If musician's and listener's life is devoted to Bach's music only it wouldn't have been wasted life. The whole concert is just one of his numerous gems and reflexive life's pause in Adagio demonstrates for what Bach was capable. It is clear, for instance in h-moll Messe, how he is able to unify his performing technical mastery, immense knowledge of music, his lifelong acquired craft with emotionality of the deepest kind and by that I mean ability to reach into human soul for something meaningful, to give us a sense of universality, of things much broader and bigger than we are. You can insert here whatever majestic entity you like but sense of universality that he achieved in his music transcends local and historical bounds. He represents the pinnacle of musical art, a composer whose music one can transcribe/arrange for any set of instruments and it would not lose its impact. That alone is quite amazing.
