    Screws and nails are totally different hardnesses. Nails are often very soft so they can bend as the wood shifts, and screws are much harder so they will usually snap long before they bend ...

    • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally agree with everything you said, it's all true, however I had a small nail cut, with a Knipex Cobolt cutter and not only, it was harder to cut than any screw I've tried, but also it managed to damage the edge of the cutter. Not much, it was a tine roll. I just want to add, that it's rare, but there are some nails, that their steel, is made as hard and tough as screws, if not more than that!!

    • @shawnpepin7890
      @shawnpepin7890 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@greekveteran2715 yes, especially old cut nails, and specialty hardened nails (concrete nails and such). And I’m pretty sure what they were cutting wasn’t a screw or a nail, it looked like one of those bent wire nails that are meant to hold down fence or wire to wood, which would definitely be a hardened steel (the bend and then harden the steel to make sure that it doesn’t bent anymore while hammering into the wood ) either way, for a knife channel, and steel nerds, their actual practical knowledge outside of knife metallurgy seems limited... although they are speaking their second language, so I am being critical... they should definitely buy a big box of nails and use the same ones consistently if they actually want to have scientific results, but I’m guessing that true science is not this channels main focus, it mostly seems like a comedy channel that gives Mickey and excuse to take his shirt of on the regular lol

    I have 4 CPK knives. I have used the choppers to destroy a lot of stuff and they still look great, only minor damage to the edge was caused by hitting cement. I used the field knife to field dress several white tailed deer and it was impressive. I dressed 3 deer in a day and it still shaved arm hair afterwards. They’re not cheap but when compared to Bark River or CRK they provide more knife for the money.

    A little info about Carothers: Nathan is a machinist by trade and a knife craftsman with a high level of metallurgy knowledge. His wife Jo participates in knife competitions. They have collaborated with many other competitors and knife design experts to create many different knives. This one appears to be a field knife 2, but there are many others that would be worth testing. He has done some knives in D2 (with proprietary heat treat) and CPM 4V. I believe he is working with Magnacut now as well.
    He is a scientist with an uncompromising commitment to quality. His knives are among the best in the world.

Bark River will actually gas light you even if you provide photo evidence. The best they will do is grind the edge down, sharpen it and send you the same shi.hty knife back. Bark River refuse to admit they make a faulty knife because they make in batches. Anyway, you guys finally did it. Respect.

    Can’t help but notice y’all haven’t accounted for the difference in edge profiles between the two knives you’re comparing. The bravo 1 is a convex giving it even more resistance, while the 3V delta is a Sabre grind with a much thinner blade edge. Judging by your results it seems that the Carothers knife wouldn’t have a ding on it if it had a convex grind, while the bark river would be relatively even more destroyed if it had a thinner edge profile. Regardless of this comparison oversight, very interesting test and results.

  • @TheScrawnyLumberjack
    @TheScrawnyLumberjack ปีที่แล้ว

    This is like comparing apples to oranges really. Yes it’s the same steel and different heat treatments. However barkriver usually does zero convex and the Carothers blade is saber ground with a secondary bevel. If it has a decent behind the edge thickness and 20 degrees perside bevel it’s gonna be significantly more robust than the barkriver.

    From my understanding, Carothers orders 3V with a specific recipe from the manufacturer that is slightly different from the regular 3V that is better for the delta protocol. I would ask Nathan on that. If you have never seen his “destruction” videos, you should. he is a lot tougher on his knives than you guys. PS, how is that manscape demo video coming along? • @greekveteran2715
      @greekveteran2715 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I guess not, it's just the heat treatment, that is always better on smaller batches, rather than factory made knives, that come in big numbers. Also V edge, might be less tough on the very edge, but provides better edge stabity behind the edge, than a (Bark River) zero edge does.

