    The author of the book also wrote an autobiographical book about her experience of being raped, so maybe The Lovely Bones was a way for her to deal with that trauma? That would explain how messed up the book is, and the unsatisfying ending, because reality sometimes just does not go the way you want it to.

      JKBGamer Sorry, when did that ever happen? We're talking about an industry that spent the last 6 or 7 decades literallt churning out money. And of course most of this people have passion for _the craft_ of what they do - you don't get to this kind of level without passion and a huge committment to what you do. However, when you live in a world where a movie can make 2 bilions dollars (or the equivalent, in the '80s, '70s, '60s and so on) in box office revenues _alone_, you can forget the idea the people do things _only_ because they're passionate about it.

      Idk. Maybe they just remembered it wrong. Like Peter told Ryan to loose weight and Ryan turned down the role because he didn’t feel like he could feel right in the role unless he had the extra weight that he had prepared with. So he told Peter he just didn’t feel like he was right for the role and didn’t fit what Peter wanted, and maybe he threw in an added opinion about being too young. So Peter just assumed it was because of the age thing and didn’t realize the weight had that much to do with it

      He means the fact that there are very morbid things that happen in the book that Jackson avoids because he wants it to be sad but not something that actually makes you feel. Like in the book they find pieces of her body but in the movie it's in a safe so it's like "She's dead but don't worry, we won't show you gross stuff, we know you can't handle that." It's positive because it shows death as something that's not that bad. Think about it, eventhough this girl is raped and killed she goes to utopia so its okay.

    The clips of the interviews are so telling of how much of a mess this is. The actress for the mother is saying that the plot hole of why her character leaves for no reason is there because Jackson was focused on other parts of the film..... You don't get to excuse loose threads in the final product like that. If it really was so insignificant that you didn't care to take care of that issue, why is it even in the film to begin with?

    • @davidjames579

      For her not to know is kinda embarassing. Just makes it seem like she was going through the motions. Even if the reasons not spelled out in the film, she should know her character. But as Ryan Gosling says PJ didn't have time to work with the actors on their characters, so I guess she didn't bother. Got caught out here though! No cover story, so inadvertenly blurts out the truth, and shows up PJ as well.

      Orochimaru Hebi In the book it makes a lot more sense because she spends so much time watching the lives of her loved ones through the misery they endure over her murder, how it breaks the relationship between her parents and at the time in the book, it’s been like 8-10 yrs or something and she doesn’t want to disturb the life of her loved ones by bringing back these horrible memories. She just want them to move on.
      You could also interpret it as her dying young and not maturing enough, being perpetually a very young teen who got her life stolen from her and it’s warping her priorities? She has this one last selfish wish to experience love with her crush. Would you blame a young girl who got raped and murdered for having selfish desires?
      Idk, it’s not as surface level but the movie is garbage at illustrating it.
      What I know though is it was a lot more pensive and well executed in the book than on screen.

His body rolled really slow off that rock, and not only did the snow coming down stop already before a surge of more snow comes over him somehow, but it literally looks like somebody just sweeps a blanket over him. And not only that, but his right arm magically teleports behind his head at a seemingly impossible angle none the less. And not ONLY that, but his left arm is suddenly sticking straight up and his left leg goes WAY up higher than it was literally just a second ago.

      It's actually a great movie. Pick a style and stick to it is not a very creative attitude at all.
      I think the reason why a lot of people don't like it is because most people live with a conditioned mind and most people in the west are only familiar with movies with genres (which is unrealistic because real life is not based on a genre).
      In Asia and especially in India we're accustomed to movies like this.

    • @Yoseqlo1
      @Yoseqlo1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      "which is unrealistic because real life is not based on a genre"
      Exactly. That's why we go to see movies, they are not like real life! If I wanted unestructured stories with no consistent tone and an accurate portrayal of society, I would go to literally any other place except the theatre.

    • @SrMway
      @SrMway 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@Yoseqlo1 That is not why people go to see movies, that's just your opinion. There are people who can appreciate movies which are not aimed at providing basic entertainment to the audiences like romance, comedy, action etc..
      And if you don't believe there are people who enjoy movies with no consistent tone just take me as an example. I like it! And I'm people. I do not watch movies to escape reality(at least not always). Thus I have no problems with movies which closely resemble real life.

