- A Taste of the FUTURE for Bikes and Ebikes? Engwe P275 Pro Review
This is the Engwe P275 Pro electric bike. An amazingly clever electric bike that actually has automatic shifting gears from BAFANG. Paired with a torque sensor and a Bafang M200 mid-drive motor, is this the future of electric bikes? Let's find out.

Would you ride an automatic Ebike? Links to reviews of my favourite ebikes are in the description below.
Oh yeah. An auto would be awesome!
Oo ok looooo😊o😊llo lol ooooool😊@@kevinburke1325
No,not really!!! Seems very boring!!!😮
@@rexluminus9867 to you maybe.
@@rexluminus9867 I guess if you don't like going as fast as a roller coaster.
Thanks for that very honest review, squire. I'm an older guy who isn't too fussed about going too fast, and this bike is right up my street. The automatic gears, carbon belt, mid-drive motor, road/gravel compromise tyres - it's all good as far as I'm concerned. I love these reviews that you do. Solid information with a sense of humour. You're a top bloke!
Thanks a lot for watching. Yeah I really enjoyed the bike up to 16mph and I love the idea of it.
Your description for the sensor at 1:30 is incorrect. That sensor monitors the wheel speed for your LCD Display & does not have any effect on the hub shifting gears. The gear shifting takes place due to centrifugal force releasing shift pawls in the hub to engage the next level of the 3 available gears.
Came to write this. I have this bike by two weeks now, and it is absolutely stunning.
(Amo fare pausa pranzo a casa).
you are correct it needs a gear hold or a choice , you need a faster cadence for hills with a mid motor , has a slow cadence so a slog up the hills , not good if you are not fit or disabled in some way .
Not for me. I like to change gear when i want to. Peoples cadence is different for each rider and an auto takes that away.
Yeah it really could do with adjustable settings to have it shift sooner or later but it's a nice idea.
Wow this is impressive! Fantastic review my friend
Cheers! Yeah it's cool what they can do.
Would like to see an updated review if an unlock is forth coming...
Gr8 Vid as always.
Warning ⚠️
Hello, I am actually wrapping up this bike for return as I write this. Be aware the position is very uncomfortable as you are lining forward a lot and after a short ride you get a horrid pain in your neck. The automatic gear box was making a strange noise, engineers at Decathlon told me it was the gear box that needed replacement. Battery was at 50% after 6 miles, flat road at Boost mode, it will not do anywhere near the miles promised (271 miles) not even on level 1. Brakes front and rear are not sharp at all. All these TH-camrs are extremely bias with their reviews because they sale these bikes after reviewing them. Same experience with ADO Air 28, bias reviews.
Another excellent video. It's a fair review and it would irritate me nothing being able to choose my choice of gear. My only feedback is that this video was longer than needed as some point were repeteated. I like special fx analogy 👍
Cheers. And fair point re length. I think when I feel I've been a bit negative I need to remind people of the good points when I probably don't need to.
An excellent review of a very interesting ebike. The implemented combination of mid drive, automatic gears and torque sensor does seem somewhat counter-intuitive in that it makes you put in more effort than a normal ebike.
Thanks. Yeah it's an odd one. Really nice below 16 but not so nice above 20.
Pity they couldn't have incorporated something like the Sturmey Archer 3spd hub gears. Just to give you some sort of manual selection.
That would be cool
Weird!! I have just been for a bike round JLR, the Canal and up to the Concrete hill. So I come back home put TH-cam on and the first thing that pops up is your vid ( never seen your podcast before)and your cycling around Fordhouses past my house. So strange coincidence.. anway I've subscribed..good reviews!😊
Wow that's crazy 🤣👍
That called a synchronicity, and it's apparently the universe's way of communicating to you.

I married a 750 watt bafang mid drive to a 360 nuvinci hub, with autoshift, 10 years ago. Not a new idea…but work well together, because the ampdraw from the motor is minimized when starting from a standstill, because the hub shifts to the highest ratio automatically. 48 volt, 10 amp/hr battery is plenty to climb insane grades👍

I really like belt drive, since I do not like chain grease 😭👌🏽
Woah, auto-gear shift 😲🔥
I'd rather bright wheel rims than bright battery.
Could have been a lot better in design implementation
Yeah it's a cool idea. And yeah nice bright rims would be 👌👌
There are a few automatic gearboxes on the market now. The others i know of have adjustment on them. Two screws.. nothing on the bafang?
According to Engwe there's no adjustment 😥
@@e-VRC you at euro bike?
It's probably a no from me, 'cos I'm too lazy & worry about real pedaling. I gave that stuff up in my nineties!
Interesting review and well done at conveying how it felt to ride it.
