I think that one of the most disturbing after-effects of the quake/s was not being able to recognise my own city centre that I grew up in and knew so well. I remember constantly being lost and having no idea where I was, on main streets. We are so quick to forget what was in those empty lots, and I navigate by landmarks!! Very valuable and historic video thankyou.

I totally agree with you, even after so long I get a bit mixed up especially now that some streets have changed driving direction.

I was visiting from the UK in 2005 and found all of NZ and its people very welcoming. I remember saying that had I been younger I would have tried to migrate to NZ, and thought, ironically, that I would probably like to live in Christchurch. Prayers and deep thoughts to all New Zealanders. Xxxx

as someone commented, that song sums up what we have lost of the city many of us have lived in most of our lives and tragically all the lives taken.

i was in the christchurch earthquake it was so scary, that shows other people how dangerous the world can be and that we really cant stop that. So you are a very nice person for making that (:

The before pics attest to the almost magical charm of the historic city. Sadly, almost no attempt is being made to express that charm in the replacement buildings which all look like post-modern boxes in odd shapes and colors. It will be a city bereft of character.

Joey Suggs if they rebuild all of those amazing beautiful mythical buildings you are talking about could possibly come down again and kill more and more lives with the shipping containers you are talking about they are safter as theyre not that high and more durable....

I’m so sad for people in New Zealand because even the museums are damaged and their memories are gone

The images that hit me the hardest in this video were the destroyed churches. A relative had told me that following the quake they could not visit the cemetery where they had family interred because of the risk of further collapse of the remains of the church itself. When I visited in 2015 I was able to experience the struggle to rebuild firsthand. I cannot say for certain, but I think the earthquake completely destroyed the headstone of my gggGrandparents' grave in Addington Cemetery. A few years before the quake the headstone had fallen and broken into three pieces - I had a photo. In 2015 I couldn't even find the remains of the headstone, so I think it might have been shaken into tiny pieces. So tragic - the whole city I mean, not just my ancestor's graves.

It really really sad. I never had opportunity to see Christchurch (got educated in New Plymouth and currently in Auckland) but I wish all the speedy progress before I leave this beautiful country for good. =)

this makes me sad to see the day that new zealand came to fall. My grandmother was inside of a building as i was only 3 at preschool somewhere and my grandmother got out of a building just as it collapsed.

As long as I live that day and year I'll never forget we all went through hell. We lived in what was called the red zone because of the damage to the ground our house was truly munted but we lived in it with no drainage, power that went off after nearly every aftershock for 9mths we showered at friends house or at work every day. I worked in the red zone as well, the city, getting special passes every 6wks to go to work. It's 7yrs on now and the city is half way to being rebuilt and people have rebuilt their lives also, but we will never live in the city again we have rebuilt our lives in the country

Anyone else here from geography or is it just me? R.I.P to all those who died in the quakes. I just hope that for those who had damage done to their houses or were wounded by the falling debris to be safe and doing well

unfortunately it is constructed over active fault and loose soil prompt to liquefaction ; it mean seismic waves are accentuated and there is also possibility of ground deformation with all impact for building stability

Hmmm why were there no national building safety measures implemented in the first place. It is earthquake prone.

most of those old buildings that collapsed were built at the second half of the 19th century. New Zealand was still a relatively newly settled country. Building was done at a great pace and before best Engineering practises were really considered. Any country with buildings built around that time and earlier would have as much destruction as Christchurch under the exact earthquake conditions. New Zealand has pioneered many best practise building regulations used around the world. Search Canterbury University Earthquake Research and you will be surprised how advanced New Zealand is.
