    I bought an 07 Cobalt coupe off the showroom floor in late 2006. Mine was a 5 speed manual, got 40mpg on the highway. Drove it for over ten years, great car!

    Bought an 09 for my wife at 104k miles. It's now at 215k and the only actual repairs that It's needed were cam solenoids. I'm not especially a gm fan but it's been a great car and solid dependable. Parts are cheap it's decent on gas, tires are cheap. It is what it is, a good entry level car that you can send your kids off to school and not have to worry about it.

    Current owner of the sedan. Same color. I got 180k miles. Love the car most repairs I can do myself. Changed the ignition coil and replaced the compressor myself. It’s pretty zippy if you shift yourself. I have an auto. Goes to 100 easy.

    Nice fair review. I just picked up a 2006 LS in the same color and coupe style from my mom to give to y 16 year-old twins to use. Ours only has 21k miles on it so it’s got a ton of life left and it’s been well taken care of. Great practical cars with a solid economy engine.

    I purchased a 2009 Cobalt sedan new in Nov. of 2008. One of the best Chevies I ever owned. For me it was great looking, solid, had superb outer panel fit and I loved the satellite radio. I do remember the seat and door panels got extremely dirty after only one year! It was my first car with a DIC (driver information center) that I also enjoyed. Oh, it was also extremely good on snow and ice.
    I always liked the rear 3/4 view of the coupes. The rear window and tail light styling are reminiscent of the first generation Chevy Corvair coupes.

    I remember seeing these new when I was in elementary school. Admittedly I really liked the coupe. One of my teachers had a bright red one that as an 8 year old at the time seemed like the coolest thing in the world! I particularly thought the rear mounted antenna was interesting for reasons I do not entirely remember offhand.

      Yes! I liked the rear mounted antenna on my 2009 Cobalt. Brought back memories of cars of the 1950's with rear mounted antennas (I was a a school age boy in the 1950's).

    I had a '08 sedan that I bought with about 25k miles. Ran it up to over a quarter million miles and finally got rid of it when pretty much the entire suspension and steering finally wore out in 2019. It still had the original battery, only a touch of rust and was probably the most reliable car I've ever owned. Oil, filters, wiper blades, tires, brakes and an interior door handle are the only things I ever changed. Not exciting but it always got me there.

      Government regulation, specifically CAFE standards. Since the 70s the US auto companies have been forced to redesign everything on a more or less ongoing basis for about 50 years. That's why the cobalt disappeared for the Cruze and whatnot. And why the great pushrod v6s are gone.
      The Japanese brands make cars that don't ride great and which allow a bunch of road noise.

    I love my ‘08 LT coupe - same paint as yours. Didn’t pay much for it and haven’t had any significant issues with it other than some minor electrical and sensor fixes.
    I swapped out the stock head and tail lights with smoked LED assemblies, blacked out the badges, repainted some of the black trim with plastidip, added window tint, new exhaust, new tires, new motor mounts, new throttle body, black hubcaps, new stereo header and speakers, custom LEDs in the interior and heated seats, plus a few engine mods.
    All in all cost me a whole lot less than a newer car and added a lot of the features you’d otherwise get. Been fun to tinker with on weekends.
    It looks faster than it is but keeps up well enough with modern models and the turn radius is great. I get people trying to race me in way faster cars and I’m like, nope, but I appreciate the impression.
    Plus that ecotec just keeps tickin and the fuel economy is dang nice to have especially right now. Anyhow, thanks for the review! Didn’t think I’d see another on TH-cam until they’re genuinely vintage, but I agree they definitely hold up.

    Still have mine, still love mine! Sometimes he needs a minute to recalibrate himself but still 16 years later I barely touch the gas and I’m easily at 55. Gas mileage is still great. I was almost completely on empty last time I needed to fill up and a little over 10 gallons was $42. The interior might not have bells and whistles but under the hood there’s plenty of heart. I don’t think the cobalt got the proper credit it deserved from people but 16 years later parts are affordable and it’s still such a fun little car to drive.

