Amazing how at 37 and riddled with some injuries, he managed to pull off a 100 point season. Don't think that could ever happen in today's game. Go Joe!
@@andrewrichardson8905 it was a hybrid of the two. He had a violent traditional wrister in his early days with the old wood sticks and as his game and technology evolved so did his release. He had a excellent snap shot too but his lethal shot from the prime of his career until retirement was a body weight lunging style wrist shot that looks a bit like a snapshot. It's his release that was so hard for goalies to deal with (from everything I've heard and read over the years from his opponents.
It's funny, when I was a kid everything was about Sakic and Sundin. They were gods. I never heard a single bad word about Sakic in those days. Every kid where I grew up was either a leafs fan or an avalanche fan which always made me naively think they were huge rivals as a kid. Looking back I'm not sure why but as an extremely biased leaf fan as a kid, Sakic was literally the only player from another team that I liked. This video really took me back and got the nostalgia to kick in pretty hard!
As a Red Wings fan, despite the Avs-Wings rivalry, I still always really liked Sakic, got his curve on my stick and pretended I could shoot like Joe in my backyard. I just didn't tell anyone! 😂
Sakic was a stud. I was at western Michigan university cheering on the red wings, and that guy tore us up. Hats off to Sakic and loved listening to the Gary Thorne calls at the time. What a great hockey time.
Old video new comment and all that... It's crazy how he played a large part of his career through the DPE and still had a ridiculous career points total. Despite widely being considered an all time great I still think he's underrated. Definitely top 10 all time in my eyes. It's also probably not a coincidence that the seasons that he was healthy and had his best totals they won the Cup both times. This guy was more important to a championship team than Gretzky could ever hope to be and the Oilers winning without him in 1990 proves that...
Hockey guy doing a year by year analysis of a great player. Reminds me of those times we used to compare the stats on the back of O'Pee Chee cards in grade 2-4. Lost so many great hockey cards playing that stupid card flip game against the side of our school. Oh the humanity!
Thanks for this tribute to an extraordinary hockey player. I remember one game in Quebec city with my dad, Nordiques agains Flyers. A bad year. Joe scrored 3 times with assists and it was a tie 6-6! After his thierd goal we thrown him Nordiques' cushions they gave us at the entrance, like hats (so I lost my souovenir...) :) I'm proud to have his shirt and he was chosen the player figure of the Nordiques Nation.
His goal in the gold medal game at the 2002 Olympics is my favourite of his. As soon as he broke free across the blue line I knew he would score with that beauty of a wrist shot.
Joe lost 2 good years due of the lock outs. you could add another 60 goals minimum. what a shame!! when Joe gave the cup to Ray, i cried! i HATED Boston has much i hated Nordiques but man i had the most respect for Ray
Sakic was one of the best of his time and the absolute best player in the world at a time it mattered most (to me at least) in the gold medal game in Salt Lake, 2002.
Joe Sakic is class personified. He only got in one fight as a youngster and handing the cup to bourque was legendary. He's a great captain respected by everybody. He's a great playmaker. I was about 11 (the Cup is almost always the week of my birthday in fact, same with the NBA Finals of course) and I had only been into hockey for at the most a few years but I was well aware by this time how respected and revered Ray Bourque was and I probably saw on hockey cards how long his career had been and I knew he had not won and was one of those guys that would go down as he was so good but never won. But I remember watching that finals where the Avs won with him and cheering them on despite them not really being my favorite team, it was just so hard not to cheer for the Avs even though they had won without Ray not too long ago, which the first time they won was like the first year I watched the Cup finals. But I remember being so happy that they won for Ray and I remember watching him skate around with the cup and being so happy for him. That is one of my earliest and best memories I have when it comes to sports in general, not just hockey. That moment may just be one of the defining moments in my early years as a hockey fan as to why I care now and am here watching your videos on pretty much a daily basis. Even going back through old ones, as this is from September 2018 and its May 2019 and I have the Western Finals on in the background as I type this between the Sharks and Blues.
no mention of the 2002 olympics? he was the best player there. speaking of which, perhaps tommy salo deserves a video. but about joe, the man is pure class. always has been. top 20 player all time and we were proud to have him in swift current for his junior career.
I got to see Joe Sakic with about the best seats I ever had, probably 5 rows up from the ice. It was like he was 2 steps faster than everyone else and the puck was glued to his stick. It was against the Devils in NJ, and I also watch the great Scott Stevens cough up the puck to Joe Sakic, who proceeded to blast the puck right by Marty Brodeur, who didn't even move. He was a great player.
Would love to see a Career of Joe Sakic as GM video, Also excited to hopefully be seeing the how good is it series and the more full team overviews as we get closer to the season :)
as a ex habs fan for near 35 years, i HATED, and i mean HATED Nordiques to no end, the wars we had with my mom ( my father and I being Habs fan and my mom Nordiques fan ) are legendary. but man did i ever respected Joe and jealous that the he played for them and not the Habs.
great gob man , love it , Joe is my favorit player even i know he play center, i play rw but Joe is awesome player on Teemu Selane or Jaromir Jagr level , in two years Colorado will win Stanley Cup anyway ,
I didn't know who he was and I wanted to know what the documentary was about and you did a great job of explaining his career I don't even need to see the documentary now LOL kidding now I really want to see it
My opinion- You need a Sakic Jersey. Information I found out recently. 1986 age 17 he was playing for Swift Current Broncos. Riding on a bus with his teammates the bus crashed due to bad weather, driver lost control. Four of his teammates were killed. He never talked about it to this day. That is fate I guess.. great person. Would love to met him, and sign my Sakic Jersey. ..
I always loved Joe Sakic. To me, once he actually had a few pieces around him, he proved to be a fantastic pivotal player. Joe was always pure class and came to play.
Thx for the vid Shannon! I'm a huge fan of sakic. As an Avs fan it's tough to say that Yzerman is the best #19 ever... But it's barely true. I will always argue for sakic either way. Theyre both damn fine GMs too. Sakic wins that one tho
Joe Sakic and Peter Forsberg and the Avs were idols of my childhood. The Canucks(my fav team) were trash and watching the Avs vs Detroit are part of my formitive years as a fan of hockey. Forsberg is on of my GOATs.
Joe Sakic was a great player! He had a tip during Canada's lost in the shootout against the Czech Republic goaltender Dominik Hasek in the 1998 Nagano Olympics. Sakic was not in that game due to an injury. Team Canada should have kept its line of communications open. What if Sakic's tip went through to Team Canada's bench back then?
In 10 years the video you make (The Career of Joe Sakic: GM Edition) is going to hopefully be weirdly parallel. I can see it now...went from "Bad GM, can't build a team" to "built a team that the league emulated and defined hockey in the 20s".
I really wanted the Leafs to draft him, I was crushed, knew they'd blown it. Then I heard the Leafs were dealing with Quebec, I hoped Sakic was coming back, then crushed again.
Amazing how at 37 and riddled with some injuries, he managed to pull off a 100 point season. Don't think that could ever happen in today's game. Go Joe!
He is the oldest player to get 100.
He's the second oldest. The oldest is Gordie Howe in 68-69 at 40 years old, when he got 103 points with the red wings
PonAdidas Gordie Howe was 41.
John Bucyk, Jean Ratelle, Gretzky 35.
@@frloopr Yeah that is true, it was also right after expansion and way before my time.
GO SUPER JOE!!!
Sakic immediately passing the Cup to Bourque was beautiful. True leader. Bourque, another guy I love.
He had the best wrist shot in NHL history.
seconded. that thing was lethal.
Snap shot not a true wrister. There’s a difference.
@@andrewrichardson8905 it was a hybrid of the two. He had a violent traditional wrister in his early days with the old wood sticks and as his game and technology evolved so did his release. There have been some great ones but it's hard to argue against Sakic having the best. He was such an awesome player

