Holy fuck, the amount of miss information on thermal paste application is just crazy. This guy did a good job! but your worst nightmare is not applying enough paste. Only people who over clock to the electrical and physical limit of the cpu need to worry about thickness of thermal paste. Usually these people lap or remove the die plate to achieve better results. Sounds like either the cooling liquid hasn't been sufficiently filled up (or the pump isn't running etc), or someone forgot to remove a plastic seal before installing the cooler. 96C is bad with standard air cooling under heavy loads, let alone water cooling at startup. If you hit well above 90 just on idle, it means you probably never get more than half the CPU performance that it has available since it'll be throttling instantly and cut down on its frequency significantly to avoid critical cpu damage. As a benchmark for a standard build, your idle should be around 50C or preferably lower with watercooling, and stay in the 60-80C range under load. Anything nearing 90 is a major warning sign that something critical has gone wrong. Also make sure that you don't have the water tubing/radiator mounted in a way that could create big air gaps and prevent flow through the pump, especially if the pump is in the CPU attachment block.

So I guess I have no excuse now my pc constantly crashes from over heating still running the thermal past that was applied when it was built for me 7 years ago. But being computers are obsolete at 7 years I might as well just build a new one
LoL, I just did mine today on my old Inspiron 530 from 2008 - a whole DoZeN Yrs ago!! Only because it recently crashed & I took everything apart to clean out all that dust (this part, i actually do once every 2-3 yrs which kept the system running this long)... this time though, I just took both CPU+GPU apart to clean those fans thoroughly - that's when I realized that the old paste has dried up pretty much. To think that this computer has been running almost non-stop for that long or at least 18-22 hrs daily, is quite impressive =D
I don't know about AMD's Ryzen CPU's that come with their own coolers/fans as those may come with pre-applied thermal paste... if not, just buy a 1g tube off Amazon or eBay for like $3-6 depending on the brand & use the Dot/Pea method to apply when assembling them together. I'll build my 1st system ever in 6-8 months when Ryzen 4600 hits the market... I put it off with 1600, 2600, & 3600 [almost went with it last yr, but decided to kick the bucket another yr by with my old Inspiron 530]. Actually, I just finished fixing it by replacing the CMOS battery after seeking for an answer as to why it crashed while I stepped away from it a couple of weeks ago. Found a thread where many had similar experiences, so I ordered a couple of new CR2032 off eBay for 1.50 apiece [PaNaSoNiC+SoNy with expiration date of 2029]... that was before removing the old one from the 530 to clean it out that I noticed it to be a NeWSuN brand CR2032. Then I had to wait yet another week for the thermal paste as I was not expecting to take those fans off their CPU&GPU while doing the full cleaning job! Spend part of yesterday & all morning cleaning out my full-size desk & changing out 1 of my 2 SaMSuNG monitors [it died after 11yrs... the other should last another 3-4 more yrs as it hasn't been turned on continuously in those 11+ yrs] with a 27in UltraSharp. They look funny next to one another as the new DeLL unit is 16:9 & the SaMMy is a 16:10 Also added a new RGB keyboard that I bought over 2yrs ago, but never got around to switching it out with the DeLL's. About to hook everything up in the next few minutes & back to regular online life again as the small tablet I've been using to get by is tiresome for typing long messages like this oNe!😂!
I just dismantled my 8 year old 3770k rig and discovered that only about 80% of the CPU was making contact with the cooler - I wonder if not using any thermal paste at all resulted in better cooling adherence and improved overall performance?

