its easy to pick loads of holes in this, lifting techniques 15:47, handling cement with the bare hands 6:40, wearing shorts, and a pair of trainers, kneeling on wet mortar 8:20, that's quite a deep bed under the tiles, 240 cables trailing about the place 13:17, 13:08 no dust mask, but this is a nice job, it looks lovely and clean at the end.

Absolutely amazing job. If that was my patio I would be so reassured right now that my money was spent well. I've just moved into a new build and need to get some paving done in the garden. You just set my bar high. I'm going back and forth between slate (from Wales actually) or porcelain. I like how modern the porcelain tiles look but I also love the rustic natural look of real stone. Either way it's still a lot of money as I'm looking at 80m² in total.
Tough choice contemporary and rustic why not go for both just zone it off with something. Some stone do have some great marbleised patterns that porcelain will never have I do really like that. My rate for porcelain is £170m2 if that helps stone a bit less
Were you getting high at the 1:11 mark?!🤣 All jokes aside, you showed me a much better way to do grout on my current patio project! Working smarter, not harder!
Nice job. My guys do like to use a slightly wetter mix, but there will be no problem with the primer use. Its amazing how many so called Landscapers who dont use the slurry on porcelain slabs telling customers it will be fine! 👍
Years ago I always used a bricklaying type mix for laying slabs then I watched a couple of Marshall’s online TH-cam videos on mix texture and it was a lot drier than I would normally use so I went with that never looked back. And yes it’s all about the primer the most important part of tile installation it sticks like glue once down you’ll never get it up unless you smash it up. Thanks for the message Michael always good to hear from fellow landscapers 👍🏴
A semi dry lean mix is also a vital part of the drainage, it allows any water that passes through the grout joint to seep through to the sub base and then into the ground below instead of sitting between the slab and cement bed, which could freeze during the winter months and lift a slab. This is very often over looked
Mark Neilson no it doesn’t it’s a solid mortar that resists algae too unlike the Porous grouts that I find never really set that hard as you can push a screw driver it normally after a week or two.

Great job mate I'm a tiler from Scotland have u ever used the lashing system for the tiles gives great finish basically it's a lash with hole up the joint was a big wedge stay safe mate
Semi dry or wet it all dries the same but it’s more difficult if you use a wetter mix they can move more and excess cement rises to the top through the joints and makes the face of the tile dirty. As long as you use a good primer it’ll set the same. Actually just uploaded a new video today using the primer. 👍🏴
Thanks for the quick reply. 5mm it is then. Looking for a very similar finish to this but with 900 x 450 slabs. Not quite decided on exactly what I'm going for yet. Love the edge tile on this patio. I was going for gravel but changed my mind now, will be doing something very similar. Thank you
lovely job but little things can spoil it like the over cuts on the tile around the main square drain. I find its those things that caught me out in the past.
Hi yeah a brilliant job and I noticed the over cuts but I think they are possibly pencil lines the other thing I noticed is the joint line been close on the border but only a minor nit pick brill job overall
All the foresight to supply from Marshalls is anti-slip anyways as for what products around the pool I would possibly say travertine as they use that a lot in the Mediterranean countries 👍🏴
Great video I’m going to be laying a patio for the first time soon can you tell how much sharpe sand and cement I will need the size of the patio is 5m x 3m many thanks
35mm cement bed you’ll need 1 tonne of sand and about 10 bags of cement that a 4/1 ratio hope that help 👍🏴 This is the calculator I use source4me.co.uk/calculate_sub_base.php?tab=0
Beautiful job.i have a porcelain patio at home but struggle to keep it clean its quiet porous so gets a lot of rust spots from furniture. Would you recommend sealing patio. Tanx
Hi Alan yes that’s true you can get rust marks such a shame but easily solved. There’s a company called lithofin they sell a cleaner called rust ex try that it works for me 👍🏴 hope this helps
The stone dust I get I 6mm to dust love the stuff I only used it to lift some low areas to fine tune. Slightly spray with water to moisten then whacker plate 🔨 solid Hope that helps 👍🏴
Hi Tidybrick. Really enjoyed this and other videos you've made. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and skills. So... Please can you give an estimate number of years this patio will last before any shifting or movement takes place?
