@@golDroger88it’s not 800 excellent. $400 I could see being a reasonable price. For the money they are asking - you can buy an excellent dedicated chopper, an excellent bushcraft (mostly wood working) knife, a great axe, a silky saw, and a fire rod & sharpener to go along with everything. Hell, you could commission a custom trapper-style knife in your steel of choice for less than this thing.
ER makes a great knife, but they’ve been asking stupid prices for a couple decades now. It’s probably a big part of why they aren’t more popular in North America.
@@golDroger88and I’m not trying to dump on ER in any way. There’s very little to find fault with other than the price. Probably should point out that their handle ergos are something you need to try. Some of their stuff is a joy to hold, but other stuff (like their shrapnel model) can hit your grip on an uncomfortable way. Either way, it’s something all fixed blade fans should experience at least once.

I've been an ER fan for ages. These knives are built for military and Police special units in Italy, Austria, Chile, etc, etc. and they just...work! Expensive, for sure. Definitely 'niche' stuff. The design you are loving is a decade or more old, too, so they know their stuff. I found them because my knife collecting was mostly military at first. I have fun finding unusual uses for them, too. Their Corvo is ending production: it's an odd knife built for a specific Chilean army fighting style. The tip hooks downwards and I can't find a better knife for breezing through strapping on frozen hay bales. (I swear to the knife gods it's true!) Their knives are special. Check out their take on the kukhri; it's instructional.

The G.B. hatchet is better at chopping and the Gunny or Aurora is better at everything else.
If i follow your logic i should buy a Ferrari Supercar (Superfast) and John Deere Tractor (Super pulling) and not a Navara which can do a little bit of both (drive not so slow in a variety of terrains, can pull enough for my uses and i like how i looks)?
a prandi axe is cheaper than a GB by over half and they hold their edges insanely well. GB's chip like no tomorrow

@@davidolds4617 I make passive income. Haven't worked a day in 5 years. Yet, i still agree with the original poster. Why spend $600 on this knife when you can spend $170 on a small forest axe, $200 on a quality custom knife of your choice (bark river, lt wright, william collins etc), and still have $230 left over for other quality gear? Just because you have the money, doesn't mean you should blow through it. Quality vs. quantity.
Gransfors is a meh axe, get a better one.
This knife is clearly amazing and you're paying for research and development, something most knife makers don't do.

In a survival situation I would want a decent size knife like that to chop. I'm never going to have an ax with me when I randomly find myself stuck. Unless I was already going camping
just to revamp this video a bit: I alway hated Extrema Ratio knives, when I was a "simple" user (not so simple, because I was a survival instructor years ago). Anyway, since I became a knives maker, I hate ER knives even more... 😅
They have a great heat treatment process for sure, but speaking about usability I really do not agree with their choices. It is better to have a 30 bucks machete, plus a good edc knive.. this way I can save tons of bucks, to go around the word and effectively use my knives
i really like Extrema Ratio! I got the Fulcrum, Fulcrum S, Task J and the KS, and i got to say they are extremely good!
And the shape makes it really good at digging as well

I'm a huge fan of ER, as some of the folders they make (/made) are fantastic [and some folders and fixed blades they make are just a waste of material ... whatsoever(?/!) ... [ER has some shitty products as well; besides having some fantastic and timeless products]. I'm still a huge fan of ER.
Besides the Suppressor dagger, I've never owned any other ER fixed blade. Most of the ER-knives I own are folders. The fixed blades mostly have that strange kinda scales made of some kinda polymer and they often look weird ... technocratic. Scales on the Suppressor look different and are extremely grippy, for sure.
I do not care about spending 600 to 800 € for a knife, therefore the Selvans is in my price range --- to be honest, I'll still go on with my Fällkniven F1X fixed blade and my Spyderco UKPK, as both knives are tough and legal to carry in my country.

Bark Rivers knives have been slipping in quality for me these last few years. LT Wright’s knives have never disappointed me...always Damm near perfect...
Also you guys didn’t really do a dig test. The spade type tip to the selvans is good for pretty much anything including being used as a small shovel which is pretty useful in survival situations. You could even use this for food prep if you really wanted to

So I was actually looking for a similar size/shape/use knife as this. To do chopping, knife jobs, and general wood working/carving. I almost bought a bark river JX5 or bark river kalahari camp BUT INSTEAD I ended up getting a Fox cutlery Tekking Axe! It's a sweet little axe that I personally think would out chop, out carve, not hold an edge longer cause it's 12c27 or 1.4116 steel (mine is an older 12c27), but be more convenient for carrying and lighter than this knife. Coldsteel is probably working on another knife to compete. I watched their Extrema Ratio video where the were hanging weights off of their folder vs an Extrema Ratio. I got bored with it at 4 minutes and 21 seconds and purchased an Extrema Ratio RAO II . Once they hit 550 pounds hanging off of both knives I was content to order the knife I like better. Thank you Coldsteel for helping me on purchasing am Extrema Ratio.

I use to be guilty of this but know I’m buying knives I never would have in the past and learning how close minded I was. The only issue I have with some of these knives is price, especially Extrema Ratio.

There is no tip at this knife... why not buying a km 3000 or 2000 it’s even N695 nit just N690 for much less money without a piss handle made by people never working with wood before..... even your sharpness test is a joke... I use N695 with a KM3000 and a work sharp it’s like shaping your ass off

Guys, of course the knife has a good sharpness after that use. It is N690 steel that is definitely a good steel. Does not always have to be CPM 3V....
