    I feel like 99% of basketball fans know nothing about Kareem's public perception in the 1970s, he was viewed as a "dark, brooding Muslim" by mainstream America at this time, people did not know what to think of him. People in Milwaukee always felt betrayed that they drafted 'Lew Alcindor' & he rejected them by turning to "Kareem Abdul-Jabbar." By the late 1970s he had almost taken on a villain role in the NBA. It was truly his appearance in the movie 'Airplane' that turned his public perception around, people were blown away that he could be the type of guy to smile and make jokes. I also think most people are unaware how close he was to Wilt Chamberlain in the 1960s as a teenager, even dating young women at that age thanks to Wilt. Also I think most people don't know about Kareem's house burning down in the early 80s while he was not home, he lost his entire jazz vinyl record collection that he had built his entire life, and every single basketball award he had ever won to that point, which devastated Kareem deeply. The fire led to his marriage falling apart very quickly as I think Kareem always felt like his wife somehow could have done more to save the house since she was there when it happened.

      Kareem should be the GOAT based on all his trails and tribulations. Michael Jordan was marketted better but Kareem is the true GOAT and he was robbed with the 1980 Finals MVP but because Magic Johnson was more marketable he won the MVP & everyone hypes that Game 6 performance so much, Stephen Curry had a great game 4 performance in this year Finals but no one cares, I dont get why Magic performance was so significant if Kareem was the one that carried them & got injured in game 5 & played with a mess up ankle despite of that giving the Lakers an opportunity for a Game 6, I read in the insidehoop.com blog that the voters wanted Kareem as the MVP but admit that Magic was more marketable & dats why they voted for Magic. Its a damn shame Kareem still hasnt gotten a job as a coach yet.

      all that matters is money in the end... look at any sport, business, or organization and you can regularly find players, people, actors, movies getting ripped off due to popularity and money... I'm not a warriors fan, but do you really think an inferior cavs team can come back from being down three games in the nba finals to win it all...? the answer is not a chance in hell... I'm a ref, and the amount of fake fouls being called randomly for the cavs in "key" moments was absurd... and when it was controversial they would never show the replay... and on the other hand the warriors players were getting grabbed, pushed, and hand checked the entire game... then green gets ejected after being instigated... riiiiiiggggghhhht... the nba only cares about not hemorrhaging money, so they have to create a "rivalry", because the warriors are so dominate and the league is afraid of going back to the dark ages before bird and magic (and the players dont complain, because the better the league does, the larger their contracts are)... its sad that nothing is sacred anymore... i just hope basketball gets the security in the usa that soccer has in europe (which still has problems with corruption)... hopefully then the nba won't have to play favorites with players and teams in order to pull views... big reason why i can't watch too much of the nba/ take it seriously...

  • @Charon58
    @Charon58 6 ปีที่แล้ว +441

    I get pretty tired of the GOAT argument anyway...no one wins a championship alone. Injuries matter. Competition in the division matters. Even great players have ups and downs within a career. You can't mix eras. Jabbar is one of the giants of the game.

    • @jakemiller270
      @jakemiller270 6 ปีที่แล้ว +34

      I agree i have just settled for Generational best debates. Russell, Kareem, Magic, Jordan, Kobe Lebron, and now todays under 25 stars are all differint eras so the can't be compared with any real reason. Even comparing Jordan to Magic is hard cause their primes were played in a differint era despite having a career overlap. Magic never won post expansion and Jordan never won pre extension so their careers are hard to compare with any real result.

    Another overlooked factor in Kareem's first season in LA is the fact that the Lakers had to give up a lot of young talent to get him (second-year guard Brian Winters, and rookies Junior Bridgeman and Dave Meyers, both first-round picks) along with Elmore Smith. That left them with a roster that consisted of a lot of NBA/ABA vagabonds who were nearing the end of the trail, an over-the-hill Gail Goodrich and have-jumper, will-travel Cazzie Russell. Not exactly the '86 Celtics...

Because of your video, after 45 years of life, I just found out that up until 1980, the Bulls were considered in the Western Conference. Interesting. Interesting because supposedly the pick the got Magic Johnson was based on a coin flip between Chicago and L.A. I can see how that was possible now.
    Makes me laugh though. We almost had Magic and not Jordan. With the conference change, that would've pitted Magic against Bird in the East rather than in the Finals. To have Dr. J, Bird and Magic in same conference???

    Although ideally the Lakers should've made the playoffs that year... realistically speaking, a team that is BELOW 0.500 had a below average regular season. Even though the Lakers rightfully deserved a playoff seed, they were still 40-42 which is clearly below league standards.
    In my opinion, the real reason why the Lakers were 40-42 in 1975-1976 is really due to the retirement and departure of Jerry West. Even though he only played 31 games in 1973-1974 Regular Season (which was his last season), the Lakers still finished that year with a 47-35 record.
    Once West retired after 1973-1974, the Lakers the following season were below 0.500 despite their best player at the time Gail Goodrich playing 72 games in 1974-1975. The following season after that, in 1975-1976, the Lakers went 40-42 despite one of their best players (Gail Goodrich) playing 75 games that year and despite the addition of Kareem Abdul Jabbar that year playing all 82 games.
    Then in 1976-1977, Bill Sharman switches into a new role from being the head coach to being the franchise executive. Jerry West comes back but this time becomes the head coach of the Lakers. That same season, the Lakers win 53 games despite the fact that Gail Goodrich got traded to the Jazz that same year and Kareem actually had no other star teammate.
    The success of the Lakers throughout the entire 70s decade completely revolved around Jerry West. Just his presence alone in the franchise is what brought Los Angeles it's relevance.

