I own a 2004, I bought new for ~$10,000. 275,000+ miles later, it is still running strong. No major issues, other than typical maintenance stuff. Main flaw is it eats light bulbs. Also the check engine light came on after about 6 months, and never went off. After multiple sensors and what not, I said to hell with it. Truck runs fine.
The timing on these trucks is insanely tight as per the way GM programmed the PCM. After 150k or so, the timing chain can stretch and ever so slightly, or the tensioner guide can loosen and ta-da, you get a near perm timing code from that point on, even if the truck basically still runs fine. This happened my 2006 and was too expensive and too much trouble than it was worth to fix, I just used my OBD2 code reader and deleted the code every time it popped up right up until I traded it in.
You mention no cruise control but I can clearly see it on the left hand stalk of the steering wheel after you say it. It is the button on the end of the stalk with a small switch on it to turn it on or off. I just bought one that’s 4x4 with the 5 speed. Awesome truck!!
Also stupefying that many vehicles it costs perhaps thousands more than the automatic. The cheapest model of something like the Versa being manual I'd shrug and figure makes sense to get somebody to pay up if they don't want to drive manual. Whereas the opposite...
2.9 litres is pretty big displacement for a 4 cylinder engine. Toyota had a 3.0 4 cylinder in the 2000's that they used in their Prado SUVs and Hilux trucks overseas (it was a diesel engine).
Porsche also used a 3.0 liter in the later 944s and the 968. It was a larger version of their 2.7 which was a larger version of their 2.5, which was the 5.0 V8 from the 928 cut in half
I have the same exact truck. You do get cruise control, it's on the left-hand side. Once you turn it on and shift gears it'll turn back off. You do have it though. Move the switch over, and press the button on the end of the stick to engage it.
The fact that these four bangers weren't used in a wide array of vehicles doesn't affect parts availability all that much. They share a majority of their components with the 5 and 6 cylinder variants of the Atlas engine.
Perfect size truck to zip in and out of Home Depot parking spaces without worrying about side swiping other cars plus awesome and small to get thru alley ways. After all, the construction business takes you to everywhere & anywhere. Scooting a mid size Colorado between two buildings is perfect so you don't wind up carrying 100 lbs -five gallon pails of spackle. Lol, sometimes the bigness of an F150 just doesn't get the job done but a frisky 4cyl mid size will .
I have been thru 2 versions of this exact truck in black, a 2006 and now since 2020, a 2012 model. I love this truck for alot of the exact reasons you have stated, but honestly, she is the last of her kind. An endangered species of truck, the basic little to no frills, still somewhat compact truck with a stick and a 4 banger, even if it is the biggest gas 4 cylinder I've seen! The Colly is alot of fun to drive, even winding that DOHC 2.9L out to 6k rpms is a blast to me and is surprisingly quick in the upper RPM range. Best launch I've gotten was approximately 7.3 seconds, 0-60, more than enough to get out of the way of it's own butt. Currently at 90k on the odometer and I've had far less minor issues with the 2012 than I did with the 2006, but both have been great trucks. 😎👍
I've got a 2012 gmc canyon with the 2.9 with an automatic transmission. It's a great little truck! I'd love to manual swap it one day as the automatic transmission is junky in my opinion. Other than that no complaints it's takes a good beating on the weekends and gets pretty good mileage (18-20 in the city)!
My grandpa has a Colorado with the automatic. He let me drive it on the road when I was 13. I’m not much of a truck guy but that’s definitely a vehicle I may consider.
From what I'm told MT GM made pickups haven't been available to individuals for many years . You had to order one and register for business. Few people I knew back then tried to get them without any luck and had to rely on crazy aftermarket prices.
In 2011 I had a new 2011 Colorado z71 at my job. It was awesome. And I have wanted one ever since i left that job. I just bought a 2023 Trail Boss. It’s fantastic. I love being back in a truck.
I owned a 1984 S10 king cab for 12 years. Best vehicle ever owned. V6 engine. These Colorados were cool. Except for the 4 bangers and 5cyl. I don't think so. But could be a decent truck 4cyl for light duty. ❤
Love AR5’s with the 3.5 my first was a crew cab which on the third 4l60 got the Aisin. They work but temperamental after 6. Factory redline 6.3k rpm. Everyone owned been tuned over 7k 15 years strong.
I own a 2007 Isuzu I290, it’s basically a Colorado it has 144,627 mi, I purchased it ne, 6:36 it runs great except for once with I had that stupid passkey lock issue, that was resolved with a $100 amazon part, I am happy with my 2007.
3:24 - 3:33 - The CC is on the turn signal stock - I have said it before, and I'll say it again - You should be including the stalks in your interior detailing.
The fact you drove to me state lol to drive whoever owns it... makes me happier 😁 agreed, I wanted a 2006 Manual shorty in yellow, black themed back in my highschool day
if you want to drive a car that isn't friendly to beginners that is manual try a toyota corolla IM. i'm going to guess that truck's clutch is heavy but confident about its engages like my s10. imagine that weight. but a paper thin bite point and if u miss it a little bit your shook all around with a super laggy dbw where you have to componsate that with the clutch and actually low key power shift 1-3 because the delay in the gas is so awful. that the car will shake you.
I drove a similar Colorado with an auto when I worked at my local Napa. It was absolutely trashed. So I had some fun abusing it while delivering parts.
The one person I knew with the first gen hated it because literally everything was a problem. A complete nightmare. But the orange paint was beautiful.
@@scott8919Ive had a first gen since 06 daily comuter to work it now has 250k miles on the clock and have never had a problem with it just normal wear and tear.

