    K490 is pretty much 3V with an extra 3% tungsten added, and that kinda tracks with what you guys found-- Very tough like 3V, improved edge retention , but not much harder to sharpen. The Vanadium is close, the Molybdenum is close, the Chromium is close, the carbon is higher to make more carbides with the extra Tungsten. I should probably see the whole video before I comment, but to me K490 looks more like a less stain resistant M390. They have removed some chromium and added a little tungsten. The magic in K390 is the high vanadium content, and K490 is just not comparable in that regard.

    • @D00MTR33
      @D00MTR33 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It'll have less wear resistance but way more toughness than k390. K490 is more similar to M4, it has a bit more Cr for better corrosion resistance but less Tungsten (though tungsten is so heavy that it barely makes a difference plus it's not a good carbide former) and Moly. It'll be more corrosion resistant and have higher toughness but slightly lower wear resistance than M4. Sounds pretty good in my book. For a 6 inch "survival"/heavy duty knife k490 is a much better choice than k390. For a smaller fixed blade or folder k390 is probably better because it'll have better wear resistance. But if you bring it really thin (5-10 thou bte) k490 might be a better choice if you're not used to thin grinds since it can take more abuse.
      I've been wanting to try k490 for years but so far this is the first knife in it and I'm not sure this is the form factor I want to try it in.

      Hi A.W. Sorry to hear about your experience. The only time we see motor malfunction is if the unit is plugged into the wrong power supply. For example a version intended for the US but used in Europe (even with a converter) will fail almost immediately. It's important to buy the sharpener in the place you plan to use it. That being said I am confident we will replace your machine again if it is experiencing any sort of malfunction. Every item we make has a 3 year warranty.

      But the motor and everything else is absolute intact. I live in Germany and bought it here. There is a converter in the connection cable. I think because of our power supply that has 230V/50Hz. Like nearly everywhere in Europe. And this converter went off in smoke. Do you think it's possible to only get a new connection cable with the converter in it? I don't like to send the whole machine for warranty, because only the converter in the connection cable is defect.

      Personality id go with k490 since it's unique. K490 should have a bit better edge retention and 3V will have a bit higher toughness. But both are still solid in the other department. So pick from what's more important to you, a little more wear resistance but less toughness or the other way around.

And can you use it more or less as a small belt grinder because I'm scared it would be a bit underpowered for these things.

    Yet again gentleman another very interesting piece especially as it was a lionsteel number K390 has a special place in my brain cavity but as for K490 you can never beat a new twist and I would highly agree with what you said it seems as if they have spat this out as it’s a little bit easier on the sharpening side of things. You never know perhaps they’re getting sued by a ever increasing amount of bald knife collecting people after trying to get the edge back on a k390 hahaha easiest way to find start asking slap heads if they have been at a sharpening bench with k390 and suddenly a pile of human hair all over the place 😂 hope that you both are in good health and may it always stay that way. Ohh yeah I forgot to say you pair of lunatics hahaha i love’s the antics you never fail to make this old fart laugh till the next one lads 😘👍🏼

    This knife has grown on me.i resisted it at first because for a year I had TRC Apocalypse. I'm glad I did pull the trigger and quit thinking about it. It's very good! I'm happy you made a video and LionSteel made this T6! For me it takes the place of Becker BK2 which I never had. I like the one piece handle. I appreciate the whole design more now than ever.

  • @Cid_1
    @Cid_1 ปีที่แล้ว

    Will you test the newer CPM 3V version also since that's the "Normal version" now? And the K490 was only available in 1000 or 2000 pieces (per color). The new T6 should be a bit tougher, compared to K490, CPM 4V & Vanadis 4 Extra (around 4% Vanadium). K390 is more comparable with CPM 10V & Vanadis 8 (with around 10% Vanadium).

    Your statement at 5:26 is off. K490 is said to have ALMOST as much edge holding as K390, but it almost TWICE as much toughness. It's supposed to be 3V levels of tough with just under K390 edge holding. It's very close to CPM-10V. Almost a perfect survival knife.

    I think I prefer the CPM 4v Spyderco Province for a factory knife that’s similar to this Lionsteel, but it was sadly discontinued recently. You might still be able to find them, but they’re not making anymore for now.
    Hope they bring it back in MagnaCut or something. Aaaand I’m on other another Spyderco tangent…
    Anyway, both the Lionsteel and Spyderco are somewhat special for being production fixed blade knives in super steels like K490 and 4V. Interesting to compare them to each other and more normal knives.

      Both places harboring excellent knife manufacturers that the people running Spyderco have built long lasting and fruitful business relationships with.
      I have a lot of respect for that, personally.
      Spyderco’s Taiwan knives can give any other factory a run for their money. The Province that I mentioned was an excellently made bowie knife pushing the boundaries of super steels in production fixed blades. The Spyderco Zoomer made in Taiwan is another example: A full convex 20cv production bushcraft knife? Nothing else competes with its quality in production knives.
      I want to see what the DBK boys think of that Dutch designed knife (The Zoomer).