Madison Bonderud reminds me of my time growing up in Oakville Ontario. we were all Leafs fans but one friend was an Avs fan cuz of Patrick Roy
60,000! 55,000 in about a year! Your hard work earned every one, plus those to come. Congratulations. Proud of you.
As a Red Wings fan, despite the Avs-Wings rivalry, I still always really liked Sakic, got his curve on my stick and pretended I could shoot like Joe in my backyard. I just didn't tell anyone! 😂
He also won a gold medal in the 2002 Olympics
And the Next World/Canada Cup.
For some reason the goal he scored against Team USA has forever been ingrained in my mind. I was sad Canada won but the Sakic goal was so nice.
And was awarded Olympic games MVP. He was an absolute monster in the finals, truly amazing!
Got the privilege to meet him. He was so kinda and welcoming.
I love hockey and I'm sad I've only been a fan for like 5 years because apparently I missed Sakic scoring 100 points at age 37. Damn.
Thanks again!
As a long time Wings fan, I always respected Sakic and always loved when we played them. Good video.
I never thought you would do a Sakic video for all the right reasons.
Sakic was a stud. I was at western Michigan university cheering on the red wings, and that guy tore us up. Hats off to Sakic and loved listening to the Gary Thorne calls at the time. What a great hockey time.

I kind of had a feeling you’d do either forsberg or Sakic for your next career video. Can’t go wrong with Burnaby Joe
Devlin Hustwait bet you he makes a Forsberg video by the end of the month
I was upvote #19. Perfection.
My grandpa was his coach when he was playing in Burnaby wayyy back when, pretty cool

Sakic- no complaints, rewarded with 2 stanley cups,
Lindros lot of whining, no cups.
Karma, baby.
It's possible he was a "whiner" because his team thought that not dying made him a mentally weak player...
His goal in the gold medal game at the 2002 Olympics is my favourite of his. As soon as he broke free across the blue line I knew he would score with that beauty of a wrist shot.
Burnaby Joe---and a Canuck killer :( One of the all time great,s with one of the greatest releases and wrist shots in the game!

Joe Sakic! What a great hockey career he had!
That 03-04 team is my biggest what if in hockey.
I've met Joe. He was busy. He was signing all of our stuff. He didn't have to, but he was.

No Bobby Clarke yet

Burnaby Joe