Auto bikes are not new. I have a Shimano Steps Raleigh Strada which I purchased in 2017. It has a Di2 rear hub and can be ridden in manual or fully auto. The gear change, in auto, is dependant on speed and cadence and can be adjusted on the headset. In manual it's just a press up or down on a rocker switch.
Nice, just been reading about it. Cool system👍
Impressive range. Good use of mechanical advantage.
You can ride the P275 Pro faster if you move the speed sensor. The display will be worthless if you put a magnet on the padel crank but you fool the bike to assist you getting more speed. Check other videos on how it's done on most ebikes.
With a enviolo gearbox link with a gates carbon belt on a Bafang 510 mid motor ( 95Nm ) the most powerful legal 250 watt motor, would transform this Ebike. But it would cost more money.
Nearest Ebike to this specification is the Tenways AGO T with the Bafang M420 250watts 50/80 Nm and enviolo gearbox at 2,700 euros.
It’s obvious this Ebike at 32 kilos is underpowered with the Bafang M200 mid drive motor and 60 Nm of torque.
I understand the maximum legal 250 watts motor are being reviewed in the near future for higher watt motor to be available in the Uk .
I love your channel!
What would you say the best budget ebike is at the moment? For let's say around €1000.
Is it possible to add a throttle ?
@@Sen-ki- it should be but I don't remember if it had a throttle wire
it would be better if the tire is fatter or come with full suspension.
Good vid but what were they thinking with that battery placement ?😢
I think the orange makes it look weird but in practise it works pretty well. Helped by the adjustable saddle.
I would paint over that ugly ass orange 🍊 battery cover!!!😮.
It's not a really good sistem for me.😢.
I prefer to shift when I'm ready. My Lectric XP 3.0 has spoiled me regarding the amount of work I'm doing on the bike Ride. I like a throttle for easy no effort starts, and I can slow ghost pedal at speed of 28 mph to defeat the 20 mph limit for throttle limit. Nice idea though!
I think we have similar ideals 👍
If you can't rev the pedals for that instant kick, what's the point in having a torque sensor?
I have a TSDZ8 on my commute bike. It's responsive and so much fun!
@@pompeymonkey3271 it does kick in pretty fast from what I remember. It's the slow cadence whilst pedalling that I'm not a fan of.
I prefer self build, all shop bought seem restricted. Not sure about auto though. That loss of torque means more work for motor and eat through battery quicker.
you seem to shocked a bicycle that should be limited at 25km/h in support really does that.... maybe you should get the 45km version. I assume on a 45km version the gears will be setup differently. The enviolo automatiq allows you to manually shift if you want but also set it up not to 'stop' at 25km. hope bafang works on sounds like version one just misses alot on control to match what people want on a personal level.
I think it's a great concept, with some minor changes. Never been a big fan of mid-drive, but l can appreciate that the rear hub contains the "mechanicals". I would set it up so that, unlocked, you'd be cruising up to about 28 mph and then it would upshift to a higher gear.
That would probably necessitate two sets of gears. One for hill climbing and the other for top-end cruising.
In it's current form, it's pretty much useless to me. Autoshift may be the future, but this arrangement and the 250 watt motor seems rather anemic to me. Iwant to be able to maintain 35 mph without killing myself to get there.
Close, but no cigar.
Looks like this bike was made for the Boys in Lycra that go out on Sunday.
Sorry we don’t ride electric mopeds not that lazy
Nah they just block the roads .
The gears are bad when going uphill is on a heavy heavy gear when going uphill and you can change that.
Are u interested in test our ebike in Italy?
Are you going to do a review of the Fiido C11? Seems like a brilliant bike for the price.
They haven't said they want to send it. I have so many in boxes though I'm in no state to ask for it just yet 😬😬 but maybe a couple months down the line I could.
What were they thinking with that battery colour.. probably lose 90% of sales
Yeah it's a bit odd but luckily there is a plain black one.
Centrifugal?? Gears
It was forcing you to pedal at a slower rate than most mid-drive e-bikes are tuned to be efficient at.
This is exactly the reason why the 15.5mph limit is stupid.
and the exact reason why an increasing number of cyclists are ignoring it .
if you have any chains, its not the full potential of the full electric drive train, yep why would you have a motor then chain then gears to wheel. when you could just use hub wheel motors and pedal generator. only wires.
I just don't see myself buying a bike with a special frame integrated motor, and battery. I like the ability to replace mine with any mid drive motor and correct voltage battery and not being forced to pay double for a brand specific sized garbage that may not even be in production 5 years later. In 5 years I'm probably going to be upgrading to a solid state battery without buying a whole new bike.
