  • In today’s video for our Teatime at the Ritz I explore all the ways that older women become invisible as they age and the impact that this has on our confidence. I also suggest ways that we can change our own attitudes and beliefs about ageing in order to feel more confident.

Confidence, if I didn't put my face on, do my hair, and dress stylish, I wouldn't have any. It is those three things that give me the confidence to face my day. It is sad but some people do judge you on the way you look. There are those people that think they are better than you and are patronizing towards you, for instance, if you go in a 'posh' shop, and you don't have the right look, the assistants can be intimidating, and treat you differently than the ladies that do 'have the right look'. If I went in without my three points, that would surely happen to me.I wonder if that makes me sound vain! but that is my personality, I have always wanted to make the best of myself. My mother always said 'walk tall', and I always have, and I consider myself as good as the next person, so my confidence starts from the way I look. You don't need to have lots of expensive clothes to look stylish, it is surprising what you can find in a Charity Shop. You can look a million dollars, and be dressed for less than £20.00.

Ageism is everywhere. I like and value your thoughts Tricia.

Totally enjoyed today’s video. I sometimes have exhibited negativity and lack of confidence in my abilities and have had to give myself a stiff talking to! I feel that aging has improved me in some ways and I don’t fear the future, just wish time would slow down a little so I can catch up.

So much here to comment on Tricia ~ my 85 year old mother-in-law always says about her aches/pains/slowing down, to "oh, well this happens when you become older!" And quietly, I say deep down, "no it isn't!!" LOL I'm not going to talk myself into something I certainly don't want! Thanks for your encouragement, once again.

Important things that need to be said! Thank you -;) As a 70 yr old I find that I am treated differently even in the beauty shop I pay a great deal of money to go to. I'm made to wait as if I have nothing to do because I am an older customer while the younger clientele isn't. One can tell it's considered more impt to get their hair 'just right'. It angers me, honestly. I've begun to be more assertive about treated equally everywhere. A confident posture and attitude helps a great deal with this, I think.

Tricia, you talk such sense and I love listening to you. I'm not looking forward to when our tea at the Ritz is going to stop because everything gets back to normality 😢 Perhaps you could still do one a month, or something like that?

When my son was young (I had him when I was 43 and I’m now 60) I found a book in the library depicting a grandmother with white hair and knitting whilst sitting in a rocking chair. I thought that this image was ridiculous and not a reflection of grandmothers today, or ever. Negative notions of ageing are slowly changing thank goodness.

What about Helen Mirren and Twiggy. They are still on magazine covers and regarded as sexy. So I think that things are changing.

Helen Mirren is the sole example of a woman who is considered to be attractive at 74 - whereas the Silver Fox is a phenomenon that applies to every silver haired attractive older man was the point I was trying to make. Tx

I am 53 and loved Colombo (Peter Falk)...he is/was gorgeous .Can't see the attraction of Clooney...any man or woman who thinks they are so wonderful is totally unattractive. My opinion obviously !!

Perhaps you might ask your upmarket hair stylist whether he
can suggest an update of your hair style and soften it somewhat with layers. It is quite flat
and ageing. Obviously when the lockdown is lifted.....

That is a very rude comment Ann.

That was quite uncalled for Ann. Tricia’s hair style is sleek and elegant and
      suits her perfectly.
