Comparing "cookies and snacks" to money in a capitalist society is so insane. These college athletes need to pay for housing and food. It's not a special treat, its how they support their families.

I wouldn't go that far, we have had more than a few Doctors and Lawyers as well as some physicists in professional sports, Kareem is still Amazing but knowing his humility he would probably express this same sentiment.

Numerous things came to my head when he said how they should “play for the love of the game.”
1. Why do the coaches get paid millions of dollars instead of coaching for free “for the love of the game”
2. Why have practices and workouts that cut into these kids studying time for exams that you worry about
3. Why only play first stringers play instead of 1string a quarter (1st string-first quarter, 2nd string-second quarter etc etc) since it will allow every player play just “for the love of the game”
4. Why sell jerseys instead of giving them out for free “for the love of the game”
5. Why have the universities get paid from tv deals just show the players playing for free because it is all “for the love of the game”

Actually, I'm against all affirmative action. I think you should be able to get into college based on your potential to succeed in an academic environment, not based on your physical sporting abilities, the color of your skin, or your parent's financial status. Again, these people are getting a free education that costs most people tens of thousands of dollars. They don't even have to have good grades to get in, just the ability to throw a perfect spiral or dunk a basketball. People who aren't born with athletic ability, and it is something you're born with, have to actually get good grades and work hard to get in, not just throw a ball through a hoop. The double standard is actually kind of gross

Oh, and I did get in. In fact I got a master's degree, and I did it using my brain, not brawn. I'm not jealous at all. I'm angry for all the kids who worked hard but couldn't get into college because some 7 ft dick who can jump real high took their spot

Van Jones can go some where! Seriously he misses the point. Student athletes make huge sacrifices in terms of practice, travel, competition and missed life experiences. They deserve compensation for that. I was a scholarship D-1 athlete. My scholarship was $5000 at a school that cost 15k per to go to. Our practices were 20 hours or more per week; then time spent competing traveling to competitions, and then doing other stuff for the athletic department. That way less than minimum wage. Then the AD would have the nerve to ask us to do things like be a sales person for the school. It’s crazy. They deserve to be compensated.

The highest paid public employee in every state in the U.S. is overwhelmingly a college football or basketball coach. Their salaries are in the millions. These kids deserve to get a slice of the college sports pie.

Why does Van think it’s wrong for athletes to benefit from what they bring, but it’s right for others to benefit? Kareem is right on the money with every word. Van is like he just sells out for himself and damn everybody who needs assistance. Why can’t someone live the game and still want to get paid for what they bring? What if you don’t have the talent you love the game, but if you do you’re only dong it for the money? 🤦🏻♂️

I can say this as someone that is lifelong Celtics fan so by default despise Kareem Abdul Jabar. The onething tho Kareem rarely speaks out but when he does everyone should listen to what he says because he is always right on in what he says. I wish Kareem would speak out even more.

You can literally look it up on their website, the TH-camr could too, but y’all just want to complain and be misinformed. You got the choice to split the revenue among all college athletes or only the selected one or two percent. You know the only logical answer if you are a real leftist.

There are a lot of college athletes who have pro aspirations but get injured in college and never make it there. Paying them gives them something for the risks they take while trying to make the pros.

I too was recruited by Division 1 Programs to play Football and the whole thing is one big machine. You're not going to school like everyone else, practices are GRUELING and EXHAUSTING!!! What's funny... If I knew at 15 what I knew at 25 I would have spent all those extra calories consuming the Physics, Spanish, Chemistry and Trigonometry classes I was taking attempting to get the attention of Colleges.
