"1963" is a track by English rock group New Order. It was originally released as a B-side to "True Faith" in 1987 and appeared on the Substance compilation of the same year.

I don’t think there’s a single new order song that doesn’t give me goosebumps
They are masters at emotive music. I recognised that back in 1983 when listening to a mix tape of theirs for the first time. I was walking across a wheat field on a summer's day with my Walkman on full blast - Procession came on first and I knew within two minutes that this band would be with me for life.
I've prob played this video a couple hundred times over the years. This is my favourite version of 1963. Jane Horrocks is brilliant for the video.
Such elegant romanticism in this song. The expansive, shimmery, washed-out sweep of the rhythm guitars and synth pads; the longing, bittersweet ache of the lead melodies; the hypnotic heartbeat of the bass and drums... and Bernard's vocals sound so world-weary. Very beautiful, really a perfect pop song.
Such beautifully put. I agree on everything. However I always thought this song is about the domestic violence.
I actually have heard it's supposed to be from the perspective of Jackie Kennedy singing about JFK. But in the reality of this song, the 1963 Kennedy assassination was a botched attempt to kill Jackie, ordered by JFK himself so that he could continue a love affair (hence "Johnny, don't point that gun at me.") But I've also heard Bernard say that New Order's lyrics are kinda intentionally written to be very abstract/expressionistic, sometimes a little inscrutable, and like open to lots of interpretation, which is one of the things I really love about their songs. Brilliant band.

I was born in 1963 and I love this song. Thank you New Order.
My Girlfriend was 16 and a sixth form prefect at school and I was 15 yr old a year below her in the fifth year. I idolised her and she used to play this to me at her house.I have always loved this track since and still think of her and those times after 30 yrs gone by. Shame I was a silly up my own arse kid and didn't realise what a diamond she was.This track brings back good memories,hope she's doing well wherever she is in the world.

This version of "1963" will always be my favorite because Hooky is up in the mix and them the soaring "church organ" in the second chorus and bridge. Also love the concept of the video with the suitcase getting bigger and her walking through the moors around Madchester. Brilliant!

This is my favorite version of this great song. The guitar adds a wonderful atmosphere that is different to the B-side 12" version. All great, but this version is my favorite. 🥰

Been listening and loving new order since 87 and I really love this song
My all time favourite NO song and this is the best recorded live performance of it I have seen by far. The way that guitar tech manages to fix Barney's guitar issue and hand it back to him just in time is just amazing. So is the fact that Barney doesn't even break stride and just throws his guitar aside, steps up to the mic to sing, then straps it back on again and comes in for the riff without missing a note!
The bass is out of this world.
Hooky's the shit. He's a HUGE part of what made New Order (and Joy Division for that matter) great. It's a damn shame that he and the rest of the band are not on good terms these days. So sad when you hear that about an amazing band that you love. Humans are always more disappointing than their art. lol

My first memory with this song dates back to 1991. it was used by UCVTV in Chile, it was a short video in the middle of the commercials showing a landscape of Valparaíso and the channel's logo. It was the Substance version BTW
Everyone is talking about how good the song is (I also like this song). Who else noticed that her suitcase keeps getting bigger and bigger in the video. She also climbed out of a huge suitcase resembling her small suitcase. She is also first out in the middle of a remote rural area, and she suddenly ends up in a city.

I missed knowing anything about New Order in the 1980s from highschool. But a girlfriend in 1991 in college introduced me to New Order and the Smith's and Siouxie and I'm grateful and have loved the music since. Takes me back instantly to my time in college. Not necessarily good times and not necessarily good memories. But anyway.

You can find the best version of this song on Disc 2 of Substance.
I bought the 12" of True Faith the day it came out (almost 35 years ago) and was blown away by the quality of 1963 on the B-side. This version is different and I think I prefer it. If you listen to one of Bernard's favourite tracks (Shades by Iggy Pop) you'll hear the subtle parallels.
I'd say of all their records, the outro to 1963 is my favourite and as it fades I find myself turning it up because I don't want it to end.