    • @xdd7049
      @xdd7049 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greekveteran2715 Wrong, Barry is right. Here's a direct quote from Nathan (youtube won't allow the link): 'These terms "custom" "production" "hand made" "mid tech" are not well defined so rather than try to define what we are by some fuzzy definition I prefer to look at the connotations of the meanings and see where we fit. I don't like the term "Mid tech" for us because it is usually applied to a low volume custom maker who does a production run by outsourcing the components of a knife and putting them together. It implies faster cheaper with less attention to detail. They're usually waterjet and the scales are usually something basic like slab with round over and the F&F usually isn't great. That's not us.
      When you figure that I have the steel made and rolled to my specs and our heat treat is very not-off-the-shelf and we're making everything in house, I'd argue that we have more direct control over every aspect of our work than most low volume "custom" makers and the attributes of a "custom knife" such as attention to detail and pursuit of excellence apply to our work.
      Production implies high volumes and a streamlined product and process optimized for that high volume rather than a focus on excellence.
      I would define us as semi custom or high end low volume production. We're certainly a production shop (we were a machine shop before we got big into knives) so we should probably be over in the manufacturer's sub but I started out small and my forum fit best here at first though it should probably be moved over at this point. *shrug*'

  • @cmc2909
    @cmc2909 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you sharpen the CPK to the same angle as the Bark River? At same edge angle, the is less supporting material for convex grind due to geometry, making it easier to slice but weaker.

    • @xdd7049
      @xdd7049 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're probably confusing convex with concave (hollow grind). The convex will always have MORE supporting material (i.e. thicker bte) than a V grind. You don't have to believe me, just draw it on a paper and see for yourself. Or, of course, read some expert opinions. The heat treat on the CPK (the delta protocol) is exceptional (prob the best there is) and the BRK is average, at best - that's where the difference is.

    I think the ultimate combo of two knifes would be something like a Bravo 1 in 61-62 HRC Magnacut, combined with a larger survival knife in Delta 3V. Would you agree?

    The thing about Delta HT is premature edge dulling. 'Survive! Knives' the company has moved away from it because they've tested 3V relentlessly and noticed dulling faster than normal. Delta is optimized for brick break etc but it will have a loss at edge retention. Depending on what you want out of the knife Delta may or may not be the best HT for the knife you want. Given that it's still 3V so it will still proform well no matter what.

      That's what Survive claims but I don't think we have any good reason to believe that, ESPECIALLY given the fact that they're known liars and scam artists running a ponzi scheme with their "business".
      Whether the 3v is regular industry standard HT or the delta HT, the underlying composition of the steel is the same.
      Perhaps given that the D3V has reduced secondary carbide formation it in deed has less abrasion resistance but that only matters when using it in scenarios where you're cutting lots of abrasive materials like cardboard or dirty rope. And even then, it's definitely not going to be noticeable to the user. It's not like the difference between say soft 3cr13 or soft 440A and hard K390, S110v, or 15v, that's for sure!
      But since the majority of work the average person is doing will dull the edge through edge deformation rather than abrasive wear, the D3V is going to give the user better overall edge retention than a non D3V HT will.
      Cliff Stamp even has videos showing how the user cannot really decipher the difference between vastly different steels when it comes to edge retention if they're not cutting the exact same thing over and over. The reason for this is that the edge deformation vastly overshadows the difference in steel composition, hence a knife which holds it's shape better (like delta 3v) lasts longer and is more noticeable to the user.

    So these are no niche knives. Sometimes while out and trying to camp, folks have put nails or screws in trees (especially older established camp sites), and the wood grows around it. Or, you can slip/deflect into dirt/rocks with your knife. I love delta 3v, great heat treat. Took cpm 3v from die performance to cutlery optimized performance. I have a Keffeler chopper in delta 3v, damn that thing cuts.

    V edge is more stable than convex. Of course if the angle on the edge is the same on both knives, than the only you can compare is edge retention. I would convex the v-edge and repeat the test.

      Yup, Bark River probably is thinner behind the edge, than the Carother here was. Also "V" edge even though flat, provide more stability behind the edge, than the full convex of the Bark River does. That's why the Carother, took damage on the very edge and the Bark River didn't. (Weight and length of the knife, also was a factor on that) Convex edge provides, better edge stability, but full convex zero edge, trades a bit of overall toughness, for extra slicing ability!

    • @huejanus5505
      @huejanus5505 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@greekveteran2715 Not sure about that. I’ve read that a convex edge has up to 400% more metal behind the edge than a v edge, that strengthens (supports) the apex.

    • @xdd7049
      @xdd7049 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@greekveteran2715 No, the Bark River is NOT thinner bte. That's not how it works and that's not the reason the CPK took less damage. It's all in the heat treatment - an exceptional one that CPK has and a shitty one that BRK has. Simple as that.