Thanks for watching as for the answer well if prepared properly then it should last a life time hard to stay stick around and I’ll post something if it moves but that might be 20/30 years plus possibly 👍🏴
I don't get how the jointing compound in the joints doesn't get washed away when using the power washer. Surely the compound will be wetter in the joint than on the surface of a slab with the sun on it.. Your answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi Lewis basically this material is just rapid setting grout it can be used on any material but if you do it wrong your up shit street ! Here’s my mate Dave Jessop he’ll explain it in detail.. good luck th-cam.com/video/jX_hs_wjBiM/w-d-xo.html
You’ll need porcelain blades and cut with water to prevent chipping . Try this guy on his name is Phil he supplies nearly all Marshall’s installers with blades. He’s on Twitter @pulvexdiamond
@@tidybrickslandscaping cheers mate thankyou. You've done a very nice job there BTW. Some people don't realise how much time, precision and hard work goes into doing things like this. Hat off to you mate, well done.
Glad you enjoyed it Danny as for the TH-cam experts well good luck with that. I’ve had so many people telling me I’m doing it wrong and it should be on a concrete base that seems to be quite a popular comment 👍🏴
Try this link and you’ll get some of my mates local to you. Just say I sent you 👍🏴www.marshalls.co.uk/gardens-and-driveways/approved-garden-and-driveway-installers
Tidy job Boyo :) Can I ask your advice on jointing against the house , do you use the same gap as the other tiles or a bigger gap where the tiles meet the house ?
I’ll always use a bigger gap against the house normally 10mm just incase the brickwork is running out of square a bit 5mm spaces for the tiles 👍🏴
Usually I'll they use concrete mix to get a flooring, level it, then tile by thin set, grout to finish. In this here I see a semi dry/wet mix the some type of bond on the tile , then a liquid pour of something then powerwash... seems to work here but I'm guessing there is many ways to tile
Great video. We want to lay our own porcelian tiles. When we had builders round to do the front they laid hardcore and compacted it. Do we then just need to lay the sharp sand directly onto this or do we need to mix the sand with cement first? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Also what did you put on top of the hardcore? You suddenly have the top layer of the base down but don't say what it is. Thanks
Hi Charlotte yes correct on the hardcore base then it’s a cement mix between 30/40mm deep here’s my tips video 👍🏴 th-cam.com/video/7tm_PSMln6k/w-d-xo.html
That reason is because they have quite a smooth back to the tile so yes always good to use a primer. I always use this one. www.marshalls.co.uk/gardens-and-driveways/product/paving-primer 👍🏴
Tidybricks Landscaping I think he meant PQC it stands for Paving quality concrete, it’s a lean, dry concrete mix, whacked on top of the type 1 it forms part of a rigid paving system. Your fellow welshman Johnny boy from landscaping survival teaches about it.
@Tidybricks Landscaping, great workmanship! Your videos / tutorials are some of the best on You Tube. Good to see you're showing all steps and not hiding any trade secrets. How do you work out your tile pattern / layout beforehand considering it's a bit of a puzzle with the different size tiles? Do you have many cuts to make on the outer edge? Cheers.
I went with the pattern layout provided but you might not notice I kind of screwed the pattern a bit at one point. Still looks the biz mostly down to having a boarder around the edge as a picture frame as I call it. That did take all bank holiday Monday to do but really with that extra effort 👍🏴
I love this video. It has inspired me to do some DIY but when needing something this good as in the vid, I'd ask you guys to do it and I'd happily pay top dollar for it.