    I agree that the movie could have been done a lot better. However there are some threads of themes that really played through well. The most significant are the shots when they're in his clubhouse. The feeling of dread by being confined and how well the actors play their parts is spot on.
    Some sub points were a little less well done but still within character. The husband not letting it go, the wife breaking down, and the sister acting on behalf of justice. These are things that real people would plausibly do. Also, the killer not only holding onto something to relive the moment, but also acting skiddish when people are starting to suspect him, are things someone who is guilty does.

He really seems to think he can improve on things, when actually it is also clear he is not a good story teller (I read an interesting opinion on his treatment of Moria, he started letting the viewer know that Balin and co had ended badly, dwarf skulls on the stairs etc. so no build up of dread, Tolkien was simply better at basic story telling, as well as in other aspects).

      i think what he also said about Adum's claims on the afterlife were on the very CONCEPT of it and not how it affected the plot and made this movie boring as hell and dumb too because it SURE AS HELL did. but yeah i agree with you that adum has knowledge on different concepts and such but what he said about the chemicals and the relations to real life and shit is what @Shady Bacon was referring to.
      i agree with what Enigma said partly because it is true that adum was more annoyed with the lack of consistency and its inclusion rather than just the idea of an afterlife but adum still bitched on for some time about not believing in and afterlife and so and so. i also think you sounded kinda pretentious with the "pay a bit more attention CHIEF" part. but yeah thats just what i think.

    I'd actually like to see a movie where someone is hallucinating the ghost of some loved one who was murdered giving them all these asinine 'clues' to the real murderer but the police detective is forced to tell them that it's all bullshit and wouldn't be the kind of thing to hold up in court in a post-Salem Witch Trial world. They actually try to use bullshit like 'my dog barked at him, dogs can sense teh EV1L!!" Have the bad guy get away with it because the victim's family believes in WOO over actual forensic evidence.

      SPOILER ALERT: at the very end he turns to the camera, breaking the fourth wall, to tell the audience that this is all just straight out bullshit, some dumb phantasy for people who can't deal with reality! - then he vanishes, whispering "Epicurus was right" ...

    The worst part of the movie is how the family realizes that he’s the killer but they have no evidence to make them think that he would be. It’s very infuriating.

    The one thing I really enjoyed about the movie was Saoirse Riordan performance. That girl is an amazing actress and despite all the flaws of the movie I couldn't help but tear up almost every time she was on screen. I can explain some of the perplexity that the youtuber had: some rapist keep mementos of their victim as trophies, and seeing joural articles about their "opera" enhance their ego. I'm too lazy to write more XD

    I have a different point of view for this movie. She's not trapped at the purgatory because her case wasn't solved, but because nor her or her father have accepted her death, hence the persuasion thing at the beginning. It is pretty clear on the movie (and I honestly don't I understand how you guys could've missed) that her actions at the purgatory and her father's actions on earth are very similar, leading to thinking that this is not a story about revenge, but acceptance.
    And oh my god, the mother doesn't leave for no reason, she leaves because she couldn't take her husband's obsession about finding his daughter's killer. Don't you guys know what happens with a family when a kid dies, especially in such horribles circumstances like this one?
    Also, I also found cliché that they've used the old pedo style for the murderer, but you have to take account the time that the movie is passing, which I believe it was the 70's. Not only that choice of glasses and clothes were (goes on)

      ... trending at the time, but not a lot of cautions on strangers were being advertised (she says something about how missing girls on milk cardboards weren't as comum).
      I personally don't believe in a heaven, hell or purgatory, but I also don't believe that the movie has anything to do with religion. It's about acceptance (she needed to realize that, even though her innocence and experiences were taken away, she needed to let them go; and the father needed to realize that life goes on). So goes that the movie finishes with the mother finally entering Susie's room.

      +Matthewdoesgaming In the book the mother basically has a complete nervous breakdown after the girl's death, cheats on her husband and leaves him to be with the new dude because she can't cope with her daughter's death. But that would ruin the feelgood movie vibes. instead of, y'know. Portraying just how badly something so horrible and distressing can completely ruin a family.

    Fun fact: the last scene where he falls off the cliff was supposed to just end with him falling and you wouldn't see him tumble down. It was supposed to have the audience decide whether he'd live or not. But test audiences weren't satisfied so they shot him tumbling down the cliff as a last minute re-shoot.