Just like Curry now hears how LeBron is the best player today, but Curry is paid more, sells more jerseys, his team is worth more, song lyrics are changed from "I wish I was a little bit taller to I wish I was a little bit smaller". LeBron makes his teammates better he just doesn't have any help but Curry is just lucky to be playing with all Stars. Good video. Do one to show Isaiah Thomas love. He was the best player for 3 years. Never ever got any love. The first finals he lost he was the best in that series up until the game after he got hurt. But the league wouldn't market him.

    I'm glad to see someone bring up Kareem's name changed as a factor in how, let's be honest, white America viewed him. In college there was one person, white, who just badmouthed Kareem no matter how well he played. His most frequent comment was " it takes a lot of talent for a guy seven feet tall to do what he does"(total sarcasm). He finally shut his mouth when someone asked the question "if it's so easy why can't Mel Counts do it "? Mel Counts was a seven foot tall white player with marginal basketball skills in the NBA in the '70's.
    Before the game in Thomas and Mack arena, where Kareem broke the NBA career scoring record, we, the fans, gave Kareem a rousing 15 minute standing ovation. I remember seeing Magic giving Kareem a friendly push and smile. Of course, when he broke the record there was another standing 'O'. A friend of mine and i had PERFECT SEATs for the record breaking shot. After the game Magic said he had been telling Kareem that the fans overall liked him, but I don't think Kareem believed it until that game. Thomas and Mack arena is in Las Vegas and was supposed to be the home away from home for the Utah Jazz. Their attendance was disappointing in Utah coming from New Orleans, so they tried to branch out. That was the Jazz last season playing some of their games in Vegas.
    They realized, with LA only 250 miles away, that was LAKER TERRITORY.
    After the game Kareem said he was shocked but pleased by the ovations.

    Something I read online about Kareem's 1976 season:
    "Kareem is traded to a Lakers, where the Bucks get every half-decent Laker in return except for an aging Gail Goodrich. This team was so bad that Kareem even dragging them to 40-42 is viewed as an accomplishment, and he's rewarded with the MVP, the first one since 1956 (Bob Pettit) awarded to a player on a below .500 team. But for the second consecutive season, Kareem fails to make the playoffs."

  • @unbiasvsbias3955
    @unbiasvsbias3955 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    I just don't find the excuses for when he missed the playoffs to be valid. And here's why ->
    Regarding the games that Kareem missed in the 1974/75 season, it was due to a broken hand that he suffered from punching a stanchion in the preseason out of frustration after having his eye scratched. It's Kareem's own fault that he missed those games due to not keeping his emotions in check and self-inflicting an easily avoidable injury. Any struggles the Bucks had in his absence is his own fault since that situation could easily have been avoided. You need to stop omitting facts bro! I'm starting to believe you have some type of agenda or something.
    But anyways, as an example, If a star like LeBron or Harden today broke their hand by punching an object out of frustration, they would absolutely deserve heavy criticism for any struggles the team had in their absence. Kareem definitely does not deserve a pass for that.
    As for Kareem's 1975/76 season, even though *two lower-record teams made the playoffs, he still finished with a losing 40-42 record in his prime in a conference where 6 of 9 teams, including his own, had losing records.* That's absolutely inexcusable especially with Goodrich averaging under 20 PPG for the Lakers. In that weak of a conference, whether missing the playoffs or not, there is no excuse for Kareem in his absolute prime to fail to achieve a winning record.
    Those are just my two cents/thoughts really.

      @@unbiasvsbias3955 Sure. And back to your original point, today, he probably wouldn't be given a pass for missing the playoffs those yrs. Or getting bounced early. Then again, for better or worse, players didn't have the option (like today) of free agency. To play out your contract and go anywhere. Thus, it eliminated the likelihood of "super" team building. LA and Boston were fortunate to get Magic and Bird and sew up greatness for a while.
      And it still took some dealing and foresight to get or keep the right pieces around them.

      It was already explained in the video. One division had all the good teams. Two teams made it in the other division with a worse record than the Lakers. It was a fluke. Whether you want to accept it or not is another story.

      Edit: I didn't say "bad" I said inexcusable. There's no reason for a player of kareem's caliber to not have a better winning record than 40-42, considering he was in the smack dab of his prime. Keyword: *Prime*

    He didn’t force his way out of Milwaukie. He requested to be traded to NY or LA for “culture reasons”. The lakers had a bunch of talented players and basically gave up their whole team to acquire him. It set up Milwaukie for several years as playoff contenders as all the players traded contributed. For three seasons the Lakers had no point guards with any skills, and until they drafted Magic they had no way of getting the ball to Kareem. Chris Broussard is more concerned with his George Jefferson imitation and riding Lebron’s jock than stating facts.

    Ok I'll give u the injury season, but come on, he lost more games than he won in his first season in LA. Whether it be the format or his conference, the fact is he failed to take his struggling team to the playoffs. Also, in the modern NBA, the best player on a losing team never wins MVP even if they have freakish stats, reason being that wins are a barometer to individual performance and they factor into the MVP discussion. If LeBron put up a triple double every game but his team had a losing record, chances are people would not view his season as MVP worthy. Kareem averaged 28, 17, and 4 that season and set the single season blocks record. Crazy numbers but if we are trying to compare player legacies, that won't get you the MVP nowadays if your team loses more than it wins. We should put a little less weight on that mvp award when comparing Kareem to modern players.

      Also triple doubles don't mean shit, especially in today's NBA where everyone has to get their ass back on transition defense. LeBron and Westbrook do not contest shots and stay near the rim to grab every uncontested rebound while teammates run down the court. That's how you pad rebounds. Of course getting 8+ assists every game is easy when you make 80% of the passes for your team. It actually hurts the team that one person dominates the ball like that because no one else can get assist numbers in a ball stagnant system. LeBron designed the system to pad his own stats above winning.