Hello, We’ve just put hardcore base down and used a wacker plate. Ordered sharp sand and cement but just found out the tiles we want are porcelain. I’ve seen online that they have to be installed using adhesive or something and not the traditional way. Is that true or can we use sand cement mix and lay them? Seems you have done it here? Thanks in advance
Luke Wiltshire apparently some people say only on a concrete base but that rubbish it doesn’t actually matter it’s only people walking on patios not cars anyways so either way still works. I’m here to help 👍🏴
Great video. I’m soon to lay a porcelain patio at home. I’m a landscaper but haven’t laid porcelain before and I’m not experienced with drainage which is the part I struggle with most especially on a large patio. My patio is 6.5m deep so not sure what to do about drainage. 6.5m seems a bit long to just slope it away from the house on to the lawn as the drop will be quite a lot over hat distance. Any recommendations? Thanks very much!
Hi Rupert I’m here to help where I can as for the drainage for this new patio the rule of thumb is for every 1 meter away from the house the height should drop down be 10mm so over your distance 6.5m it’s only 65mm depth of a brick so not to noticeable.. and if it’s your first time laying porcelain when you make cuts you’ll need a porcelain blade and you must cut wet water to stop the tiles from chipping. I lay porcelain all the time now years ago I only laid stone which is fine but I always hated stone slabs being different sizes all the time. Porcelain tiles are all exactly the same size which helps so much allows you to use 5 mm spaces too. Keep me up to date for anything else Scott
Tidybricks Landscaping Hi Scott, thanks for your reply. Can I just buy a porcelain blade for my angle gender or do I need to purchase an actual wet saw cutter? If I so can you recommend one that’s suitable for a one off job? I don’t really want to pay huge money for something I may only use once. Thanks again. Ru
Rupert you can get a Rubi porcelain dry blade for your grinder 4 inch about £30 from tile shop Rubi tvr pro porcelain dry blade great blade I'm a tiler and use them day in day out mate stay safe from scotland
@@rupertwaspe344 Hire a wet cut bridge cutter with porcelain blade (if you dont have a suitable one), that way the cuts are dead strait ,and its a hell of a lot easier !
Mapei and my porcelain tile supplier highly recommend using primer or tile adhesive ontop of this sand/concrete mixture. But you didn't. Could that cause an issue long term, or do they just want me to buy it for their own interests?
I think you might of been confused by them. You paste the primer to the tile then lay it on a cement bed Here’s a video on it th-cam.com/video/fbA5dew7NTw/w-d-xo.html👍🏴

Great job mate I'm a tiler from Scotland have u ever used the lashing system for the tiles gives great finish basically it's a lash with hole up the joint was a big wedge stay safe mate
Hi, did you lay the porcelain on sharp sand mix or washed sand? Or are the the same thing?
4/1 sharp sand mix every time 👍🏴
Really nice job but as previous comments cant get my head round such a dry mix but every ones preference is different
Semi dry or wet it all dries the same but it’s more difficult if you use a wetter mix they can move more and excess cement rises to the top through the joints and makes the face of the tile dirty. As long as you use a good primer it’ll set the same.
Actually just uploaded a new video today using the primer. 👍🏴
Nice chaps
Glad you enjoyed it 👍🏴
Nice job. Can you lay porcelin tiles straight on top of damp sharp sand without wet mix?
You’ll need a hardcore base first then a cement bed my friend. Otherwise it’ll just move about with sand 👍🏴
Quality job mate. Keep up the awesome work 👍
Thx Gary glad you enjoyed it 👍🏴
Hi
Just one question if you don't put that sticky products in the back of tiles you think tiles can come of thanks
The primer definitely helps stick it down but if you haven’t you might be lucky still they should still stay in place 👍🏴
Excellent video. What joining gap/ space did you leave between tiles? Looks like 4mm or so? Really nice finish. Getting ready to lay mine!
5mm spaces tight is right I say 👍 so what type of patio are you gong for 👍🏴
Thanks for the quick reply.
Those little details make all the difference 👍🏴
Just pencil marks.
Hi yeah a brilliant job and I noticed the over cuts but I think they are possibly pencil lines the other thing I noticed is the joint line been close on the border but only a minor nit pick brill job overall
Excellent quality work, how much would something like this set you back all in? Roughly
I believe the price for that job was £8600 and I’m also back on that job today doing some extra work for his man cave 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping how much did it actually cost you
@@deanasophia2468 I think the price for that job was £7800 👍🏴
I use these at work. What cutter are you using to cut tiles/slabs
I use my rubi table saw and I’ve got a flex wet saw cs60 works a treat 👍🏴
Top job lads
Thanks honey glad you enjoyed it 👍🏴
Nice job, Caerphilly mountain snack bar is up there with the best, have one every week 👌
We snack in the same place then shame there latte machines a bit shit
🏴👍
Great video and very informative. What is the size of the spacer between each porcelain?