    I've owned both the '05 LT Cobalt & Pontiac G5 '09. I'll take the G5 any day hands down. Granted they're the "same" car but Pontiac changed some things like the seats & interior styling. Along with different Fuel/timing maps from both cars of the same year. The clutch was never unresponsive or heavy, just don't skip leg day lol. What a lot of people don't know is that the Ecotec was designed by lotus; They're almost bullet proof... I ran the LT for over a year with a blown head gasket & it just kept going. Even if you were to get an LAP engine not the LSJ; you just need new rods & pistons for internals (add an EatonM62 or a turbo) and you can see 400WHP easy; In fact they've had these engines up to 800HP. As for rusting, if you live near any salt water or have long winter months, any car will rust.. With proper maintenance you shouldn't have an issue; talking to the ones who never wash their car. My G5 with almost 200k miles still pulls hard. Headers, SS cat back, intake, tune & some nice lightweight 17" wheels; HP tuners is reporting an avg of 165 vs stock 148. Overall a great learning car to wrench on or do modifications to as parts are cheap in price. My only honest gripes 1:) No passenger Door lock cylinder(It's just not there) 2:) Window motors are slow AF 3:)The infamous "Ecotick".

Other than oil changes and brakes this car has cost me nothing until year 15, when I decided to put a bit into it to keep it going another 5 years safely. Also, that ticking noise you're referring to, especially if there is low oil in these engines is the timing components. These are interference engines. The tensioner guide breaks and rattles along the timing chain. Keeping the timing components properly lubricated will keep these cars running.

    Chevy naming their compacts C is like Ford naming everything but the E-Series with an F. Remember when they tried to do that in the late 00s?
    It was a cheap car with decent engines and a dangerous steering column. Like you said, it serves a purpose and that's OK. The coupe looks pretty good. My co-worker had one of these as her first car.
    I wish small cheap coupes were still a thing. You used to be able to get a coupe of every compact for a little bit of sport. Honda held out the longest with the Civic but the sales just aren't there any more.

    I own one of these (sedan version)...mine has controls for the radio on the right side of the wheel, and the radio does have a 3.5mm aux port...the front speakers dont work tho, because of some design issue with the radio. They replaced it once under warranty and they worked again for about a year before failing again. The shifter is garbage, it has a habit of breaking internally in a way that causes a pin to fall out so it will no longer activate the park position switch (cause by just putting a hole through the plastic shifter stalk for the pin that actuates the switch, but not reinforcing the stalk around the hole in any way), which means you have to use the manual release button under/inside the steering column to get the key out. I just deal with it, it's not worth spending hundreds of dollars to replace the part when GM never redesigned the part to address the defect that causes it to break in the first place. The interior is absolutely cheap, but the drivetrain is rock fkin solid. Mine has 120,000 miles on it, and aside from normal maintenance (and a warranty recall on the gas tank for developing cracking causing a leak), the only problems Ive had under the hood are an oil pan gasket leak and a seized-up starter. Even at that age, in city driving I still get 29-30mpg, and I can make the 850 mile drive to see my family back north on exactly 2 tanks of gas, so about 35-36mpg highway.
    For the $11k I spent to buy it in 2008, I've been pretty happy with it.

    I had an 06 LS sedan for 15 years. Good car except that it had to have the front struts replaced 4 times and I only put 100k on it. Those Michigan roads didn't help.

    Can't believe they lost the cavalier name to cobalt and cruze. Both of those are literally a modern cavalier

    • @solomongreen9468
      @solomongreen9468 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jonathan A I always thought a clean well kept cavalier made a nice ride, my neighbor drove one back an forth for years.

    • @Stressless2023
      @Stressless2023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jonathan A I always considered the Cobalt just a Cavalier with a different name. The Cruze seemed like a much different car than both. I think the Cobalt failed to meet sales expectations more-so because GM mistakenly thought the Cavalier name was too damaged to reuse it. I think Chrysler made the same mistake with the Dodge Dart, bet if it had been named Neon which it kind of looked like anyway, that its future would have been different also.

      @Stressless2023 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Jonathan A I didn't even know or care who you are. I was just commenting an opinion and for some reason you feel attacked... Weird! The Cavalier and Cobalt were alot alike, both had cheap tacky interiors with little styling, similar driving dynamics despite the newer chassic under the Cobalt, and looked alike. The Cruze was a huge leap forward in every measure.

    If you could get past the deadly ignition recalls and get those repaired as well as the parking brake and power steering recalls this car is a gem. My grandma had this car for 13 years and it had been through being sideswiped, ran into a ditch, and backed into, but it still ran like a dream. We all loved that car no matter how cheap it was. It was our 2008 Chevy Cobalt LT sedan.

    I had an 09 sedan. I had so many fucking problems. The key fell out of the keyhole several times, and would get stuck many other times, even after 2 dealer "fixes". Check engine light and misfire at 44k miles, an auto so it got shit mpg. Windy windows were nice but the transmission gave out when i was at a friend's while parked, it rolled down a ravine and hit a tree. Good riddance.
