    MTL were my fav team. When Roy went to COL, they were my fav team. When he retired, I became a homer (TOR). Roy shaped my fandom. I have over 50 cards of his. Best goalie ever!

    Patrick Roy was the reason I started loving hockey.... As a kid i used to set up goal posts and throw a bouncy ball against the wall and "save it" while watching the game... I credit him with my love of the game and for that he's my favorite player :)

    I don't really care what the stats/records indicate, Patrick Roy is the greatest goalie of all time.
    Quick edit: playing road hockey back in the 80s-90s all I ever wanted to be was goalie. Only Mom yelling at me to come in for dinner would get me out of that net.

    • @Alexander-Hatfield
      @Alexander-Hatfield 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The stats and records show that Patrick Roy is one of the most dominant playoff performers in the history of north American professional sports and is therefore the greatest. His only rivals in that regard are Michael Jordan and Tom Brady as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'll fist fight anybody who claims otherwise!
      Marty stuck around forever and racked up lots of regular season stats, but nobody comes close to Roy regarding playoffs. Plus he beat Marty head to head in the finals and collected another Conn Smyth even though he was far past his prime. He's simply the greatest.

      @coady beastly conn smythe means something but at the sametime not always the best player wins it. I thought grant fuhr was awesone in edmonton when he won 5 cups but he never got a conn symthe becaue he played with messier gretzky. If u win u win and broduer could of won a conn smythe anytime.
      Hasek besides when he went to detroit never had a decent team. Patrick Roy alway had good teams his whole career. When montreal was finally getting bad he got traded to a jauggernaut team in colorado. Sakic Forberg Kamensky conn smythe winnner claude lemeuix, tangay, drury hejduk, on defene ozolinsh krupp, black, adam foot, ray bourque. Omg this guy had a fucking jauggauranut team in colorado. Who did hasek have michael peca lmao. Hasek had a bunch of grinder and mucker compared to roy and he single handedly carried that team to almost a stanly cup.
      What u going to say now about roy 93 team? Denis savard, mark recchi, a young john leclair, vincent damphoue, brain bellows. kirk muller, mike kean and the list goes on and on and that montreal team wasnt talented as the colorado team roy had but hasek never even had a team as talented not even close to roys 93 team.
      Give me a break. Dominik hasek kicks his ass anytime. He beat him on a duel at the olympics when roy had a bunch of hall of famers and hasek had like 5 or 6 nhlers on his team in 98 nagano. And he beat him in game 7 when hasek was on detroit and roy was in colorado head to head again

I absolutely loved watching the Wings destroy him in that blowout in Montreal and loved that 2002 game 7 when he showboated and dropped the puck into his net in that blowout as well. I just hated how damn good he was, he was a different animal in the playoffs but a bit of an egomaniacal buffoon as well. I will say, he IS the best goaltender of all-time

  • @dpause10
    @dpause10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Roy was just an ultra-massive competitor with the mental strength of a mountain. In my opinion, one of his most uncanny abilities was his bounce back from a bad game. He rarely gave up 2 bad games in a row, which is certainly why the Avs won in 2001. In fact, the best thing that could happen for Roy was for a journalist to write a disparaging article about him. That's usually all it took for him to turn it up a couple of notches and run the opponent out of town.
    Mind you Roy was also active during the golden era of goaltending. With the likes of Hasek, Belfour and Brodeur, he got to compete with some of the finest goaltenders in the history of the league.

    I was 12 during the 1993 playoffs. Up until that, I just enjoyed hockey and didnt have a team or player.
    As I watched the first round between the Nordiques, I began to notice the Montreal goalie. During the series, I got hooked on Patrick Roy and the Canadiens. Been a dedicated supporter since those 1993 playoffs.
    Then I added the Avalanche after his trade and enjoyed 2 more Stanley Cups and supported the Avs until my intetest in them faded after Roy retired.
    It was not a good feeling when he retired after the 2003 playoffs. Especially when others like Brodeur, Hasek, Joseph, Belfour played into their 40s. Couldve been more years for Roy. But I enjoyed 11 of his years tremendously🤴🤴🤴

    With Roenick being my favorite player during this time period, I can honestly say I wasn't a fan of Roy's. But his ranking as one of, if not, the best goalies to ever play the game cannot be denied.

