He was pissed so he told everyone to back the hell off, flipped another puck over, I caught it and he gave me a big smile and a wink, then bagged 2 goals including the game winner. My thoughts... Steve Moore should have been penalized and suspended for the hit on Naslund. Did Brad May get suspended for saying "There's definitely a bounty on his head..."? If not, he should have been. Some of the things other players said before that game should have put the NHL on high alert and they should have been more responsible as a league handing out fines and suspensions. Bertuzzi's actions were criminal and he should have been suspended for more games (if not outright banned from the NHL). At that point in the game, Moore should not have been on the ice. Maybe they thought that after the Cooke fight it was over, but since Moore won that fight they should have known that Vancouver had not gotten their pound of flesh yet and would still be out for it. Finally, the on ice referees should have been suspended. They had plenty of time during the play, going on, that led to the Bertuzzi actions to blow the whistle and hand out misconducts. They failed in their duties. The entire series of incidents sickens me.

As someone who coached hockey in Sudbury and coached a team who played against one of Todd's teams when he was on the verge of "stardom" I have a different view of him. He and his family were a group of obnoxious and overbearing a-holes who cared about no one other than Todd. He was a dirty player back then and when one of my players cleanly hit him, his father raced to the dressing room area to "let me know" who Todd was and how dare I send one of my goons to try and hurt him. I am not surprised the Steve Moore incident happened. That is who Todd is. I hated the day he was drafted by the Islanders and I was ready to throw a party when they traded him.
Wow, thanks for sharing this insight. The only thing that really bothered me about the Moore incident is that Bert only really seemed to care how the lawsuits and suspensions were affecting him, nothing for Moore's family. Also, Moore was a shitty guy too. Not that he deserved that, though, but both were assholes.

Bertuzzi single handedly changed the interference rules in front of the net, by initializing the hit on defencemen to make space for himself. Against Minnesota in the playoffs the Canucks got burned because they kept moving out of position to try to make big hits. After he signed that big 5X5 contract he started floating to the point where fans were losing their minds. You'd see him leave the bench, do a little skate, and then slowly skate back to the bench; while fans were screaming at him for being lazy.
To me, the intent behind the attack should incur a suspension equal to the number of games that Moore was injured, which equates to a permanent suspension.
The Canucks handled the buildup to the Moore incident terribly, but Moore should have served a suspension. When their fans actually held a rally in GM Place (as it was called then) parking lot in support of Bertuzzi, I lost all respect for that team and their fans, and it's never returned.
I remember that game vividly. I was 7 years old, my dad knew something bad was about to happen when the Canucks went down big time in the first. He sent me to bed, but from my doorway i could down the hall to the TV. Being from Vancouver of course the Canucks were my team and Bertuzzi my favourite player. The only poster I had in my room was his poster, he was a hero for me as a child. It took me some time to come to terms with how this man I idolized could do something so brutal-especially having watched it live. 20 years later I still feel a little betrayed. After that game I disavowed my allegiance to the Canucks and Bertuzzi and started idolizing the Flames and Iginla, that's the gravity that it had on me.
Controversial man. Good video. Thanks Shannon. As a boy I was a massive toss Bertuzzi fan, that night shattered my adolescent image of him. As a lifelong player and wings fan, my feelings toward him remain nearly unsorted, but certainly harmed and undermined. I am not the one who needs to have an opinion tho, honestly, and he was a helluva player sometimes
He was an elite power forward for about 5-6yrs. Boy, was the West Coast Express fun to watch. Btw, we could not win a Stanley Cup playing the style we played during that era. We were a high octane run-and-gun team that played little to no defense. I don't think Cloutier should be fully blamed for our lack of playoff success...
WCE were fantastic to watch and lit a fire in this city, but even then you didn't have to be a detective to figure out a one line team won't get you the Cup. However if this hadn't happened, and we let the Sedins while the WCE was still in action, it would have been a different story maybe.
There was a few things not normally mentioned that helped lead into the Moore tragedy - non-suspension on Moore for the hit on Naslund - Bettman purposely attending the next Avs-Nucks game, forcing both teams to play nice and allowing tempers to simmer for longer. - granato not benching Moore during the blowout to protect him when it was clear Canucks was after blood. I've watched enough hockey too remember people doing the opposite of what I listed to help diffuse hostile situations.
@@andrew6815 just wasn't surprising he didn't get more than what he did based on past incidents. No way would the Union ever allow a player to be banned for life for an on ice incident where no on dies.

Coming from an Avs fan this is amusing. Bet you were happy enough to have Claude Lemieux play with barely slaps on the wrist by the league. Admit that Steve Moore was just as dirty as Bert. Bert had a rotten, selfish attitude for years after the incident that I couldn't stand, but he did eventually change. But don't think that Bertuzzi was somehow so different than some other players, especially ones that played on your favorite team.

