in survival. Walked around awkwardly on the base for 20 minutes thinking "well... I'm surviving." Then came here. Great help thanks.
8:23 The magic of Jetpacks can help in those tight situation. Just turn them on and rotate yourself as in zerog, then insert the head in the hole. To weld under your vehicle, just turn yourself upside down.
Around 18:20 ish when you were explaining transfer of power between ship and base. Gave me an idea. You could in theory have a fleet of auto ships go out and collect solar power then fly back and distribute power to the base. Granted this is a HORRIBLY inefficient way of doing things but it is a possibility. Maybe as a sort of set piece where you pretend they're gathering a different type of energy or something idk.
@@Splitsie That sounds like factorio/satisfactory shenanigans to me but doesn't surprise me it's possible in this to. Now if I could just find cobalt. Finding everything BUT that
Way late to the party, but just now getting into the game. After a few hours of bumbling through the tutorial I came to YT seeking exactly this information. Excellent job, very informative, subbed, thank you.
Man I got the best spawnpoint in survival.. A valley next to a giant ice lake, and with mountains full of iron and cobalt on the side :D btw, thank you so much for your tutorials, couldn't have made it without you
Love the video and have no started watching all of your other videos. Honestly have no found any other instructional video anywhere as good as yours, ty. I have come across a problem that after hours or research, have not come up with the answer so far. First the problem: The ship (built per the video) will not automatically unload once connected. To answer some of the forthcoming questions: yes, there is a double green connection at the connector (bottom of the ship). Yes all of the conveyors from the cockpit to the small storage container are green. The connector is hooked directly to the refinery so ensure nothing is getting in the way. I have rebuilt the cockpit, drill, storage, refinery, connector and just about everything else I can think of. I have 6 wind turbines, so plenty of power. I also cannot manually move the ores either. I'm sure the answer it's obvious to some of you, I would like to move past this issue and continue enjoying the game, any advise would be greatly appreciate ?
Cargo doesn't automatically move in Space Engineers except under specific circumstances. There are a few blocks that can push/pull their cargo e.g. Refineries will pull accessible ores, Assemblers will pull accessible ingots and drills will push their ore to any connected inventories. Cargo containers won't do anything, they're passive storage. This means when you connect to your base there's nothing to tell the game to move your cargo, you'll either need to use sorters, scripts or manually move it :)
@@Splitsie you had said in your video: ...we can drag this straight from our inventory into the refinery: I cannot. You also said "the refinery will automatically grab things from the ship if its got space in its inventory but it will do it", it does not. I watched in the video you manually dragging ores from the ship to the refinery, I'll be even fine with that too, but it won't let me do it.
I tore everything back out of the ship once again, and rebuilt it for the 3rd time, to my amazement it functions as you suggested. Knowing some basic ground rules that you provided certainly helped. I'm not sure what, if anything was changed on the third rebuild, but it does finally function correctly. I would also like to add, I was completely impressed on how fast you responded to my concern here on You-tube. I will say that is a first. Top Notch !

Pro-Tip for using ship drills. While holding down either the left-mouse or right-mouse button, open your inventory menu, then let go of your mouse button and close the inventory menu. Your ship drill will continue operating until you click a mouse button to stop it!
true , true
It's a feature, not a bug!
discovered that a while ago and still using it every times
It's a very handy method, used it the whole time during my tram excavations in my single player series. I probably could have included it in the video but held off since it felt a bit overwhelming to have it in there when I'd already prattled on about the drills for a while :P
It's a nice tip, but we can use alternate drill on/off function too :)
Huh, I might be "veteran" with this game, but it never occured me to toggle off backward thrusters for cruising. That's handy. I do have one extra tip: Add a camera by connector, preferably so that the camera's "up" is ship's forward (If you've a bottom connector, that is). If you place camera right behind a small port of the connector, you can get pretty clear view of where your connector is and that makes parking a lot easier than fiddling with third person camera.
important information for this camera view:
if the cam is centered on the connector and right next to it the crosshair on the cam view is in fact lined up with one of the lights on the big connector.
so when approaching the connector all you gotta do is align the crosshair with the bottom little lamp (if the camera is mounted behind the connector and facing up=forward) and you are perfectly aligned to the connector
You can put remote controller in same direction than camera and use it from hot-bar when approaching for better controlling docking procedure.
I'll have to try to remember this when I talk about remote controls and cameras, as it's a very useful function of them, that I very rarely use :P
(out of laziness)
yeah its good, saves fuel :D
I always use a camera right next to my connector and have found it much easier to connect then trying to align with the third person camera.
I've been playing space engineers for about 4 years and I was still able to learn from this newly starting series

thanks for the videos dude, ur a beast

Thank you very much for the kind words :)
1200 hours and I still forget this.
Very good point, it's something I rarely use but should probably highlight more :)
Lol I was gonna say couldn’t you just turn off inertial dampeners instead of switching off the front thruster. But then I remembered there is this thing called gravity.
She's a harsh mistress that one :P
@@Splitsie i have died many a time because i was moving at the speed of fast and bumped into a wall a bit hard (the only reason i think space is easier)
I may miss the point here (being just a few hours into the game), because that were my thoughts exactly - what's wrong with deactivating the dampeners (as long as you reactivate them with enough time/distance to slow down again?
These tutorials are sooooo good for new players. Please don't make we wait a week again for the next one :)
For best results, post screenshots related to your question :)
The turnaround on these tutorials is about a week due to wanting to be as sure as possible that the information I'm giving is clear and correct. I'd prefer to be a little slower than to rush out something sloppy and misleading, having said that, I do wish I had the time to get the beginner ones up to leaving the planet updated more quickly as the tutorials past that point can wait a little longer :)

