    Serrated pins are a tremendous milestone for a new lock picker to begin to master. At first, they can seem quite scary but after some practice you will start to learn to appreciate their feedback and really enjoy working with them!
    This video will cover one of the nastier habits serrated pins have which is undersetting. An underset serrated pin can leave a new picker wondering why their lock won't open because everything feels set. Hopefully this video will help to bring some clarity!

    Another very informative video. I just started picking locks a couple weeks ago and I've been having trouble with the serrated pins. I bought the sparrow night school kit it came with three practice locks one of which has serrated pins. I've been over setting pins on that one.

    I admit i love the feel of the serrated pins, since i have put some of those as well as a couple spools in a cutaway lock and I do appreciate the video, they do help out. i have also been checking out some of the youtube video recommendations and had subscribed to some. always appreciate the info and the help that you have gave me.

      Thank you for the kind words and I am glad the video helps. I agree that serrated pins are fun but they can also be annoying (especially if the lock has all serrated pins). Once you master security pins and go back to standard pins I will be interested to hear what you like better

    • @j.gabriel8573
      @j.gabriel8573 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HelpfulLockPicker i will definitely let you know. i think i will also change up the springs for different tension and feel. i also use plain masking tape to cover up the cutaway slots so i cant see the pins and go by the clicks and feel as if it were completely enclosed. i do thank you for your words of encouragement.

    • @j.gabriel8573
      @j.gabriel8573 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HelpfulLockPicker i have to say i like the reactions of security pins way better than standard, even going back to the 2 locks i get lucky and pick as spp ( the two master locks ) i have the 3 cut away locks which i cover with tape one is still standard, one is a mix of standard, serrated and spool ( previously mentioned ) and the final is mix of both spool and serrated. now with that being said it seems for me the standard are harder to pick and the lack of feed back from them to me give more of a challenge vs security, but i prefer the security style better. its like fishing with a heavy rod vs a lighter rod where you get more play and action out of it and makes it more fun. i figured i would follow up back with you and let you know which style of pins i prefer a lock to have to pick. i am sure that you pretty much had an idea of what i was going to say. anyways, stay safe, stay well and stay sane!!!

    Thanks for the explanation. Would an under set pin not feel the same as on over set pin? Are you not concerned about persisting with a pin and over setting it?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker
      @HelpfulLockPicker  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They feel different. It is possible to overset while working on an underset pin but you won't get the lock open if you don't try

    • @svish5790
      @svish5790 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HelpfulLockPicker I guess what my question is as a newbie struggling. With an under set serrated pin that has been pushed up some what but not enough, will it feel loose and slack like a set pin?

    • @HelpfulLockPicker

      The set pin will feel dropped down (if you think about it the feeling is the opposite). An underset pin will still be pushing against resistance and you will feel it

      HelpfulLockPicker I’m a big fan btw. I am a apprentice locksmith. Was trying to open a lock yesterday. Restricted key and can’t use under the door tool for this apartment door. The keyway was bad that I can’t pick it. It’s a oval cylinder 570 mortise lock for apartment. I know locksmith that take out the cap and drill a hole to bypass the lock. Is there a way that I don’t need to do that ?
