I’m one of your older viewers, but still learning about interior design. As newlyweds, my spouse and I went to art fairs and we decided 40+ years ago to only buy original art from living artists. At first it was watercolors of flowers and now our home is filled with all kinds of art and I have never worried if it will “go” with the decor. People can start out inexpensively with items like little plates, a small pencil drawing, coffee mugs, coasters, etc.

Agree with you. We’ve always bought our art from art fairs. Frequently from The Ann Arbor Art fair in Michigan. The quality of the art is outstanding. I never “match” it to the furniture. It drives me nuts when people do that. It’s soulless.

What a great topic. I love traveling and have stopped taking pictures as I’d rather enjoy the moment and not being obsessed with taking a picture that you never really look at after the day you take it. Instead I purchase quite large, meaningful and beautiful pieces of soapstone sculptures, wooden carvings, and a few Batik Indonesian fabrics, which I framed. I also have many pieces of Canadian artist and one of my top picks are an Inuit carving and a limited edition print. My all time favourites are African carvings they are absolutely magnificent. I never purchase typical tourist souvenirs as they are generally hideous.

Dune is an acquired taste. I saw the 80's version and was a 'been there' done that, next' for me. Hate pot lights, again, been there, done that, next. I didn't realize the thread count was like that. I always went for 400 - 600 count. Yes, smokers, do it out side. I do Custom Framing, nothing worse that doing an up grade to art and reusing glass and yellow slime comes off.... I usually try to upgrade you to Masterpiece or Masterpiece Acrylic to let the old glass go to the dump where it belongs.

Great video! I wish I could afford original artwork! Every time I've found an artist selling originals that I LOVE (it's gotta be love) it's way out of my budget. Several years ago, I bought a print from an artist at a local art fair, and still have it framed on my wall, but I am lusting after a real original. I just bought a peppermint-vanilla candle recently, and yes, I feel like smelling it adds something beautiful to my life! :). Thanks for the breakdown on thread count; I just always thought more was better!

As an artist I appreciate your encouragement for people to choose original art. Mass produced art will make anyone’s home seem cheap. I realize art can be expensive, but when I ask for $1000.00 for a piece, I guarantee you that I have spent at least a month to produce it, and oil plate expensive. You will never regret a unique piece of art that speaks to you!

I collect art and my collection are all original acquired locally or during my travels. I hate the masses produced art at the big book stores. There are many way you can find art. There are sidewalk art fairs; local art schools that have student art sales; and local art galleries where you can find local art. I was recently on an art tour to Oaxaca, Mexico. We were visiting a local artist gallery. There were a lot of painting on display but one painting that was behind a bunch of other painting that I was drawn to and ended up buying. I believe you don’t select art, art select you!

As for scents of any kind, please consider your pets. A dogs sense of smell for example, is 10,000 - 100,000 times (depending in the breed of dog) more acute than humans. The smoke from incense over time can also end up leaving a smoke film on items, and walls in your home - depending on how often you use it.

You can go on and on with your senseless yipyap about coffee table books, but books AREN'T doilies. Using book stacks to show off your bibelots isn't decor savvy. It's just a way of showcasing clutter. If you must have a coffee table book, it (one, oversized pictorial) is placed on an otherwise uncluttered table top within easy reach of the guest who is constrained to wait for his (her) host to complete whatever task has detained him, be it busy mixing cocktails or bringing in the hors d'oeuvre platter, or simply waiting for him to ready himself for a night out.
The table top should have nothing more than is necessary to quickly put it to use for its intended purpose. If smoking is allowed, an ashtray, cigarette holder, and lighter are provided by the host. Otherwise, a small arrangement of flowers will suffice, which can be quickly moved to the side to make room for the highball glasses and coasters or cups, saucers, and napkins being put out for the guests. The coffee table book will be moved back to book shelf when the table is used for refreshments.
A second book may be permitted, provided it is smaller and more lightweight so as to be easily picked up. Guests should never have to shuffle through a pile of ungainly tomes.
