Met Sir Brad several years back when he'd turned up out of the blue to ride a local time trial (Bickerstaffe/Rainford W Lancs) and I was cycling past saw him sat alone having just arrived putting his shoes on so I stopped and asked whether I could have a photo to which he kindly agreed. Lovely bloke. I told him how proud we all were of his TDF and Olympics. He was great and even politely asked whether I was doing the time trial - I was about 18 stone at the time and had just started road cycling so it was obvious I wouldn't have been up to it - I said no mate I'm just a fat lad having a bike ride. He smiled and just said 'well enjoy your ride'. Could've easily looked down his nose at me but he was really nice and I'll always remember meeting him.
The next morning I found out he'd smashed the record for the TT. I've still got the pic and I'm still cycling and about 4 stone lighter nowadays :) Top fella Sir Brad.

I was at the 2014 launch of the Tour Of Britain in Liverpool. Brad arrived alone in dark sunglasses and appeared to not to want to stop and speak to anyone. My then 12 year old daughter was leaning over the barriers and shouted his name on the way back. He stopped, looked at her, walked over to us & said 'Hi, how are you?' and signed her race programme. She's 20 next month and has never forgotten that day so thanks mate, both her & I appreciated it.

That was a brilliant interview with Bradley. It was nice to see the real him which like a lot of famous sports stars never comes out until they retire. Carl Fogarty is another who springs to mind, totally different now he's retired.

Thanks Katie! I enjoyed this as I do all your posts, interviews and videos. Loved the pictures of the ocean and sailing ships in the backdrop. The excitement that wells within you comes out in a beautiful smile. For me, the best takeaway from your interview with Bradley was his comment; 'The content of your character'. A very deep and meaningful phrase that is far overlooked by so many who are more worried about how they look and what they own. There is nothing wrong with possessions as long as they don't possess you. Well done to both of you.

Always had a soft spot for Brad as I come from the same part of London. When he was a kid prior to riding for Condor he was a customer of the bike shop I ran and even back then highly motivated, telling me aged 13 he was going to be a pro. I hope he's okay and has proper mates around him and really hope he gets out on the bike a bit more, it's kept me sane my adult life.

Nice one Katie, loved the chat, so wish I could have heard the interview the previous night.
I won't lie I felt disappointed when Bradley seemed to not be the athlete I thought he was anymore.
As fans we never really know what it takes to perform at that level, for so long. We know that it takes dedication etc, but we don't know what it actually takes or costs them in so many other respects!
I feel so happy to have heard the snippets of the interview and your chat with him, and I 100% agree with Bradley, it's about the person you
are in life that matters most.
    Thanks Bradley.

Yeah I think it’s easy for us to just see one side of it but I respect his so much for being so honest about how it all affected him. We need more honesty out there as we seem to live in a world of ‘perfect lives’ and that definitely isn’t the case.

I would have loved to be there listening to his insights into athletes and the mental issues that go with it.
There does seem to be a ideology that you always have to be riding balls out all the time. People forget what riding is all about is in life, it’s the journey that’s travelled and not the destination.

BW makes an interesting point about elite athletes living an unreal existence. Participants in team sports such as footballers and rugby players might find challenges and setbacks easier to deal with because there's a potential ready-made support group at hand. That's not the case in cycling, where teams have a different purpose.

I think Bradley could have gone on for a few more years as a pro cyclist but obviously he knew it was his time to retire. It's funny how so many ex pros hardly ride post career but many also get back into cyclist after a well deserved hiatus.

Because they ride 500+ miles a week... taper for tours are SEVENHUNDRED miles a week....
I get bored with 100 miles here and there in between trail runs.
Now just cycle 5 times that for months.