Hi and I used 5mm spaces and glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏴
Did u use sharp sand under the tiles 4and 1 ? It’s nicely done ,
Yep you nailed it 4;1 ratio every time and thanks 👍🏴
Great job, how long from start to finish?
That job was about 3 weeks total and I’m going back there in a couple of weeks to do some extra work 👍🏴
is this slippery when raining? what is a good product to use around a pool and deflects a lot of desert heat?
All the foresight to supply from Marshalls is anti-slip anyways as for what products around the pool I would possibly say travertine as they use that a lot in the Mediterranean countries 👍🏴
Great video I’m going to be laying a patio for the first time soon can you tell how much sharpe sand and cement I will need the size of the patio is 5m x 3m many thanks
35mm cement bed you’ll need 1 tonne of sand and about 10 bags of cement that a 4/1 ratio hope that help 👍🏴
This is the calculator I use source4me.co.uk/calculate_sub_base.php?tab=0
Thanks for that
Beautiful job.i have a porcelain patio at home but struggle to keep it clean its quiet porous so gets a lot of rust spots from furniture. Would you recommend sealing patio. Tanx
Hi Alan yes that’s true you can get rust marks such a shame but easily solved. There’s a company called lithofin they sell a cleaner called rust ex try that it works for me 👍🏴 hope this helps
Do you do a fall off with the MOT or with the Mortar?
Yes fall from the mot 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks!
Love it thanks mate
Glad you enjoyed that Pete 👍🏴
nice ,really nice ,no scrimping there ,
I don’t like to scrimp nothing but the best 👍🏴
U mention blinding off with stone dust... is that equivalent of 20mm ballast? Or something finer n different. Good job.
The stone dust I get I 6mm to dust love the stuff I only used it to lift some low areas to fine tune. Slightly spray with water to moisten then whacker plate 🔨 solid
Hope that helps 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping cherrs for that👍
Hi Tidybrick.
@@tidybrickslandscaping lol i just might still be watching😁
I don't get how the jointing compound in the joints doesn't get washed away when using the power washer. Surely the compound will be wetter in the joint than on the surface of a slab with the sun on it.. Your answer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Hi Lewis basically this material is just rapid setting grout it can be used on any material but if you do it wrong your up shit street ! Here’s my mate Dave Jessop he’ll explain it in detail.. good luck
th-cam.com/video/jX_hs_wjBiM/w-d-xo.html
What did you use to cut the tiles. Can they be cut with a consaw and diamond blade just like sandstone or limestone slabs?
You’ll need porcelain blades and cut with water to prevent chipping . Try this guy on his name is Phil he supplies nearly all Marshall’s installers with blades. He’s on Twitter @pulvexdiamond
How do you haunch porcelain tiles?
Do you just use a richer mix for the end tiles ? Thankyou
No same mix just let it dry loads and cut it off with a trowel 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping cheers mate thankyou.
You've done a very nice job there BTW. Some people don't realise how much time, precision and hard work goes into doing things like this. Hat off to you mate, well done.
@@stevenmcconkey4882 thx Steven if you think that’s nice check this one out
Only time lapse but a awesome patio lites fire water 👍🏴
In Thailand I know a good tiler that also does this and is very good at it.. He does it all with lines and a transparent hose as level
That’s the old school way of getting levels and it works just as good as some gizmo that does the same. 👍🏴
Built the pyramids with water levels Def old school but hey it works
I've had medium grey porcelain tiles laid and they get dirty really easily. They are matt finish (not glazed). Should I be sealing these?
You don’t need to seal porcelain tiles maybe just buy a good squeegee brush 👍🏴
Looks awesome, just going to read the comments from the typical youtube experts now...