I think this mid drive motor is pretty standard size but you may be right about the battery.
It seems like a great city bike to me. Maybe not so much if you don’t feel like putting the effort in.
Agreed. Little effort up to 16 but a lot of people want to go faster.
Automatic shifting wiggly power is nothing new. I can’t be the only one to remember the Autobike! :-) Years later Shimano had a system that did that too.
Just get a normal light cheap road bike if you're pedalling all the time.
Eh, not the same at All. I have both.
This concerns me in regards to safety and security. In the event that you NEED to get up and go in a hurry, it seems that this bike may not be very helpful! Especially in an event where you must speed away from an aggressor, be it canine, human, bear, whatever. There are also times in traffic when a burst of power is required, for example, making a left turn through an intersection of multiple lane flowing traffic. For these reasons, I believe I would swiftly realize this critical deficiency upon first use. There MUST be an accelerator that overrides its economic design. When this accelerator is used, the gear shifts should also adjust for increased torque and acceleration!!! I would suggest a thumb paddle for immediate access!
? Harley davidson do automatic transmission on their ebike, I found, if you stop pedalling it changes down, which means your little legs wiz around to keep up. J.
It's made by enviolo. But they cheaped out and Harley didn't include the cadence adjustment in their bike software, so it's done via an app. One of many reasons these failed on sales.
not sure what they did but thats not normal. if they used the enviolo automatiq controlled by for example the bosh system it should never change peddle speed but stay constant. so it never should move down in gears if you stop peddling but still go say 20km/h. I use it on a riese and muller ebike and its a very comfy ride did about 13000+ in last 18months on it. This bafang sounds more like a cheap version of the rohlof 14e.
The most annoying thing about receiving this particular e-bike, the ENGWE P275, is that the handlebar stem screw, that’s locking the stem that you need to turn to the correct direction during assembly, is a real bitch to unscrew. It’s almost impossible to loosen it with the small 4mm allen key included in the box. Don’t bother, you’ll just damage the screw head, and then need to resort to drilling it out, and replacing it, which is God awful to do. Best to use a T-handle driver, so you can put in the effort of loosening it with enough torque
Making sure that the front tyre is on with zero brake rubbing also takes some trial and error
Once that’s finished, the rest of the bike is child’s play to assemble, anyone can do it
Good luck saling bikes fellow
Going up hill looked a chore- buy a light peddle bike instead.
nice looking bike…😂 looks like an old swiss military bike with an orange tornister for the 1957 “ sturmgewehr” - gun..😂
Great review but the bike is forcing ridiculously slow cadence on the rider. You sounded quite breathless with such high pedal resistance. It would probably ruin your knees in the long term.
Yeah I was really annoying. I said I was like being on a gyp stepper on level 1 but I cut it as the vid was too long.
agreed nice that bafang now adds a gearing system but they should really add some software to set a 'stable' or at least semi stable peddle speed its important but that would be easier with say 6 or 8 gears inside or a fully continuous gear system. Hope they will work on that since we need more cvt like systems. cadence should be able to be set by preference say between 50 and 100. most people would be best at 65 or 70... i ride on 65 myself.
the engwe models is confusing which is the engine pro 2 the ep 2.0.or the engine x lol.

What have you heard?
Having spent the last few days looking at ebike reviews I've reached a striking conclusion
No reviewer ever says 'don't buy this bike, buy bike' x' instead.
I can't help wondering if this might be down to the ever present 'affiliate links' in video description. 😂.
That doesn't make sense since surely bike X will have affiliate links too?
I was waiting for you to say 'apart from you'. Did I not say the combination doesn't work and if you want to go fast easy and legal, check out the Hey bike ec-1?
Also I've said 'don't buy this bike' about the Hidoes something or other and the Bezior something or other.
I want to sit at 15 mph not pedalling
Had to turn this off at 4:30. Because the load of bollocks is insane.
First off, it's a paid ad, so disclose it.
Second, the future of e-bikes? Mate, have you been under a rock for the past 20 years? Automatic gears have been a thing on mechanical bikes for ages. They never worked well, but they existed. Now, the automated hubs have motors, so you actually have a choice of gears instead of being forced into a weird cadence as an addition to the automatic features. Look into things like Alfine, Rohloff, 3x3, or the most common, Enviolo.
Third, the Gates Belt Drive is mostly found on geared bikes. It's just that the gears are actually in the hub (surprise) or a gearbox in the middle. Again, this has been around for 10+ years.
Fourth, because the shitty Bafang finally decided to come 10 years closer to everyone else, it doesn't mean it's a leap into the future. It's more like an awakening from the stalemate they've been in for 20 years.
