Cherubini-Muti!!! Grande performance.
As a historical fact. The Archbishop of Paris decided to ban Master Cherubini's Requiem Mass (in C minor) for using female voices in 1834. After this Cherubini composed this beautiful and powerful Requiem Mass for male voices in D minor in 1836 which was played on his own funeral. Once again Thank You Signore Stefano, I recommend strongly his 2nd Solemn Mass in D minor (1811). Just superb
As far as i know, the authorities had criticised his use of female voices in the earlier work (requiem in Cm) composed in 1816, commemorating the anniversary of the execution of King Louis XVI of France - there was no ban. Cherubini than wrote a Requiem in D minor (1836).
This version by Riccardo Muti is by far the best available, particularly because of its measured tempos. No hurry, just the joy and solemnity of music.

I must admit that before going through your videos I only knew Cherubini by name, I've been going through his work this week, awesome. Italians really know their way around requiems, don't they? Going through Salieri, Sgambati; Cherubini, to the greatest and probably the most famous requiem of them all, of course everyone knows of wich I'm talking about
Cherubini was most highly respected by Beethoven especially his choral music which Beethoven most often made reference to.

The Introitus reminds me of the Ascension monastery which we went to a lot before the pandemic. It has such a beautiful male choir (the singing is beautiful, not the males). It's an Eastern Orthodox monastery and the choir sings _a cappella_ as it is in Eastern Orthodox tradition. This, excluding the instrumental intermissions, is very _a cappella_ too since the instruments double the voices.

I have sung this masterpiece ....very difficult to sing for the tenors....
Indeed. Cherubini choral works are most demanding for any singer.
This work is written especially for the tenors so we are not surprise by the techical demand require for the performance.
In every performance I’ve heard, the tenors have a few points at which they sound like the damned crying out in agony. Very top of their range.
The tenors at the top of their range crying out “huic ergo parce, Deus!” sound almost as if they’re already damned. I wouldn’t blame Cherubini if by the time he wrote this he’d become a cynical old man. Still one of my favorite Requiem settings.

I would really like this sung at my funeral Mass but nowadays the chance is about zero. Maybe at a memorial concert if I set aside enough money to hire choristers and other musicians? Barring disasters I should be able to afford it!
But I will be too dead to care. Under any scenario I can imagine it wouldn’t matter to me if it happened. Heaven, Hell, prolonged Purgatory, reincarnation, total obliteration, anything else: I WOULD NOT CARE whether it was performed or not!
Still it’s a lovely piece and I wish Cherubini eternal happiness if only for creating it…
Good God, it's better than Mozart's! No wonder Beethoven once said Cherubini was the greatest living composer besides himself of course...

The beginning of the M requiem is masterly, the rest written by Sussmayr etc. is admittedly somewhat weak.
