    • @troin3925
      @troin3925 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think mother! and David Lynch films are like nightmares in their own unique ways. Eraserhead is more like a subconscious nightmare and while mother! is less abstract, it's, in my opinion, one of the best depictions of stress, anxiety and rage I've seen in media (especially the former two).

    YMS, did you think it handed Jennifer Lawrence's character well? I know some people felt very uncomfortable the way the film ultimately treats her character. I personally really loved it and found it very effective. It added a great sense of tragedy to the film.

    • @russellhunter363
      @russellhunter363 6 ปีที่แล้ว +41

      The parts towards the end were making me very overwhelmed, but I think that was the point: the put yourself in Jennifer Lawrence's character's shoes. It was very effective and it gave a real sense of dread and claustrophobia.

    • @Nanancay
      @Nanancay 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I felt that dread and claustrophobia all the way through those final scenes, it was so suffocating and it made both me and my friend uncomfortable. For the first time, I didn't run home being scared of the dark from a horror movie, but scared of the nightmarish hell that they portrayed. If shit like that happened to me, I'd definitely end up like Lawrence's character.

    • @SephonDK
      @SephonDK 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Problem is that she had no character whatsoever. She was a near blank slate, which doesn't work well for something that starts out wanting to be a psychological drama. It only serves the movie in the end when it goes apeshit but I never really felt sorry for her, because at the beginning she was a wet confused towel and in the end she wasn't intended to be human.

    I think it's interesting that RLM and Adam had largely the same opinion of the individual elements of Mother! but had such wildly different takes on their relative importance. Jay seemed really put off by the ham-fisted religious imagery, enough so that it seemed to totally nullify the good elements of the film for him. Adam, by contrast, recognizes that element but enjoyed everything else so much he barely registered it.

    What I LOVE about Adam's quickies (At least the ones he likes, for the most part), is that he gives you JUST enough info to go out, and enjoy it for yourself. Whether or not you actually check it out, that's on you. And when somebody finally, honestly says "Look, this may not be the best or up to your tastes, but it's absolutely worth the time to watch, and here's why without spoiling it."... Well, that means a lot more than some generic fuckin' "Watch Mojo - Top Ten" video, any day.

    I really wish Aronofsky had kept his fucking mouth shut about Mother! I never watched his interviews about the film so I went in totally blind and I loved it. I wasn't raised religious and almost everyone I knew who saw the film did not pick up on the religious themes either. Aronofsky has pigeon-holed his own movie by constantly feeling the need to explain it to people, thus completely removing the individual experience that a film like this is supposed to provide.
    I didn't pick up on any of the religious allegories until the "Communion" scene, and I wasn't taken aback by it because I realized by myself, not because Darren was yelling in my ear about it.

    yes yes YES
    Adam, you NAILED it when you said “wow this is awesome! Very disturbing and had a few things that will make people uncomfortable” (2:05). I mean, the ending gets pretty insane in terms of the production involved, and I was having a great time, my mouth agape, as Kristen Wiig executed people isis style with a gun.
    However, in my opinion the symbolism WAS “hamfisted and overkill” (2:35)! I don’t know, maybe your conscious is a completely godless entity, but I have cursory knowledge of Christianity and when when Javier Bardem’s character was ‘banishing’ not Adam and Eve from the room when they broke the jewel I WAS ROLLING MY EYES. Then he just literally goes thru the biblical story, one son kills the other, Javier Bardem’s ‘new book’ gets people riled up and insane. By God it was the most obvious biblical metaphor since Passion of the Christ.
    In my opinion, it works totally despite this fact. They really go there with people literally eating the Jesus-metaphor baby. I was giddy that a professional studio literally greenlit these scenes. And the ending actually had a profound and interesting insight into the circular nature of life.
    Also yes this film exposed Jennifer Lawrence cuz she hasn’t been since 2019 in writing of this. Maybe Winter’s Bone was a fluke but you’re totally right when you say you “can’t separate the character from the actor” (3:20).

    Thank you Adam for helping me develop my critical thinking 🙂 I've been looking at a lot of reviews for one particular movie and you're one of the few people that actually went in depth and tried to remove yourself from your lens and worldview. Just wanted to give some love, hope you see this

    While listening to all the praise you gave Mother! I was thinking to myself: 'What a shame it's Jennifer Lawrence.' I'm never able to see her as anything but herself, the actress. It breaks immersion. Seems I'm not the only one.

    I fucking loved "mother!". The message was very strong and the visuals are amazing regardless of what you think of the overall plot. Watching the house descend into chaos was breathtaking and holy shit that baby scene. Also I think its so hard to separate actors from their characters because none of the characters have names or much personality either which, while intended, made it hard to see them as characters.

      fennicute The relationship between humans, god, and nature. Also an interpretation of the Bible.

    • @CharlieTooHuman
      @CharlieTooHuman 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, there was a biblical allegory and metaphor for nature throughout the movie, but I think it has deeper themes that focus on creation vs. destruction... I think it's also drawing comparisons between the worship of gods and the worship of artists/musicians/poets/writers/celebrities...What does it mean to create something? Creation cannot exist without the "inspiration" which in turn means that no single person or being can create on their own, whether it is a mere mortal or a god... They need someone or something to inspire them, which implies that gods aren't alone prior to their creations. On a micro scale, we view the artist as the sole proprietor of his work, but there is so much more to creation that we never fully comprehend until we create ourselves. Fanatics tear away bits and pieces, digging for more, destroying everything in their path, until nothing is left, never truly finding the answer to it all. And in the end, there really is no answer... The true meaning of creation is only known between the artist and his/her inspiration. Fans can "consume" the creator's work, but they're only getting a piece of the bigger picture. I think the movie was trying to say that even Gods cannot create without an inspiration, and that Gods, like celebrities and artists, can also fall victims to fame and fanaticism by becoming sellouts, diluting and ultimately destroying their "creations" among the masses.