These pseudo bike reviews from people who literally clearly know nothing about the tech industry or bikes.
Why the fuck youtube served me this?
Well done for knowing lots about bikes. About the future...you realise it was meant to be a question to make people discuss? Like you're doing but in a nicer way. Also by turning off when you did you missed the bit where I moan about it and say that I didn't really like it. Stupid move if it's an ad. They sent the bike for review and unlike some brands Engwe have always been fine with me being negative when the bike deserves it.
I reviewed the Hidoes B10 negatively and they asked me to take down the video. I didn't. And of course I didn't convince anyone to buy it.
It's a review about a bike on the budget (albeit expensive end of budget) end of the spectrum at the end of the day. I'm comparing it to budget ebikes. And in the budget world, brands like Bafang are better than the no name stuff you get on other budget bikes. This auto system was interesting to me hence the title question that made you click. But trust me it wasn't a positive review and I expect to make no affiliate sales. But the link is there just in case.
I watch other reviews of bikes and the amount of reviewers that are obviously just trying to sell the bike no matter what really pisses me off. Probably more than it annoys you. Because I'm actually losing out on the opportunity to review bikes because of it and those other reviewers will also make more commission than me. But I feel for long term success, being honest is the best policy.
So yeah, I may not be a bike expert (guilty) but I know a decent amount about cheapo bikes. I'll continue to (try to) use titles that make people click as long as the video backs it up so it's not just click bait. If you don't like it that's ok. Just ask TH-cam to hide me from you. But don't accuse me of making ads without watching the whole video and knowing nothing about the channel. Who am I kidding, this is the internet. Accuse me as much as you like 😅😂. Nice bike but the laws made it worthless as an e-bike.
Nope, 3 gears won't do, even on an electric. And the yellow bar is awfull, it screams "Still this e-bike"
🤔 Hmm, an e-bike is supposed to help, not hinder, which is what this bike seems to do. I'm afraid I'd spend my hard-earned money on something else. 🙂↔️👎
It helps up to 15 but yeah if you want to go over 20 it's a bit of a slog unlike on The EC1 I mentioned.
We desperately need the law to be changed to allow motor assistance up to 20mph.
25 is better. 😂
@user-un9lx4kp6u I say 20 for three reasons: -
1) It allows ecyclists to keep up with normal pushbikes. (Not pro or serious riders obviously.)
2) It is significantly safer than 15mph. And
3) There is a realistic chance of getting the law changed to 20mph if enough people get behind it. There is no chance of getting it changed to 35mph.
There is, of course, the option of having a second category or class of ebike. This is where 35mph might come into play along with throttle control (rather than pedal assist).

Trouble is, none of these UK bikes will carry a heavy person.
You mean the motors are too weak? Or the frames?
sure they can my riese and muller takes 160kg / 350lbs it uses a 85nm motor. both bosch and bafang say their motors are 250watts but really the cx and m400 line are more 600-700watts. they are really speed limited to 25km/h not watts in reality as he found out most european 'aimed' ebikes really do limit with a small curve starting at 25km. Its a bicycle with assistance not a scooter wannabe. Max weight is mostly a issue not for the frame but peddles, seat and wheels really...
@@dutchbicyclerides-ss1ko the frame, wheels and pedals are absolutely fine. The issue is in UK we have very big hills, not like Holland. If a heavy rider attempts a big hill with just 250w, they will not reach the top without a huge amount of pedal force. I agree that your bikes may be sufficient in a flat area but certainly not in parts of UK, therefore making them unusable.
Kind regards

Readolds 753 master frame builder.
@@g7eit I won't argue too much here just telling you what some brands switch out between the 'normal' and 'heavy rider' versions at times but it depends on the frame to begin with. People mostly assume its the frame and in many cases its not the weakest point. I do agree that the m200 here is not as strong as the m400 line both rated at 250watts but really the m400 is way more and we all know it. The limit is on speed not watts. Also feel this gearing system needs work to really get it smooth and over a bigger speed range 3 doesn't sound like enough to me. On hills and wind i do agree esp. a fully automatic system is more at home in some areas of the world or cities but i also find many people don't factor in the dutch winds (what we call the dutch mountains) if you look at where the watts go and esp. our more upright riding style you will see its effects are almost as bad as some hills. But if hills where my daily drive i would probably go with a rohloff 14e. But its great we are getting more options here i think the motor control + smart gearing is a area that can grow much in the next few years.
You mean they wont carry Americans 😂😂
He's killed with police
Ewwwww there's the police as if scared , but I don't have to worry this bike is street legal , so why the fear of police then it must be engrained and they just be attacking you on another level , I always feel intimidated by police and hate crime and don't commit it