@@MDK2_RadioAnyone's career can end at any time. Bertuzzi didn't intend to hurt him that bad. There have been a million knockouts in NHL history. Luckily most guys get up.
One thing I’d like to add about Bertuzzi in 05-06; he took the costly penalty for team Canada at the Olympics that led to them being beaten by Russia. That he was even selected was mind boggling (instead of Crosby).
What Bertuzzi did to Moore was inexcusable. If it were off the ice, he’d have been in jail. His crocodile tears and half-hazard apology afterward never had me fooled. If he really was sorry, he’d have at least donated to help Steve Moore pay for the treatments after the injury. Bertuzzi never should’ve been reinstated after that incident.
Criticize him for the events we witnessed by all means, and rightfully so, but don't go assuming things you could never know like "crying crocodile tears". That's just fueled out of passion and anger for the event, which I get, but it's not a reasonable accusation.
The 1997-2007 era of Vancouver Canucks with jerseys and colors will IMO always be THE best they ever had. 2nd is the Black/Yellow/Red Skate era from late 80's to 1996. The boring colors of now sucks in comparisson. Love that jersey THG wears from 2005-2007.
I will be honest, Bertuzzi is the only player I have ever "hated" in my history as an NHL fan. I understand that he wasn't the only person responsible for the Moore incident, but he was the person who "pulled the trigger", and I still haven't forgiven him for that.
@@mr.brenman2132 Why? What is the point in forgiving him? It isn't like I am ever going to meet him in real life, so my opinion of him will never make a difference.
The incident with Moore definitely should have ended his career. When he signed in Anaheim it made me angry and sick that the organization thought it was a good idea.
Nah. Mike Tyson can continue a boxing career after a Rape conviction but Bertuzzi can't continue to play hockey after doing something that's been done in hockey a million times? He shouldn't have cheap shotted the guy but he got unlucky. It was revenge but I'm sure he didn't intend to hurt the guy that bad and end his career. There have been a million cheap shots and a million dangerous plays but you only care about this one because of the outcome.
That was a dirty hit by Moore on Naslund elbow targeting the head, causing a concussion........ Canucks got away from their game chasing retribution, leading to suspension
Except the NHL reviewed it and determined it was a clean hit not needing supplemental punishment. You can agree with their choice or or not, but it's not like the league ignored it.
Got his autograph at the Ducks old practice facility. Even just him sitting their watching the youth kids playing you could tell he was down about something, and at the time I was too young to have been able to remember the Moore incident.
I had the weird experience watching him play for my wings in the second half of his career. It always seemed to me that he did hold back whenever there was a scrum. But maybe not. He benefited from playing with the likes of Datsyuk and Zetterberg. Maybe more games suspended would have given it a different feel. Not sure.
No, he definitely held back. His play as a power forward was much more mature, and definitely more reserved when he was with the Wings. He was a good locker room guy too then, and finally got his attitude straightened out as a Red Wing. It was a long time coming, but I think he got his redemption. There were years though before where he was a selfish, gross man who really couldn't admit the harm he caused because he was so focused on how his own career was damaged.
Say what you want about one incident bertuzzi was a great player prior to and maybe if the nhl did something about the naslund hit bertuzzi wouldn't have done anything.
Not making excuses, but again had the nhl suspended Moore for his hit on naslund burtuzzi would have not had to take matters into his own hands. Remember, the nhl was a whole different league compared to now.
@@brandonmartin9498 I do agree with that. Or even if he got a penalty in the game. But still, the Canucks way overreacted. I think Shannon's onto something, that they felt the season slipping away and maybe latched onto this as a way to focus their frustrations.
After the game where Moore hit Naslund the Province newspaper printed a "Days until next Avs encounter" countdown every edition until the fateful Bertuzzi-Moore incident. Really sums up the bloodlust in Van for Moore prior to the Bertuzzi incident.
Just to add some details for other viewers. Bertuzzi ended up having to pay an undisclosed settlement to Steve Moore for the criminal case. And I remember Brian Burke at the time as a Anaheim Ducks GM and former GM of Canucks, signed Bertuzzi for 1 year 4 million or 2 year 8 million I forgot. But to me it was a sign that Burke got Bertuzzi’s back and it was a way to help Bertuzzi get back on his feet after the settlement with Moore. Which I find it nice of Burke. Also fun fact a lot of Bertuzzi’s injuries are herniated disc related. He had like back pains and stuff. Herniated discs are no joke.
i think its okay to say remember moore and to say that bertuzzi was a good player because both statements hold weight honestly was never a fan of the guy after that hit but no one can say he was just an enforcer bc he did so much more then that
Surprised the rule changes weren't mentioned. They clearly had an impact on his production. It wasn't all purely the hit. His skating was always criticized.
As a big Kings fan I have the same kinda feeling that Bertuzzi fans have when I think about Marty McSorley. It seems unfair to define a career by a mistake in most cases, but there are some things that are so bad that it SHOULD define you. McSorley and Bertuzzi are two of those dudes.
I was at the remembrance event/game with Bertuzzi on the ice last year or the previous year, he was cheered in Vancouver. I think its positive memories around him still in Vancouver. I have Avs fans in Colorado and they don't seem to take it as hard as Avs fans outside of Colorado.
Bertuzzi also got a big fat contract in 2004 and he stopped hitting. Moore only fought cooke. Moore grabbed naslund in that game, just before bert punched him. Not defending it but it set him off. His mix of hitting and soft hands in the wce days was incredible. I admired his hitting myself and he stopped doing it before moore. He should have legally freighttrained moore instead.
Was surreal to see him a Calgary Flame for the one season after being disliked as a Vancouver Canuck for many years. Anaheim bought out the second year of his contract before signing with Calgary.