Glad you enjoyed it Danny as for the TH-cam experts well good luck with that. I’ve had so many people telling me I’m doing it wrong and it should be on a concrete base that seems to be quite a popular comment 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping well I know nothing. Never done it before. And this has helped
Danny Zuko good luck then Danny any questions feel free to ask if you fancy having a go yourself 👍
I know I am late on this one but where is the weed stop under all that filling.
No weed membrane needed as the tiles were laid on a full cement bed only use weed membrane is for driveways 👍🏴
Another fantastic job love your videos mate when can you come to Birmingham to do mine ?
Try this link and you’ll get some of my mates local to you. Just say I sent you 👍🏴www.marshalls.co.uk/gardens-and-driveways/approved-garden-and-driveway-installers
Tidy job Boyo :) Can I ask your advice on jointing against the house , do you use the same gap as the other tiles or a bigger gap where the tiles meet the house ?
I’ll always use a bigger gap against the house normally 10mm just incase the brickwork is running out of square a bit
5mm spaces for the tiles 👍🏴
did you put the slurry down twice ??
No just the ones back of the tile nice and fresh 👍🏴
Usually I'll they use concrete mix to get a flooring, level it, then tile by thin set, grout to finish. In this here I see a semi dry/wet mix the some type of bond on the tile , then a liquid pour of something then powerwash... seems to work here but I'm guessing there is many ways to tile
There’s lots of ways do lay a patio it’s not rocket science really 👍🏴
Great video. We want to lay our own porcelian tiles. When we had builders round to do the front they laid hardcore and compacted it. Do we then just need to lay the sharp sand directly onto this or do we need to mix the sand with cement first? Sorry if it's a stupid question. Also what did you put on top of the hardcore? You suddenly have the top layer of the base down but don't say what it is. Thanks
Hi Charlotte yes correct on the hardcore base then it’s a cement mix between 30/40mm deep here’s my tips video 👍🏴
th-cam.com/video/7tm_PSMln6k/w-d-xo.html
@@tidybrickslandscaping Thanks :) Did you put a layer of stone dust before the cement mix and compact it down?
Yes I did just to fine tune the levels. When compacted it feels like concrete very compact. 👍
Do you have to use an adhesive for porcelain slabs ? I was told they do not stick well to mortar ?
That reason is because they have quite a smooth back to the tile so yes always good to use a primer.
I always use this one. www.marshalls.co.uk/gardens-and-driveways/product/paving-primer
👍🏴
I knew there was a cheep way to put porcelain tile outdoor! Thanks!
Some people seem to think it always has to be on concrete well that’s not true 👍🏴
Hi, great job as said by all. So many different ways to lay it but what is your stance on laying it on a QPC?
Morning British man not sure what QPC is 👍🏴
Tidybricks Landscaping I think he meant PQC it stands for Paving quality concrete, it’s a lean, dry concrete mix, whacked on top of the type 1 it forms part of a rigid paving system. Your fellow welshman Johnny boy from landscaping survival teaches about it.
Looks really nice but the over shooting the cuts on the man holes would bug me.
I know it looks like a cut but it’s actually just a pencil mark I should of cleaned it off before I videoed 🙄👍🏴
Tidybricks Landscaping ahh fantastic you’ve just put my ocd to rest haha
Sillybolx my ocd would never allow that to happen 👍
Thanks you wellardme I’m glad you enjoyed the video 👍🏴
I wish I can get this done in my house
One day my friend you’ll get what you want 👍🏴
@@tidybrickslandscaping lord willing
Hello,
We’ve just put hardcore base down and used a wacker plate. Ordered sharp sand and cement but just found out the tiles we want are porcelain. I’ve seen online that they have to be installed using adhesive or something and not the traditional way. Is that true or can we use sand cement mix and lay them? Seems you have done it here?
Thanks in advance
Watch this video all is good don’t worry
th-cam.com/video/tdKZ4eyo5nE/w-d-xo.html
Tidybricks Landscaping Thanks so much for quick reply
Keep me up to date for anything else
Scott
