This film will take you into the world of silence or the big blue like a virus which drives men to risk their lives every day, diving to dangerous depths searching for the “blood of the sea”, an incomparable jewel: the red coral.
In the south of the island of Corsica in France, at the mouths of Bonifacio, the red blood coral grows, the most beautiful in the world and the most crystalline.
It has fascinated men for centuries. Because of its red colour and its mineral skeleton it was for long compared to the blood of the mythological gorgon killed by Perseus.
In this film you will dive with a real coral fisherman, who risks his life every day by descending to depths of more than 80 metres.
You will participate live in the gathering of red coral from Corsica.
You will be as near the coral fishermen as you ever could be. They live daily with anguish, disappointment and fear, but also passion and joy which they experience when they find these marvels of nature.
This is a veritable adventure on land and in the depth of the sea, which takes you to Italy, to Torre del Greco near Naples, where the red branches are cut, carved and sculptured. Thereafter they are exported to the rest of the world for making jewelry.
You will then discover the secrets of jeweler FRED and his creations.

great video presentation on corral and i learned and gained a healthy appreciate for this fabulous natural material and resource ~ also, wow, each collection dive being limit to 15 minutes of going down for specimen recovery, but requires 150 minutes of going up return and recovery time to avoid the fatal bends ~ thank you to Patrick Voillot ~

To allow the greatest chance for regenerating the coral population in general for future generations & to allow significant growth above 60 m (to increase diver safety), the Corsican gov't should enact a minimum 10-yr moratorium on red coral harvesting. Due to red coral's slow growth rate, the moratorium must be long enough to achieve the desired effect. The gov't would have to fairly compensate current professional divers during that period, vigorously police the areas of concern & create stiff penalties for ignoring the moratorium, etc. However, another potential benefit, might be a dramatic escalation of red coral prices, which the gov't could tap via a tax that would be used to mitigate the compensation & policing costs' impact on Island budgets & to also support ecological/research programs.

It's obvious that the footage was compiled from clips shot in the 80's and 90's. And is wholly sponsored by the jewelry industry, and the angry (old families) still stinging from the ban on harvesting. I was in Corsica several years ago, the lack of all sea life, kelp, fish and seahorse was tragic. It's the same group of people that believe the planet is ours to harvest. This "documentary" is no more than a compilation of footage glorifying the jewelry industry and the egos of the
      Locals from that region.

Really classless. it ends up looking like a piece of acrylic. leave it alone please - it really doesn’t belong to you

I've never understood why people just don't wear burlap sacks or burqas.
Sarcasm aside, I do find it disturbing to what lengths people will go to gain things. The coral is pretty but it's not so extraordinary when a durable imitation can be made. I feel the same way about flawless gemstones, as they often look like glass after they're cut and polished. Big whoop.

The story of jewelry is as old as the story of man. It's an interesting one. I agree with your ideals but we are talking about humanity, which has also practiced large scale self slaughter through warfare and small scale destruction of the self through dangerous activities. And so, killing one another, smoking and eating dangerous substances, and wearing jewelry seem to be here to stay
