The French Beethoven is given full justice here by Mssr. Minkowski & the Louvre musicians. Goya's state portrait of the handsome officer goes well with the Napoleonic era theme.
To my ears the opening has more of a Mozartian character (figuration reminiscent of Marriage of Figaro for example). There is a lightness of touch and thought which is not particularly Beethovenian. The counterpoint is lighter and has, to my ears, the quality of the comic theatre about it. Quite hard to pull off - so three cheers to Mehul. (Alas I cannot get the acute accent over the ‘e’ ).
