This film leads you along the trail of amber in the Dominican Republic.
This substance, and the insect fossils it contains, became famous thanks to the media publicity given to the film « Jurassic Park ».
In the southwest of the island villagers who play at being miners, extract larimar - a blue stone with white volutes - from narrow galleries lacking in oxygen.
We will follow one of these men who risks his life daily, descending into deep pits to find sufficient larimar to enable him to support his family.
Tired of this dangerous life, he decides to leave for the middle of the country to search for amber.
We follow him down into deep tunnels dug with pickaxes and metal rods, not knowing when one enters whether one will come out alive.
After long searches, the precious resin fossil will come out of the earth in front of your eyes. In a hurry to profit from his discovery, the man goes to collectors who will give him a good price.
To the frenzied rhythms of carnivals and Caribbean music, the amber passes from hand to hand, some pieces selling for several thousand pesos.
There is still a long journey to be made before reaching the Dominican artists who can carve the most beautiful and creative pieces.
The exceptional pieces will reach the jeweler Tournaire in Place Vendôme, Paris who will adorn some of his creations with them.

Amber is a beautiful stone, though i come from a place where we don't mine it but need to use our eyes to the best to spot em.
winterstorm over Denmark and the baltic sea and for me an 2 hour ferry and it's just walking down the beaches and there will always be something there.
usually in the 5-10gr size but have found one piece at 108gr (unpolished)
today though with the extensive dredging of sand from the ocean bottom between Denmark, Germany and Poland there comes insane quantities of amber from this as amber is a very bad material for construction so they do everything to sort it out of the sand.
but then, noting like finding the golden orange "shiny" yourself and getting a nice trip down the beach at the same time though can be cold...

The insect filled amber is impressive and I prefer it to Baltic amber so often lacking insects.

So basically this is one big advert to encourage us all to go exploit our environment and people . Amber like many things in nature is beautiful but I am not interested in exploiting others for it . If it is washed up by the seas and collected that hopefully puts no one in danger or our environment , a much gentler way to live WITH nature , not against it

the red comes from oxidation on the surface of the amber, if you look closely on the bottom of the stone, its not flat. if the jeweler sanded the piece flat, it would most likely loose the red.