    A couple of my favorite Roy moments were the statue of liberty goal and him getting bandaged up after the fight with Vernon. DRW fan here if you couldn't guess. In all seriousness though, he was a brutal opponent. The Wings seemed to be the better team so many times but then they still had to beat Roy, and just couldn't some years. He has the personality on the ice that you love if he's on your team and hate if he isn't. He's in the rotation of best goalie of all time, and for what I would want is probably the best.
    PATrick, PATrick, PATrick! :)

    Agree completely. To me Roy is similar to Michael Jordan in that they both changed the way the game was played, both made the game more exciting than it was before them, both were extremely competitive and got even better during playoffs, both started in 1984, both played in the greatest era in my opinion, both are the greatest of all time in what they did.

    At the hot trio Roy-Hasek-Brodeur he was least likeable as a person, but oh man he looked huge on the net (not just physically). He had biggest heart and character of all of them and that's what makes him the winner. To me still Hasek is the best goalie on my Era, because in my country it was difficult to see lot of NHL games and what Hasek did in Nagano was amazing. To me it was disappointed that you didn't mention that thing when you did Hasek video. Greatest international tournament by any goalie ever, he basically won the gold.

    Everything you said is exactly how I try to explain to others why Roy was the best. That 94 season with his appendix issue I remember he watched Montreal and Boston play from the hospital. Ron Tugnut played for the Habs. Montreal was hoping Ron would play Boston like he did before when he was with Quebec, where he had that 72 shot or saves win. (Must of been painful for you to watch as a Bruins fan?!) Anyways After Ron and the Habs lost that game Patrick Roy came back very next came with a 60 or 61 save performance winning 2 to 1 in OT. Crazy part was, Patrick was playing with an appendix that could burst at any time. Unreal!!!
    PS Thx for putting this out here. Still cant believe you are a Bruins fan and Giving Roy the GOAT status. Lol

    No one wanted to be a goalie when I played either. Roy was my favorite player but I started hockey as a skater. I started late in age and was told I would probably never be very good. And my first season was definitely horrible. I sucked. During the off-season I went and played in a beginner league and would practice in my driveway for hours. I built some confidence and skill. First game in my second season I started the game as a center. My coach was not very confident in me. My first shift I stole the puck at center, skated across the blue line passed the defense and shot it glove high. I scored. I skated back to the bench and my coach came up to me with a shocked look on his face. “What did you do during the off-season?” Lol. Next shift I stood in the slot got a good pass and buried it. Had a great first period but the score was 3-2 for the other team. Our goalie quit. He refused to play anymore. My coach asked if anyone would play goalie. And I was the only one to raise my hand. He looked at me and laughed. I was the smallest guy on the team, by far. I was tiny. But he had no one else. I came in and shut the other team out for the rest of the game. I just emulated what I saw Roy do during games… it worked well. I became the starter from there and played the entire season with pads that were too big for me. Lol.
    I played goalie for most of time from then on, except in games when we would play our backup I would play forward. I stopped playing in goalie in high school when the league wouldn’t allow me to play both goalie and forward. So I chose forward because I would have been the backup.

    Patrick Roy is indeed one of the very best goalies of all times. A guarantee Top 5# goalie - if not arguably THE best NHL goalie. 18 NHL seasons.
    4-time Stanley Cup champion - 1986, 1993, 1996 & 2001, 3x Conn Smythe Trophy (Play-off MVP) - 1986, 1993 & 2001, 3x Vezina Trophy (Best goalie) - 1989, 1990 & 1992,
    5x William M. Jennings Trophy - 1987, 1988, 1989, 1992 & 2002. BOTH Canadaiens & Avalanche retired 33#.
    HOWEVER, what is sad for his career legacy is his lack of International championship competition. Patrick Roy only played ONCE, the 1998 Olympics = No medal.
    He was an elite level goalie who time & time again took his teams to championship level, but representing team Canada in IIHF World Championships, Olympics or World Cup or Canada Cup was just not something he cared for. And there are several seasons where he could have done so. Here;
    # IIHF World Championships: 1987 in Austerich, 1994 in Italy, 1998 in Swizerland and 2003 in Finland. / 1994 Canada won the Gold and as well in 2003 =
    2 Gold medals missed and the 1994 Team Canada was STACKED with tallent.
    # Olympic Games: 2002 / 2002 Canada won the Gold medal for the first time in over 50 years !!!
    # World Cup: 1996 / Canada won the Silver medal.
    # Canada Cup: 1987 & 1991 / Canada won the Gold medal in both.
    He would in 2002 or 2003 made it to become an exclusive member of the TRIPLE GOLD CLUB !!!