The only other on ice incident that I remember this vividly so many years later, is Marty Mcsorely & Donald Brashear. It's still not the same. This was something else.
Hey Shannon. I love your content. Just a quick correction. The hit on Moore came on March 8, 2004. I think the initial hit on Naslund may have been on Feb 16.
I wasn’t watching hockey at the time of the Moore hit, but I remember when he signed with the wings the second time my cousin didn’t like that he was there because of it. So it is amazing that he never got to live any of that down years later.
I played poker the night after the incident with some of his family members and they said he felt horrible about it. It's too bad that's what he'll be remembered for.
One of my favourite Bertuzzi stories is when the kid with cancer asked him to get a hattrick vs. Detroit, and he did. He was never the same player after the Moore incident, but once in awhile you'd see flashes of brilliance.
i remember the HBO 24/7 special between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs, and one of the glaring omissions was anything related to Todd Bertuzzi. the series was arguably getting stale at that point after the excitement of the initial installment between Pittsburgh and Washington, and i think the fact that Bertuzzi got like three seconds of airtime kinda cemented the fact that show wasn't what it was anymore.
There's an awesome goal he scored back when he wore the number 27 for vancouver But I can't seem to find it anywhere besides the intro to nhl 99 on ps1
Random question here, but I’d thought I’d ask because you seem to be able to watch ALL games throughout the league. In tried calling Bally Sports to see if I could buy a package through them but they said no. So….how can I watch LA KINGS games while living in Arizona?
Thanks for the videos! I have to tell a story, as silly as it may be. During the season where Auld was starting, and we are at a bar watching the PPV game. It was another Canucks loss. The network allowed you to text in a comment, and it just may come up on the screen. My friends texted in something stupid, something about vaggies which didn't come up. In the early 2000's The Hockey News ran an article profiling both Bertuzzi and Iginla: who will go down as the best Power Forward of their era? They slanted it pretty heavily to Bertuzzi. Funny how things worked out.
Moore should of actually been suspended a few games before the naslund cheap shot on martin st Louis Its on the nhl as much as anyone for not disciplining a 4th liner attempting to take out multiple star players
Lets not pretend that Moore would have had a long profitable career without the cowardly Bertuzzi attack, either though. Moore was a depth forward with little NHL talent except for causing trouble. An issue I have with the video is you make it sound like the Bertuzzi-Moore incident (Mar 8, 2004 in Denver) took place the very next game after the Moore-Naslund hit (Feb 16, 2004 in Vancouver). There was a game in between the two (Mar 3, 2004 in Denver) where Bettman was reportedly in attendance the teams were given warnings, and the game was a 5-5 tie that went off with minimal shenanigans, Moore didn't fight in that one for the record. So I'm not sure what the NHL should've done in hindsight; suspend Bertuzzi and May for every game against the Avs until the next season or playoffs for their comments? More realistically Moore should've gotten at least a game or two for the head shot of Naslund which may have quelled the Canucks' fury, but then again different league back then with different standards.

Cowardly hit from behind, no respect for the game. Should have been banned for life. The NHL bungled this big time by allowing Vancouver to do exactly what they said they were going to do.
The fact he ever played again is a stain on the NHL that can't come out.

Amazing player. Sucks ehat happened to him
As someone who coached hockey in Sudbury and coached a team who played against one of Todd's teams when he was on the verge of "stardom" I have a different view of him.
Ever wonder why Yzerman cut him loose? A young solid forward, the type every team needs?

