    Nice video. I will have to say, the best music that I heard in this video was the sound of that 520 baling hay.

    JUst amazing when I was a kid we never had the drive shaft teck and the baling teck everything was done by hand.
    Well most of it was but I have been so blessed to have grown up through it all and see the changes over the years.
    Yes we had the balers but they were run by a motor on the baler not from the tractor.
    Bales of hay were stacked in the field and later came to pick it up. We thought nothing of it at that time.
    I am in my late 70's and have enjoyed seeing all the changes. thanks for your great video.

      There's been a lot of change. I believe my grandpa's first baler was a John Deere 116 wire tie, and then he had a 14T before finishing his farming career with one of the later Deere models at the time. My dad started out with a 24T and then this 328 that we have now. Amazing the changes over the years!

    This brings back memories of my life on the farm in the fifties and sixties. We had a 520 too. Good all around tractor. Nice video.

      Yeah they were nice tractors. Deere still had a simple two-cylinder engine with a lot of extra features for the day.

    Glad to see you are still working the old two cylinders, from the videos I have watched you have at least three, 50, 520 and 720. As I stated in another video, your farm is one of the best in all aspects that I can see, i.e. fields, equipment and the maintaining of your barn and other out buildings.

      Thank you very much for your kind words!
      We actually have have a fourth two-cylinder, a 1948 John Deere A, and that one is restored. We like working them some yet!

    In 1975, I bought a John Deere 720 diesel ES. at a farm sale. We already had a John Deere 336 square baler with a thrower. It was amazing how well the 720 handled the baler. It would hold itself back going down the steep hills here in NE Iowa, even when fully loaded. I love the sound of the 2 cylinder tractors. Takes me back in time.
    Thanks for sharing. I will be posting videos of my 3 old 2 cylinder tractors and my very rare 2520 John Deere diesel.

    What's the bale flinger called? Is that part of the JD 328, or an accessory? Does it run off hydraulics from the Baler?

    • @farmgrowncountrystrong
      @farmgrowncountrystrong  ปีที่แล้ว

      It's generally called a kicker or a thrower. It's an option from Deere. Hydraulics do power it. It has a ram that powers the throwing.

    Looks like quite the thrower mechanism. Ive never seen one in person. Very cool tractor aswell. Anc freshly painted pick up on the bailer...hahaha

    • @farmgrowncountrystrong
      @farmgrowncountrystrong  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the John Deere thrower on it, the one they had from the factory. JD had a 'kicker' while a lot of the other companies had a belt setup for throwing the bales. That's actually the original pickup also, just not a lot of bales through it! We do 1000-2000~ per year, so not that much use.

  • @rosehower

    do you think a 520 could hay on a hill? which way is safer, going straight up and down the hill, or along the hill left and right?

    • @farmgrowncountrystrong
      @farmgrowncountrystrong  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the hay wasn't too thick I think it could bale on a hill. I think up or down a hill would be safer than the sides. Going down a hill with a narrow front with a lot of weight behind can be a headache also. One thing about a narrow front like that is that it would be a lot tippier on any hill.

    • @farmgrowncountrystrong
      @farmgrowncountrystrong  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah a diesel 520 would be a good little tractor. I think we usually get 150 or so in a wagon.

    Can you expalin the mechanics of the kicker/thrower?

    • @farmgrowncountrystrong
      @farmgrowncountrystrong  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's hydraulic driven. There's belts that run off of the baler's flywheel to a small pulley on a hydraulic pump. There's a lever that sticks up in the middle of the kicker that will trip when a bale is far enough a long. When the lever trips a hydraulic cylinder swings the kicker and launches the bale. You also can adjust the pressure of the kicker, thus adjusting how far/high it will throw a bale.

  • @Meat_smuggler

    How far you reckon that bailer could launch me?

    • @farmgrowncountrystrong
      @farmgrowncountrystrong  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depending how much you weighed, I would imagine a similar trajectory to a bale 🤔
