  • Sure, here are some tips on laying a patio:
    1. Plan and measure: Before you start laying your patio, make sure you have a clear plan and accurate measurements. This will help you determine the amount of materials you need and ensure that your patio is the right size and shape.
    2. Choose the right materials: There are many different materials you can use for your patio, including concrete, pavers, and natural stone. Consider the look you want to achieve, as well as the durability and maintenance requirements of each material.
    3. Prepare the area: Before you start laying your patio, you need to prepare the area. This involves removing any grass, weeds, or debris, and leveling the ground. You may also need to add a layer of gravel or sand to create a stable base.
    4. Lay the patio: Once the area is prepared, you can start laying your patio. Start at one corner and work your way out, laying each piece of material in a straight line. Use a level to ensure that each piece is even and flat.
    5. Cut and shape the materials: Depending on the shape of your patio, you may need to cut and shape some of the materials to fit. Use a saw or chisel to make precise cuts, and wear protective gear to avoid injury.
    6. Fill the gaps: Once your patio is laid, you may need to fill in the gaps between the materials. This can be done with sand or gravel, which will help to stabilize the patio and prevent weeds from growing.
    7. Add finishing touches: Finally, add any finishing touches to your patio, such as edging or decorative elements. This will help to give your patio a polished and professional look.
    Remember, laying a patio can be a challenging and time-consuming project, so don't be afraid to ask for help or hire a professional if you need it. With the right materials and techniques, you can create a beautiful and functional outdoor space that you'll enjoy for years to come.

    its easy to pick loads of holes in this, lifting techniques 15:47, handling cement with the bare hands 6:40, wearing shorts, and a pair of trainers, kneeling on wet mortar 8:20, that's quite a deep bed under the tiles, 240 cables trailing about the place 13:17, 13:08 no dust mask, but this is a nice job, it looks lovely and clean at the end.

    Absolutely amazing job. If that was my patio I would be so reassured right now that my money was spent well. I've just moved into a new build and need to get some paving done in the garden. You just set my bar high. I'm going back and forth between slate (from Wales actually) or porcelain. I like how modern the porcelain tiles look but I also love the rustic natural look of real stone. Either way it's still a lot of money as I'm looking at 80m² in total.

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Tough choice contemporary and rustic why not go for both just zone it off with something. Some stone do have some great marbleised patterns that porcelain will never have I do really like that.
      My rate for porcelain is £170m2 if that helps stone a bit less

    I am from Tunisia and this is exactly how we do our patios and exterior space , some peoples even use Terrazzo tiles . I have some cement tiles that I wanted to lay with Mortar the same way you did here , and everyone I asked here in Florida was like chocked lol 😂 they only lay sand here and lay pavers on top of it that’s it . No ones uses cement to lay pavers or tiles outside ... i finally tried to do the job and I am almost done , it was a first experience and not bad . But you did an amazing job in this video .

    @Tidybricks Landscaping, great workmanship! Your videos / tutorials are some of the best on You Tube. Good to see you're showing all steps and not hiding any trade secrets. How do you work out your tile pattern / layout beforehand considering it's a bit of a puzzle with the different size tiles? Do you have many cuts to make on the outer edge? Cheers.

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went with the pattern layout provided but you might not notice I kind of screwed the pattern a bit at one point. Still looks the biz mostly down to having a boarder around the edge as a picture frame as I call it. That did take all bank holiday Monday to do but really with that extra effort 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Nice job. My guys do like to use a slightly wetter mix, but there will be no problem with the primer use. Its amazing how many so called Landscapers who dont use the slurry on porcelain slabs telling customers it will be fine! 👍

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Years ago I always used a bricklaying type mix for laying slabs then I watched a couple of Marshall’s online TH-cam videos on mix texture and it was a lot drier than I would normally use so I went with that never looked back. And yes it’s all about the primer the most important part of tile installation it sticks like glue once down you’ll never get it up unless you smash it up.

    A semi dry lean mix is also a vital part of the drainage, it allows any water that passes through the grout joint to seep through to the sub base and then into the ground below instead of sitting between the slab and cement bed, which could freeze during the winter months and lift a slab.
    This is very often over looked

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Semi dry or wet it all dries the same but it’s more difficult if you use a wetter mix they can move more and excess cement rises to the top through the joints and makes the face of the tile dirty. As long as you use a good primer it’ll set the same.

      Hey john it’s all good you most likely will enjoy using when you get your first contract for it, I laid stone for years loved it but always hated stone sizes always varied in size so you ended up with tight joints wide joints drove me insane but here’s where the porcelain comes in every tile exactly the same as the last finally you can use spaces and that helps you out in the long run but y0u will need a new type saw and be advisable to get a table saw because now you’ll have to be millimetre perfect 👌
      About your question on laying on type1 or concrete either way will work, I normally lay on type1 but will be moving on up and start laying on concrete with a polished surface then you could use a screeding trowel and put them down as you would tiling a indoor ceramic floor.