Probably the most informative videos I have seen so far. Great upload. Thanks.
Thanks and you're very welcome :)
That's a really nice QOL tip about the ores, I hadn't noticed the priority before :)
The main downside of using spacebar is that it won't stay on once you get out, I still use it while I'm driving in order to stop though :P
You're very welcome 🙂
didn't know about the block tools and the ability for ships to use left/right click mining like the hand drill. Omg this changes everything! Thanks awesome videos!
You're very welcome, it's ridiculously easy to miss stuff like that :)

Thanks :)
I'm glad you're updating your tutorials keep up the good work, I can't wait for next week!
Thanks, will do, also hoping to do some proper tests on the hydro engine and turbines soon :)
@@Pecomica yeah i gotcha just the hop method can help a little early on if you get resource greedy but i know exactly what you mean
Just started watching and even for a veteran with over 1k hours, I'm still learning efficient methods. Fantastic video, keep up the good work!
Hydrogen engins are really really ice hungry, if you want to resarchge a battery.
"Because using gravity is the efficient way to go." Famous last words.
Great video as always
I'm really excited for more of these updated tutorials!
Thanks, trying to get them out as quickly as I can (while still trying to keep from teaching the wrong thing) :)
I want you to know that 4 years later I still use this video series to help me get started. Thanks for making it.
Thanks :)
Playing the Xbox one closed beta currently and the 1st 2 videos of this series has helped me so so much so far. Good job
I'm glad they've been helpful so far, I'm hoping to do some recording of some xbox specific stuff soon, though I haven't found anything terribly different other than the interface yet so fingers crossed these will all still be useful for you :)
9:24
Yeah, usually drill ships have drills
i immediately flipped my ship
I heard 'Power generation' for next episode and squeed just a bit. I'm having SO much trouble with the new Hydrogen Engine and based on the Forums I'm not alone!
Quick and dirty tips; You are going to need two o2h2 generator per hydroengine and zounds of ice. For base's power, I recommend using the engines for a boost. Say you need that miner ship recharged as fast as possible, nothing like the V8 like purr of hydroengine.
the problem with hydro engines is that they munch through ice like its nothing, because even when the rest of the base is completely idle and draws no power the amount of power the oxy generator draws to keep the engine topped up is crazy.
its a death circle: the engine is not full-> oxy generator wants power to generate h2 for the engine->engine uses h2 to provide power->back to where we started...
thats the biggest drawback you have when running on hydro-engines as a power-source alone. they can run themselves dry just idling.
no other reactors do the same thing, provided they are connected to a refinery crunching uranium, but there the relation is much more favorable.
imo hydro-engines are only useful for rovers without own means of h2 production where you connect to a base for instant refill of the tanks and get back to driving
plus the fuel gauges don't properly work with those engines, as the amount of stored h2 and ice aren't factored in into your remaining power time.

Also love ur vids
I use P >:(
Its ok, but its probably better that newbies be traumatized from pressing it
I have been folded, stapled and spindled by using P. It doesn't always get you, but it's always bad when it does. ;)
Never use P, P is bad and context is everything ;)
More seriously though, it's a habit that you are best off breaking out of.

On a side note, definitely good to hear about more girls being interested in games like SE, one of my favourite builders in SE is Adaline (woskshop page link: steamcommunity.com/id/c1evergirl/myworkshopfiles/ ) and her approach is such a refreshing change, I'm a big believer that with creative things, the more people with different backgrounds contributing, the more weird, wonderful and outright cool things will get created :)

I am new to the game, like 2 days in. And so far I follow your video step by step. Great tutorial. I would be screwed without it.
i've put more than 300 hours into space engineers and i genuinely didn't know the ship drill had a "tunnel-clearing" mode like the hand drill did, because i've always just bound them to action groups. that would've made mining so much easier, rather than having to design my ships with dozens of ejectors to remove all the unwanted stone i was picking up! Thanks for that little tidbit.
You're very welcome, it's amazing the things you learn when you have loads of people telling you ways to do what you're doing better :P
Glad you're enjoying it and finding the videos helpful :)
Started watching your Getting Started series. Bought the game, have been following along watching, building, at the same time. Epic style of presenting the game. So easy to learn from you. Keep it up.
Thanks, hope you find as much fun in SE as I have :)
just watching this for the first time after playing close to 100 hours. great video! i'd like to mention that whatever youre carrying in your inventory is also added to the weight of the ship. you can drop some things off in a passenger seat which is nice especially if playing with a friend.

I once built an entire underground tram in order to transfer power from a remote solar tower, never really used it but it was fun to build :P

I'm glad it was handy :)
Top Notch !
Nicely done and very informative Splitsie. I will have to try this set up myself
It's quite a fun one, there's something satisfying about remodelling the drop pod to keep it useful for longer :)