I see Tage Thompson and think of Bert, not as similair but just in the powerful sense with swift underrated hands...during his prime anyway
Quoting Dan Russel from Sports Talk radio CKNW 98, he said that Naslund called Moore's hit on him as a clean hit!
Thanks to Barry Trotz for complaining to the League about it!
West Coast Express podcast also covers the Moore incident really good, as-well as Brian Burkes book. For anyone who interested.
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check that out
That pod was excellent - wish there was more content like this
To me, the intent behind the attack should incur a suspension equal to the number of games that Moore was injured, which equates to a permanent suspension.
Steve Moore wasn't a good NHL player. He was looking for a pay day.
The team didn't have enough/talent to win It all. You certainly weren't winning a cup with Cloutier
WCE were fantastic to watch and lit a fire in this city, but even then you didn't have to be a detective to figure out a one line team won't get you the Cup. However if this hadn't happened, and we let the Sedins while the WCE was still in action, it would have been a different story maybe.
Make one on Brian Boyle
There was a few things not normally mentioned that helped lead into the Moore tragedy
- non-suspension on Moore for the hit on Naslund
- Bettman purposely attending the next Avs-Nucks game, forcing both teams to play nice and allowing tempers to simmer for longer.
- granato not benching Moore during the blowout to protect him when it was clear Canucks was after blood.
I've watched enough hockey too remember people doing the opposite of what I listed to help diffuse hostile situations.
Todd Bertuzzi is a disgrace to hockey. He should never have been allowed to play hockey again after what he did to Steve Moore.

Utter nonsense.
One thing I’d like to add about Bertuzzi in 05-06; he took the costly penalty for team Canada at the Olympics that led to them being beaten by Russia. That he was even selected was mind boggling (instead of Crosby).
Let's not forget how much of a beast Worrell was for the Avalanche during that sucker punch game 😎
Worrell was ready to kill everyone in the building.
He paid Steve Moore tens of millions. I can't remember how much exactly, but Moore was suing him for like $60 million.
@@matthewjudge3763 i’ve never heard of Bertuzzi paying him anything. Where did you hear that?

Canucks got away from their game chasing retribution, leading to suspension
Except the NHL reviewed it and determined it was a clean hit not needing supplemental punishment. You can agree with their choice or or not, but it's not like the league ignored it.
Got his autograph at the Ducks old practice facility. Even just him sitting their watching the youth kids playing you could tell he was down about something, and at the time I was too young to have been able to remember the Moore incident.
Isles fan. I was initially so disappointed when they traded Bertuzzi. After the Steve Moore incident, those feelings vanished
Do you own red wings?
Say what you want about one incident bertuzzi was a great player prior to and maybe if the nhl did something about the naslund hit bertuzzi wouldn't have done anything.
He absolutely deserves to remembered for that act of goonery more than his play. But he was a good player before then.
After the Steve Moore incident, I have absolutely no respect for this goon.
After the game where Moore hit Naslund the Province newspaper printed a "Days until next Avs encounter" countdown every edition until the fateful Bertuzzi-Moore incident.
Really sums up the bloodlust in Van for Moore prior to the Bertuzzi incident.
Perhaps hockey isn't life? Perhaps attach your frustrations to something else? Fans and media have a role in this thing as well.
Had it been today's game Moore would've easily gotten suspended 3-5 games. Don't tell me his hit on Naslund was clean because it wasn't.

Clearly injuries were a huge part. He basically missed two seasons between back and neck surgery. After that, he was already 32.

Hey Shannon. I love your content. Just a quick correction. The hit on Moore came on March 8, 2004. I think the initial hit on Naslund may have been on Feb 16.
Bertuzzi was almost traded to Montreal for Theodore. Fun to think about.
I wasn’t watching hockey at the time of the Moore hit, but I remember when he signed with the wings the second time my cousin didn’t like that he was there because of it. So it is amazing that he never got to live any of that down years later.
Why? Start forgiving more.
The only player I can think of that should have actually been thrown out of the league.
i remember the HBO 24/7 special between the Red Wings and the Maple Leafs, and one of the glaring omissions was anything related to Todd Bertuzzi. the series was arguably getting stale at that point after the excitement of the initial installment between Pittsburgh and Washington, and i think the fact that Bertuzzi got like three seconds of airtime kinda cemented the fact that show wasn't what it was anymore.

It's nice that he had a long profitable career, unlike Steve Moore.
Lets not pretend that Moore would have had a long profitable career without the cowardly Bertuzzi attack, either though. Moore was a depth forward with little NHL talent except for causing trouble. He would have been back down in the AHL in a year or two. Not excusing Bertuzzi's behavior, or his shit attitude, but nothing he did or didn't do would have given Moore a good career.

Very good video and very well covered
To this day, Todd Bertuzzi is my most hated player all-time. Glad he never won a Cup.