He didn’t notice the cruse control location😂

I got it to 200k and get an used 50k transmission labor and part $2500. Still running strong now
Way cheaper ownership than Tacoma ( used part way more expensive)

It's pretty sad that manual transmission vehicles are disappearing 😕

All my 355’s but one posses the AR5
Wish they would do away with slippery CVTs.
Always loved the simplicity and styling of the first gen Colorado
The rubber behind the clutch is hilarious 😂
Good luck shifting with wet boots on. stalled a couple times in one of my old manual cars

My daily is a 2.9 auto crew cab in blue, its a hand me down and it was our family hauler that was also great for hauling things
LOL Zack, the cruise control is located on the multi-function stock 😆

The 3.7 5cyl were good, it's the 3.5 5cyl that had problems.
Cool little tike. Perfect for everything a person needs to do. ❤
I think I saw a cruise control icon on the end of the turn signal stalk, maybe a strange place for it but looks like it's there
The fact it’s easier to get a massive truck on the road and harder to get a compact truck like a Colorado or ranger just sucks
Manual ✅

You do have cruise control. It’s on the stalk.
I find it funny that it has auto headlights but manual windows
doesn't it have cruise control on the turn signal stalk?
I just traded for a 2018 colorado base wt...2.5 liter,6 speed manual...love it.

“👈🏼bed” that had me laughing so hard
traveled and lived out of this thing for a year. awesome little truck.
Tell you people one thing, GM has all the capability, experience and money to build high quality, reliable vehicles. Problem is they just don't....
The fact you drove to me state lol to drive whoever owns it... makes me happier 😁 agreed, I wanted a 2006 Manual shorty in yellow, black themed back in my highschool day
The Colorado/dmax/rodeo in Australia all had ac from 03 on in Australia. But your example is a swb version, not the long bed single cab.
Nearly 200k going 💪
Honestly,
This is a work truck.
This to me embodies what a WORK TRUCK is. a truck i can use daily. i would buy it, if i ilived in america.
He says no cruise while showing the switch. Maybe it doesn't work?
Great little truck
only problem i ever had was the abs sensor went bad and would randomly brake ands shut off
I have an 07 Crew cab with the inline 5 cylinder and my wife always complains about the ride. The suspension is pretty stiff, it rides like a semi 😂.

It's has Cruise, the best cruise design, GM on the blinker
Very cool
i was hoping this was a 5 cylinder till u said 4 cylinders 😢
How’s the gas mileage? On this .. good for commute?
My extended cab gets about 24 mpg on the highway. Two wheel drive.
I drove a similar Colorado with an auto when I worked at my local Napa. It was absolutely trashed. So I had some fun abusing it while delivering parts.
8:09 some people say differently when they see my first gen. They just don't understand its purpose built
W MANZ
They had a 5 cylinder
As well
I had to look it up. 2.9 is a four cylinder. The five cylinder was a 3.7l. Today I learned a four cylinder was indeed offered.
I love mine!
A work truck with a manual isn't supposed to have tall gearing. That would mean it's built for fuel economy, not work.
Mine has cruise it’s just wierd to get into
I always Iiked these, these are better than the junky Colorado’s GM is making today.

s-10 S-15 and colorado 04-12 compact pickup. 13+ colorado becomes a midsize truck
At 6:51 it says vortec 3500 on the motor…. So you didn’t do your research on the vehicle you were driving very well… wrong engine you had the 5cyl
We have a 07 canyon bright red 30k miles hardly seen any winters whatsoever automatic, those 2.9s and the 5 cylinder engines are made by Mitsubishi

Trucks with manual transmissions🤮😖☹️😡👿
Trucks with manuals are great. They're not for soy boys, they're for men who want to engage with their trucks and who value simplicity over fanciness.
I love having control of not only the vehicle direction, but the wheel RPM, engine braking is a big plus too.