    Thank you for this video, I’ve had porcelain tiles laid wrongly, builders came back and removed them but never came back to lay them, I’m disabled and needed it all flush with my doors, slot drain is in front of doors, now I have a concrete patio with tile adhesive stuck to it and all my 600 x 600 porcelain tiles are a mess. The levels were all wrong and the tiles started moving because the adhesive was coming up the sides where the grout should be. My question is do we smash up the patio and start again or can the patio be saved and levelled, also the tiles have adhesive and grout stuck to them how do I get them clean? My patio is about the same size as this one, I can’t afford to get a professional in now but I’m hoping you will be able to give me some advice. Thank you

    • @tidybrickslandscaping

      Hi Christopher if it’s done right then it’ll be fine. As for the porcelain it’s as tough as they get so it’s a better choice over some sandstone products otherwise. Just make sure they don’t tot and dab the corners when laying. It’s got to be a full bed then it should be fine as nothing could get through the joints that way. A liquid grout is the new way to go it’ll fill any gaps that might be there.

      As for a sealant I wouldn’t use it on a fresh patio for at least 6\12 months after laying to let any possible salt out otherwise you can trap the salt in the slab under the sealant and it will then bubble up and look really bad I’ve made that mistake once before never to be repeated.

    Great video. I’m soon to lay a porcelain patio at home. I’m a landscaper but haven’t laid porcelain before and I’m not experienced with drainage which is the part I struggle with most especially on a large patio. My patio is 6.5m deep so not sure what to do about drainage. 6.5m seems a bit long to just slope it away from the house on to the lawn as the drop will be quite a lot over hat distance. Any recommendations? Thanks very much!

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Rupert I’m here to help where I can as for the drainage for this new patio the rule of thumb is for every 1 meter away from the house the height should drop down be 10mm so over your distance 6.5m it’s only 65mm depth of a brick so not to noticeable.. and if it’s your first time laying porcelain when you make cuts you’ll need a porcelain blade and you must cut wet water to stop the tiles from chipping. I lay porcelain all the time now years ago I only laid stone which is fine but I always hated stone slabs being different sizes all the time. Porcelain tiles are all exactly the same size which helps so much allows you to use 5 mm spaces too.

    Great video. We want to lay our own porcelian tiles. When we had builders round to do the front they laid hardcore and compacted it. Do we then just need to lay the sharp sand directly onto this or do we need to mix the sand with cement first? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Also what did you put on top of the hardcore? You suddenly have the top layer of the base down but don't say what it is. Thanks

      Hi Charlotte yes correct on the hardcore base then it’s a cement mix between 30/40mm deep here’s my tips video 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

      @@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks :) Did you put a layer of stone dust before the cement mix and compact it down?

      Yes I did just to fine tune the levels. When compacted it feels like concrete very compact. 👍

    What did you use to cut the tiles. Can they be cut with a consaw and diamond blade just like sandstone or limestone slabs?

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You’ll need porcelain blades and cut with water to prevent chipping . Try this guy on his name is Phil he supplies nearly all Marshall’s installers with blades. He’s on Twitter @pulvexdiamond

      Stressful times doing the liquid grouting these days still feels really wrong in doing that way. Must be fully prepared every time in case it goes off to quick 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

    Do you have to use an adhesive for porcelain slabs ? I was told they do not stick well to mortar ?

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That reason is because they have quite a smooth back to the tile so yes always good to use a primer.
      I always use this one. www.marshalls.co.uk/gardens-and-driveways/product/paving-primer

    Fantastic video, mate! Hello from the other side of the world. Question - in several years of research for patio projects, this is the first time I've ever seen a method where you lay concrete out as you put out the tile. I think it's brilliant. What do you find the benefits of this method over just pouring a cement slab then putting down the file first? (It *seems* to me like this method would crack easily because it doesn't have expansion lines in the concrete base.)

    • @tidybrickslandscaping
      @tidybrickslandscaping  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching Christopher but I must quickly say no concrete was used on this job the base consists of hard-core 100 mm and then around 50 mm cement the tiles laid on there no need for expansion joints as the ground is flexible from the hard-core 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

      @@tidybrickslandscapinghe means the mix you used to lay the pavers, concrete is cement mixed with aggregate, granted the aggregate (stones) are bigger in ballast but ising sharp sand is still a concrete mix

    My patio slopes away from house and I want to put aco drain at bottom of patio. There is no pitch on patio going across the way. So how do I pitch the aco drain across the patio as it wouldn't be flush at other end as it would be a few inches lower

    • @tidybrickslandscaping

      Why do you want drainage at the bottom of the patio can’t you just let the water soak into the grass

    I've laid a few patios in the past few years starting with cheap concrete slabs on a wet mix but easy to level but do move around alot then tried a drier mix with some heavy sawn yorkies a bit harder and slower to lay but I think personally better in the long run

    • @tidybrickslandscaping

      That’s particular grout can’t be done in the rain as the grout will dilute to much. As for sandstone it works really well but you got to be on the ball with the pressure washer 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