50-60 at max load
How often I should replace the thermal paste?
im still thibking about replacing thermal paste on my old family pc. It was used most of time 1-3hrs every day. More 1hr than 2hr so ye wasnt heavily used at all and temps are still decent. Cpu is at 35° when in bios and in windows idle its at max 60°. Thermal paste holding up good so probably not going to do anything
At least two years
every 3 or 6 months, in between them
I am using only paper towel and brush at the end to remove the small particles left from the paper. The cotton buds are unnecessary imo.
Hello I have a question I’m an average pc builder and this was the first time I applied thermal paste by myself and I did a pea size dot on the cpu and a pea size dot on the heat sink and didn’t know have anything to press with so when putting the fan in place I just use that to spread it evenly? Is this okay
Should be fine, if you want you can just cut a piece of plastic bottle to use as a spreader
Can i use Nail polish remover for the cooler and at the cpu? My thermal paste is probably dry because i didnt change it more then 2 years... ty for help ;)
No
Bobfishlol ??? Why no
@@Unleg1t too many other things in there that'll leave a residue of unwanted stuff
Nail polish remover is fine if you don't have isopropyl alcohol around
@@DJ-CBZ 8 years paste here, finally changing it today lol.
I can’t find any cuddle swabs.
sorry man, I'm to paranoid I'll mess up-- I rather take it to someone pro to do it for me. I can get that's dumb but after building my PC, alternating it and utterly messing it up for months, I just... can't. Not yet, anyway xD. Thanks though, this was neat!
Don't give up! Everyone started off being terrible at DIY too. You just have to learn bit by bit.
When u clean the CPU do use anything or just wipe it off
Good man, very well explained.
This is the problem about youtube removing the dislike button, We just don't know if this is completely right or not. Literally going through the comments to see if everyone is agreeing to this.
i make thermal paste and we use VN&P Naptha to clean paste. i have to switch my cooler.. never done anything to a PC before
My CPU is water cooled. It reaches 154-167-212 Fahrenheit when I’m on TH-cam. Or downloading a game. I’m not sure why this is happening. I’m thinking about replacing the thermal paste..
A month ago i bkught a rog 360 ryujin aio cooler that has pre applied thermal paste, im replacing my cpu from a ryzen 9 3950x with a ryzen 9 5950x, should i add a dot of thermal paste on the new cpu or will the pre applied be enough?
97% rubbing alcohol, is that good to use to remove the paste?
yes
Can you use regular alcohol or acetone to remove the paste?
I use acetone, make sure it is without additives (like some nail cleaners) as they might leave some sediment, also don't breath it ;)
rochr4 thx for the reply cuz my mom is a nail salon owner so I have lots of acetone in hand and thx for the tip haha
Don't use beer 😂
@@rochr4 i can recommend breathing it haha
I have a question, I recently upgraded my PC, and now when playing Rust, and only Rust, a high CPU usage game. Sometimes, randomly it will flip my breaker, all the power in my room only will turn off. And I’m wondering if it’s my thermal paste because it never happens when I’m doing anything else. Only while playing Rust. Sometimes it doesn’t happen and sometimes it flips the breaker like 4 times in a row back to back.
Get a new pc
Or upgrade your power supply dawg
Ummm......
CPU usage doesn't interfere with the thermal paste since thermal paste helps helps it cool down physically so that the pc doesn't shutdown the pc byitself
I think it's a problem with the OS or the thing u upgraded (ram/ssd) or maybe settings of the game
Cheers for the video but the music in the background is distracting tbh
Is it possible to remove the intel cooler and replace it by a be quiet! Shadow Rock LP Air Cooler?? or there is not enough room?
depends on your case
1:30. No, not paper. Use microfiber cloth. Paper towel is just awful, js
towel is ok if you do as he did a final wipe with the isopropyl and qtip. I do recommend you get a grounded wrist strap though
Bob Ray paper towel breaks down and gets fluff and debris everywhere...use an old cotton t-shirt or microfiber cloth. Both you can find free in many places.
You're telling me I got the perfect amount FIRST TRY???
Most do, its just common sense to use a bit
Is there a way to upgrade the processor? I currently have the i7 4770
Yes! What processor do you want to upgrade to

My old Windows 2000 PC sounds like a literal jet engine! I've always just put it down to it being a Pentium 4, but I guess I'll have to check the state of the thermal paste
Took of my thermal paste and have not used new thermal paste since... i was wondering why my pc tirned to shit
Jesus Christ
SO uh i took off my cpu and just as i took off the fan heatsink my cpu came with it so i was windering why my cpu wont go back in place turns out some of thr stuff on thr cpu bent but thanks to my brother i got the thermal laste and cpu done im so happy it works 😂i was ready to cry and be without a pc for months but ye happy it works :)
what is best thermal paste on i9-9900k? my pc run rocket league maybr 10min and hit 88°c and min is 58°c and windows screen hit 56°c and min is 34°c Help!! cooler is ryujin 360 aio
Just got into hardware and i love it
when I closed the clamp thing over my cpu it left scratch marks on the left and right side of the clamp. is this normal?????
It's okay to use alcohol in hands??
Sorry if its stupid to ask but how often do you have to clean/replace thermal paste?
Research! But what I seen was if it is working right you shouldn’t have to replace in a couple years

I haven’t replaced mine in the 7 years i’ve had my laptop, so it’s hard. How can i replace mine?
Will it be okay if I use 90% alcohol?
yupp
Exactly, im flooding it with 98% isoprophyl alcohol with no remaining material left after procedure
does someone know if it has to be isopropanol? I have 95% alcohol in my house but I don't know if it will damage anything. Should I buy isopropanol or is mine fine?
It's safer to use isopropyl but stuff like acetone works okay too. Just make sure it's not full of additives that could potentially damage something (unlikely) and try not to get high off of the fumes or you might make a mistake 😂
Can i use nailpolish with acetone in it?
NO. but nail polish remover is okay as long as it's not full of additives that could potentially damage something
So I guess I have no excuse now my pc constantly crashes from over heating still running the thermal past that was applied when it was built for me 7 years ago. But being computers are obsolete at 7 years I might as well just build a new one
does 91% isopropyl work? thats all I have lying around
Thank you, you’re amazing!
Every when do we need to remove and apply new paste?
I do it every 2 yrs tho
LoL, I just did mine today on my old Inspiron 530 from 2008 - a whole DoZeN Yrs ago!!
Only because it recently crashed & I took everything apart to clean out all that dust (this part, i actually do once every 2-3 yrs which kept the system running this long)... this time though, I just took both CPU+GPU apart to clean those fans thoroughly - that's when I realized that the old paste has dried up pretty much.
To think that this computer has been running almost non-stop for that long or at least 18-22 hrs daily, is quite impressive =D
@@ejojo13 if I will use only cpu stock cooler of Ryzen 3 3rd gen. still needs to apply thermal paste? Or depends on CPU cooler you use?
They look funny next to one another as the new DeLL unit is 16:9 & the SaMMy is a 16:10
Also added a new RGB keyboard that I bought over 2yrs ago, but never got around to switching it out with the DeLL's.
About to hook everything up in the next few minutes & back to regular online life again as the small tablet I've been using to get by is tiresome for typing long messages like this oNe!😂!

Is it okay to use 70% alcohol ?
i got the same doubt, idk
I just dismantled my 8 year old 3770k rig and discovered that only about 80% of the CPU was making contact with the cooler - I wonder if not using any thermal paste at all resulted in better cooling adherence and improved overall performance?
is this a joke?
