Especially if you haven't removed the cooler in some time, you can rip the cpu right out of the socket. Yes I am speaking from experience 😉
Watching this helped me get over my anxiety of replacing the thermal paste on the PC I bought. I was afraid I was going to have to remove the entire motherboard but I see it's much simpler.
Its still nerve racking to me. I dont have the money to replace a whole pc if I mess something up. I worked many years to be able to have the pc I do and its the only real gift I've ever gotten myself.

When remove old paste, I use lint-less wipes and alcohol or pure acetone. Then after wipe it clean to remove any residue with a dry, soft lint-less wipe. Top tip for removing an old heat sink. Run the PC up for a few minutes. Then shut it down, and unplug it. The heat sink will pop off easily. The reason is when it is cold the paste sets like concrete. Running the PC for a few minutes heats up the CPU and, hence the paste. It will then be soft and will allow the CPU to be removed a lot more easily. :)

You should never use paper towels or Q-tips unless absolutely necessary because you have no other option, in a pinch, so to speak. What you SHOULD use is a lint free microfiber cloth or paper coffee filter. These don't leave particulates behind. Around the edges, as you did, is fine, but the actual surfaces should be final wiped with a clean lint free or microfiber cloth, or paper coffee filter, with a lightly dampened application of 91% Isopropyl alcohol. I have put as much pressure on it as I can without being afraid that I might break something and i can try to screw it in for 15 minutes and still nothing.
What kind of cooler? similar to mine?
@@TechIlliterate its a circular ibuypower intel one. The cpu is a i7-9700k id that helps.
@@Omega-Nations Stock cooler?
@@TechIlliterate i figured it out. There was another much smaller compartment on my case behind a wall and where the motherboard was screwed into. The thing that was supposed to be where the screws went into had fallen off. After holding it in place i was able to get the screws in! Thank you so mich for replying so fast though. You earned yourself another subscriber haha!
@@Omega-Nations Oh the mounting bracket had fallen away. I've had the same issue in the past. Glad you found a fix.
Thank you for teaching me. Very useful vid for a first timer like me💯
So what should I do if I applied my paste but didn’t have the chance to immediately put it on due to fan issue and I had to put the fan on and off like twice and after figuring it out my fans and stuff works when I turn on my pc but not my monitor it won’t turn on does that mean I ahve to redo thermal paatjng
Does the stock cooler, let's say a Stealth Wraith from the AMD Ryzen 5 3600, come with a tube of thermal paste?
I believe it comes with paste pre applied to the bottom of the cooler.
@@TechIlliterate I thought so. Factory paste is a big No No
Thanks for this high-quality (content and visual) video!!!
Soo I've raninto a little problem, I was going to replace the thermal paste and, clean my pc buttttt, I can't remove my cpu cooler as there are two screws that are not wanting to be removed, I have tried with my hands, screwdriver *with different sizes, and I was able to remove the other two beforehand with the same size* and as much as i didnt want to force and nothing. also do I have to use some type of alcohol? As I don't have any and I can't really leave the house to get some more.
You don't have to use alcohol. You can try using a dry coffee filter or nail polish remover.
As for the screw situation, I hope you can remove it!
@@TechIlliterate been trying for the past hour and nothing I've tried different patterns and, different pressures and we'll different everything ill either just deal with the cleaning and, try to find a job to upgrade to a better pc or try again next week as there are somethings I need my pc for, but thank you for the luck and the great video and tips!
@@TechIlliterate and got it with a par of plyers and alot of cursing 👍🏾
hey, I think I put too much pressure when screwing down my cpu cooler and my temps are not as cool as they should be.. is it because it's too tight?
Typically no. But it is possible. Try loosening the screws slightly.
2:36 Nobody is going to talk about this? 😂 Great vid btw thanks so much!
Did i need to clean a paste then put a thermal paste? Because i didn't clean my paste i just put a thermal paste and it's not stoping freezing.
I applied thermal paste to my cpu 15 days ago and it only turns on for a second then I instantly turns back off can someone please help
Quick solid video, thank you!
Thanks man, first time doing this, this video helped a lot.
Thanks,I do this when i get my CPU paste here,Ive ordered some of E bay,Ive also had my gaming computer in bits,Given it all a very good clean, the paste looks more than used,Given that and the grill a very good clean,I'm glad I got a spare gaming computer to use for now
Why does my cooler become uneven each time I put a screw on? Is this normal? It makes it feel impossible to put all the screws on which im still having this problem
Tighten them one at a time and very slowly.
Amazing tutorial and conviently you have the same cooler that I do so the fear was pretty much zero. this was so easy to replace thank you so much for an amazing tutorial!
applying thermal paste on the cpu is one of the most anxiety triggering things for me. it kinda goes up there with changing the strings on my guitar too. it always gives me anxiety. you can go overboard so fast and also apply to little just as fast at the same time. it's the worst part of building a pc by far. everything else i can deal with but the thermal paste application i just wish we had a better way of doing it.
How can you tell if the thermal paste is conductive or not? I don't see anything about electrical conductivity on the packaging.
That was a mistake. AS5 is NOT conductive. Thermal pads are typically conductive though.
I was searching so many pasted. Gel pasted for pc , tooth pasted for gel pc well is actually thermal pasted 😂😂
His technical abilities are almost certainly outmatched by his guitar skills.
Can I use water as alternative
Not a good idea. Just dry wipe.
On electrical components? You should probably look into basic electronics 1st, before you try something like this
Hydrogen peroxide is the only thing that even works besides the alcohol.
Well done, mate! Very clear, very helpful. I'll subscribe.
Building my first PC and got stuck here, thanks for the advice!!
can you remove the cpu cooler after to see if you applied it correctly and put it back again?
or nahh?
Well, I did make a video on the matter. Yes you can.
Hey man do you know what normal temps are for the ryzen 5800x when idle and when gaming?
No, depends on many variables. My 5900X is usually around mid 30s idle and 50-60 when gaming. Still using the Kraken cooler.
Thank you, i am building my pc later today, and i am kinda scared that something is going to happen. this video made me feel a little more confident!
Edit: I turned on! it works! i am going to get windows on it tomorrow
How does your PC run now, mate.
@@Gexrge_OSRS it runs really well. i've been using it a lot, and i've not had a single problem with the parts i picked out.
@@Herrgabby specs?

Thanks so much dude! Put new thermal paste on my cpu after like 4 years or something. Anyways I definitely should've done it earlier lol.
4:20 "oh he has a beatiful smil- HOW TF IS HE HOLDING THE PHONE WITH 2 THUMBS UP???"
Good video mate. The thermal paste is thermally conductive but NOT electrically. it won't short any components but you still don't want to get it on them.
some thermal paste IS conductive. always read your labels!
Thanks for the tip about overspill. Has potentially saved me from wrecking an old but much loved laptop 👍🙂👍
I haven’t had to replace my TP since I built my PC almost 6 years ago.. cleaning it today and it’s like cement..
Aye same lol how did you clean it up? I’ll be doing it later
Do i have to apply it further with my finger and even out the dot or just put the thermal paste there as a dot and then straight away press it using a cooler ? Please tell me
Just subscribed. Articulate, accurate, no nonsense. Thank you.
This is super helpful!! Thank you 🙏🏻
I have to laugh I always watch these types of things and nobody ever has my computer until now you have my exact insides lol good vid ty
